April 2, 2007 Washington D.C. - U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced today that they are introducing legislation that will effectively end the current military mission in Iraq and begin the redeployment of U.S. forces.
The bill requires the President to begin safely redeploying U.S. troops from Iraq 120 days from enactment, as required by the emergency supplemental spending bill the Senate passed last week. The bill ends funding for the war, with three narrow exceptions, effective March 31, 2008.
I am pleased to cosponsor Senator Feingolds important legislation, Reid said.
I believe it is consistent with the language included in the supplemental appropriations bill passed by a bipartisan majority of the Senate.
If the President vetoes the supplemental appropriations bill and continues to resist changing course in Iraq, I will work to ensure this legislation receives a vote in the Senate in the next work period.
I am delighted to be working with the Majority Leader to bring our involvement in the Iraq war to an end, Feingold said.
Congress has a responsibility to end a war that is opposed by the American people and is undermining our national security. By ending funding for the Presidents failed Iraq policy, our bill requires the President to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq.
The language of the legislation reads:
(a) Transition of Mission - The President shall promptly transition the mission of United States forces in Iraq to the limited purposes set forth in subsection (d).
(b) Commencement of Safe, Phased Redeployment from Iraq - The President shall commence the safe, phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq that are not essential to the purposes set forth in subsection (d). Such redeployment shall begin not later than 120 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.
(c) Prohibition on Use of Funds - No funds appropriated or otherwise made available under any provision of law may be obligated or expended to continue the deployment in Iraq of members of the United States Armed Forces after March 31, 2008.
(d) Exception for Limited Purposes - The prohibition under subsection (c) shall not apply to the obligation or expenditure of funds for the limited purposes as follows:
(1) To conduct targeted operations, limited in duration and scope, against members of al Qaeda and other international terrorist organizations.
(2) To provide security for United States infrastructure and personnel.
(3) To train and equip Iraqi security services.
Senate Democrats are pressing for an IMMEDIDATE SURRENDER and cutoff of funds now.
They want the war ENDED before the 2008 election, no matter HOW MANY WILL DIE because of it.
Again, I am forced to ask: WILL NONE DARE CALL IT TREASON??
What say you Hagel and Nelson?
OK Russ. Then Iran takes over Iraq, and has control over all the resources there, say that takes approximately twenty one days. The new country of Peraq is formed.
Just where the hail does that leave Israel and Saudi Arabia?
You given any real thought to that, Russ? With all your brilliant ideas?
We have just spent how much to get out? And how much will we be spending to go immediatley BACK IN to clean up an even HUGER mess??? Huh? Friend?
Those traitors are giving orders to the President to do what they want thinking that they are the Commander in Chief. The President is going to veto every treasonous and defeatist bill and he will get his funding for the troops without any condition.
"Just where the hail does that leave Israel and Saudi Arabia?"
They could care less....
This about the NEXT election, not anything beyond that, and the Vietnamese didn't follow us home after we abandoned them (Even though the Dominoes DID fall, and MILLIONS died), why would Radical Muslims???
Memo to any Republican:
Please grow a spine and say the following (or equivalent) during debate...
By directly attacking the US Constituion, Sen.s Reid and Feingold are willfully dividing the Republic.
The actions contemplated in this Senate resolution are divisive to the country. This bill does not have the best interests of the United States in mind.
As a citizen of the great state of Wisconsin, I wish to apologize to the nation for BUTT-BOY RUSTY. This frickin clown gives @ssholes a bad name.
That's not enough; see my post #6.
Someone needs to lay a BIG smack-down on these mopes.
Elections have consequences. Thank you to anyone that did not vote GOP to punish them. I recall reading here on FR by some posters how having the donks, the party of jackasses, in control of Congress would be good to shakeup the GOP. I ask how can this be good for anything? All this accomplished is putting your families, friends and yourselves in more danger of terrorism than before. Some of us knew this would happen and we tried to warn you.
Thank you!

Don't count on it...
Libs are trumpeting this particular piece from Chris Matthews
:This morning on the Chris Matthews Show, NBC News Andrea Mitchell revealed that Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, met very recently with the Senate Republican caucus to discuss their strategy on Iraq legislation.
Petraeus went to the Republican caucus and told them, I will have real progress to you by August, Mitchell said. The Republicans claim they told him that after August, they will end their support for the war.
They have told him at a caucus meeting as very, very recently, that if there isnt progress by August and real progress means not a day of violence and a day of sanity that they will pull the plug.
Unless we get somebody that can UNITE the Right, and SOON (Are you LISTENING, FRED?) this may all go down the drain, very soon...
100% correct!~
This proposed bill is a sideways move so that the Dems are not in a position of withholding money from the military.
They are separating funding from cut and run.
Nope--Iran comes into Iraq, Saudi comes into Iraq (as they said they would if Iran came in), we stand back as the fireworks fly and [voila!] the Middle East is preoccupied with itself for years to come, taking their attentions away from us for a long time.
Get ready for a blizzard of cut and run bills. The blizzard will last until a 'rat sits in the White House. Too bad I can't speak my mind and say what the solution is. If I did, getting booted from FR would be the least of my worries.
