SYDNEY, March 31 -- The Sydney Opera House, dozens of skyscrapers and countless homes switched off their lights Saturday evening along with many other sites in Australia's largest city to register concern about global warming.
The arch of Sydney's other iconic structure, the Harbor Bridge, was also blacked out in the city of 4 million as part of the hour-long gesture, which organizers said they hoped would be adopted as an annual event around the world.
Mayor Clover Moore, whose officials shut down all nonessential lights on city-owned buildings, said Sydney was "asking people to think about what action they can take to fight global warming."
Restaurants throughout the city held candlelit dinners, and families gathered in public places to take part in a countdown to lights out, sending up a cheer as lights started blinking off at 7:30 p.m. (excerpt)

Heck congratulate me, why dontcha! I've been turning off my lights at night for the last 40 yrs. In fact, I should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Metaphors look different from different geography. While we have 12 hours of sunlight, as does nearly the whole planet this time of year, twilight at 64 north goes on a long time. In fact it doesn't get black dark at all anymore. It's not brilliant light, but it goes on and on and on.
In the Middle Ages, the Medeival or Dark Ages as it was called, from the 5th Century to the 16th Centuray, the Roman Catholic Church ushered control of vast populations of Men by manipulating the darkness of their ignorance and fear.
San Francisco did it back during the Gray Davis blackout crisis - it looks like the second picture most of the time, now. A shame, because it ruined one of the world's best night skylines.
Shutting off the lights, as an economy measure, would briefly make sense.
But there is a reason that humanity has turned to having more and more light in and around their habitations and workplaces since it has become relatively cheap and easy to install lighting. For one thing, it is safer when traveling about after dark, to have more guidance for your path, than a hand-carried light and night-sky illumination. Danger lurks in shadows, and light flushes it out. Also, night-time made bright tends to keep people more active, and while more active, more productive.
All this may be at the expense of the peace of one's soul, of course. Man is MEANT to sleep eight or so hours out of the twenty-four each day, and to deliberately operate at a continuous sleep deficit takes a toll physically and mentally.
So with the lights shut off, are the people of Sydney getting more sleep?

Why not dim the skyline for six months or even for a year? If global warming is such a threat, a year of no electicity seems a small price to pay, no?
No kidding. Humanity has reached a sad stage when we have to give out rewards for practicing common sense.
Do all those lights in the first picture stay on all night, or 24 hours straight through?

Someone needs to get that message to the Iraqis who leave their lights on all night just because they can (for free, courtesy of US taxpayers!) Even though it leaves no electricity to run the village's water pumps, the idea that a neighbor could leave his lights on all night and get something you don't get...well, you just gotta leave yours on to get your fair share!
