Fox news covered some of Sen. Webb's press conference yesterday in which he discussed the circumstances surrounding the arrest of one of his assistants for posession of a weapon and ammunition on the capital grounds. Being a former infantry soldier, I cut Sen. Webb a lot of slack because he has seen combat up close and was awarded the Navy Cross. However, he did seem a little...too intense at the interview and it appeared he was hanging a subordinate out to dry, which we military guys don't like even though it happens all the time.
So, what do you think fellow freepers?
I always chuckle when Mark Levin calls him "Senator Melonhead"...
Jeez, I'd hate to think that that is his real hair!
I'm not conceding any of those three. Warner may be senile NOW, but he fought vigorously for the troops on the Armed Services Committee for years. Robb was a useless playboy, but not malevolent to my knowledge (plus his office did get me Clinton impeachment tickets). I barely remember the name Trible.
I think Webb's got a lock on Worst Senator Ever.
Interesting take based on his first three months in the Senate. Warner organized a third-party run against Ollie North who was challenging Robb (who defeated Trible) and said, holding his fingers about a half-inch apart, "I'm about THIS worried about the conservatives." Warner as Chairman of the SASC put ALL USN officer promotions on hold because of Tailhook 91. Robb's record speaks for itself. Trible, a Republican, was widely derided at the time as the Stupidest Senator. Webb may prove himself to be the worst ever, but he's got some stiff competition.
Trible wasn't a bad Senator. He was just a junior senator in John Warner's shadow.
His wrong move was declining to stand for reelection because he was afraid of a challenge from Chuck Robb. Thus handing the seat over the Robb without a fight. Then Trible tried to out conservative himself to get the nomination for Governor in 1989. He failed.
Since then however, he's done quite a good job as President of Christopher Newport College.
And yet so true to life.... ;)
Agreed ref. CNU
That's how I see it. My guess is that the entire staff is probably having second thoughts about working for him. Wonder what morale looks like in there now?
No, you haven't had worse Senate-wise. Webb makes Chuck Robb look like Patrick Henry.
Webb seems to have said that the aide was not aware of the presence of the firearm. I don't think he needs to say anything more at this time.
Even a Senator has a fifth amendment right to remain silent. If Webb is called as a witness in a trial of the aide, Webb may need to insist on immunity before testifying to anything beyond what has already been admitted.
There doesn't seem to be any good reason for Webb to offer himself up as another Parker case, since Parker has already been decided in favor of an individual right to keep and bear arms.
What is really curious, however, is that the aide is being charged for possessing unregistered items and not for attempting to bring firearms into a government controlled facility. I think that we are missing some details as to what happened just after the gun was discovered. It's impossible to violate the Second Amendment in a place like DC without encountering some substantial jurisdictional puzzles.
Some say he was going to try to whack Cheney to set up the impeachment ==> President Pelosi play.
No way. Trafficant's dead animal was a work of art. Webb's is just a stupid 70s style.
On another forum this issue came up and I was asked why I called Webb a nutjob.....by a democrat of course, but one not in Virginia - in fact the forum has nothing to do with VA someone just started a thread about it.
For the life of me I could not give a definitive answer to the question other than personal opinion based upon his behavior since the primaries.
Yeah, you people are friggin id10ts.
Hmmmm, I kinda see your point!
I'm sure he was only planning on shooting republicans.
For the record, Brit's panel noted that he used buzzwords that shed no light on the situation. It was even Mort the lib that called him on it.
I like what Brit Hume said about Webb on his news hour yesterday. If Webb is the Democrats next great hope, does he stand a chance in hell being their nomination?
