Webb Denies He Gave Aide Gun That Led to Arrest

Tuesday , March 27, 2007

WASHINGTON — Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Tuesday he did not give aide Phillip Thompson the gun that led to his arrest in a Senate office building. Webb did not say whether it was his gun.

Thompson is awaiting arraignment in D.C. Superior Court after being arrested Monday for trying to enter the Russell Senate Office Building, where Webb's office is located, carrying a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines.

The judge will determine whether Thompson, 45, will have to pay bail to get out of jail, and will set a date for a preliminary hearing. Thompson spent the night in a D.C. jail after U.S. Capitol Police determined Monday that he did not have a permit to carry a gun in Washington, D.C., where only law enforcement officials are allowed to carry handguns.

He is charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. According to the court docket, Monday was Thompson's birthday.

A senior Democratic aide said Monday evening that Thompson forgot that he had the weapon when he sent the senator's bag through the X-ray machine at the office building. The aide said Webb gave the bag that contained the gun to Thompson when the aide drove the senator to the airport.

Webb said he has been in New Orleans since Friday and returned Monday night. He denied that he gave the weapon to Thompson.

Thank you, they must have changed it recently. About eight years ago they did not recognize my husband's Alabama concealed carry.

Found a link, Alabama (and numerous other states) were added in 2004.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I see little to no likelihood that Webb gave it to him and said he could take it in. Why would he? I'm sorry, I can't hang my hat on "they just think they are above the law" or the ridiculous notion that Webb sent him in there to kill "political enemies" as the one poster said - when the most logical explanation is that the aide picked up the wrong bag.

I would only add that on a previous thread it was brought up that senators are US Marshals under some law passed last year if memory serves. Web was legal for all intents and purposes but the aide is not protected.

Do you have a link to that story? If not, is that the complete story, or are we supposed to just wonder why a colleague was going through her handbag just for the hell of it? Nice bit of reporting.

Let everyone carry his own nuclear weapon?

Attaches to the end of a standard garden hose. The end of noisy neighbors.

"All this restrictions are unconstitutional in any case."

No argument, but that fact and a couple of bucks will get you a cup of disgusting burnt coffee at Starbucks.

Everyone knows that the only people who can carry guns in DC are Puerto Rican terrorists pardoned by Bill Clinton......

The webbism is commonly called YOYO
You On Your Own.
If he were a real democrat, he would add some specifics about the moments leading to the exchange of weapon from owner (Senator) and recipient (Aide) just to give it some semblence of reality....still wouldn't make MSM, maybe page 4

“Everyone here knows that I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, that I have had a permit to carry a weapon in Virginia for a long time, and I believe that it’s important — it’s important for me, personally, and for a lot of people in the situation that I’m in, to be able to defend myself and my family.”

His quote says it all. The 2nd Amendment doesnt apply to those who votes these a$$es into office.

The gun was a probably part of a Webb plan to veto-proof the thin Democrat majority.

Hooboy - even if it was (and I'd guess that it was) inadvertent Webb is really leaving the guy out there twisting in the wind. If I'm a congressional aide you can bet the first thing I do when I pick up one of the boss's bags from now on is to see that there isn't anything in it that'll land me in prison.

There once was a map on "open carry" and "concealed carry" and "no carry" on FR. In AZ you can conceal carry any time except in courthouses and things like that.

On one of Cyber's and my three-week drive trips we knew where we could conceal carry, open carry and no carry. We skipped the states with "no carry" and if it was "open carry," we would just take the magazines out of both .9 millimeters and put them in the back of the SUV with the shotguns which are legal everywhere. But me being me, I would carry at all times a small five-shot .22. Fits nicely in your purse, but burns the heck out of your right thumb if you have to shoot.

Oh, we never had to shoot. My thumb is fine.

This is pretty much all a lie, except the part about the .9 millimeter. We only carry one, and it's always loaded no matter where we are. The rest of the guns are kept in two locked gun safes.

We all KNOW what will happen if you let anybody who wants to walk into the heart of the Federal government with a hidden gun.

Yes, we do. We'll finally get a government that we can trust.......
