Fred Thompson Is No Ronald Reagan
The American Thinker ^ | March 26, 2007 | Steven M. Warshawsky

Posted on 03/26/2007 9:49:21 AM PDT by RepublicanPatriot

Yes, Thompson has portrayed strong executive leadership in his acting roles, but what reason do we have to believe that he will exhibit the same qualities in real life? Unlike Reagan, to whom he sometimes is compared, Thompson has never led a major labor organization, never served as governor, and never been considered one of the leaders of the conservative movement in this country.

It's rather confusing, the anti-Guiliani group here has gone from Hunter to Gingrich to Thompson...all in about one month! I will vote for the ultimate nominee, some with less enthusiasm that others. I didn't like the way F.D.Thompson wimped out on the investigation of the Clintons in the Senate. Or his alliance with McCain against G.W.Bush in 2000. And quite a few other things. But if he gets the nomination, he has my vote. It seems we all should take that approach. None of them are perfect, all have skeletons in their past...Thompson too. Don't kid yourselves about that, he will have plenty of negative coverage from his divorce, single years, Hollywood years, changes of opinion, approach to committees, backing of CFR, etc if he decides to run.

Not going to flame away at all. Though I do not necessarily agree with you regarding Rudy, I do understand your logic. My issue is with those that preach the 'It's Rudy or it's Hillary' line, and absolutely overlook Rudy's positions on the issues- more than just the WoT.

I don't believe Rudy is the only one who can beat Hillary. Of course, I also believe Obama will be the candidate. :)

I don't expect Fred Thompson to be another Ronald Reagan! I still want to be able to vote for him and hope he enters the race!

i also meant to thank you for the compliment : )

when it comes to supporting rudy, i can respect a conservative who supports him because he/she figures he is the only option, but i have a very hard time having my intelligence insulted by attempts to morph him into a conservative. he never was and isn't now. he is engaging in some rhetoric which is an attempt to assuage concerns over his liberal views and is for the sole purpose of political expediency re; 2d amdt and abortion.

Well there are some here who actually believe that! Haley Barbour comes to mind- who I think would be a wonderful candidate.

I think I get it, it's a fear and loathing and FEAR of Hillary Clinton. Some Freepers have convinced themsleves that the Guiliani is our only hope of beating the Hildebeast.

Although I share some of their fear they are misguided to believe that someone like Thompson who is demonstrably more conservative than Rudy won't kick the crap out of Hil.

Can we quit wishing for Ronald Reagan to be resurrected? There will only be one RR. Let's work on the world we have TODAY, and keep Reagan's spirit alive by making an America he would be proud of--instead of just wishing he were still around.

There will never be another Barry Goldwater, Jim Robinson, or Registered, or Recovering_Democrat, or RepublicanPatriot...or Tony Snow, or Brit Hume, or John Stossel, or Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter...pick whatever conservative you want to pick!

We need to move FORWARD--look back to remember our roots, yes, but move.

We really don't know enough about this man to jump on the bandwagon.

What, seven or nine years in the Senate doesn't provide a record?

The author of this piece asks, Is Fred Thompson presidential material? He is not convinced.

Nor am I....

Well, we know lots about Rudy and it will not pass the smell test. I could never vote for him.

It is weighted. Bills which would have a greater impact were weighted more heavily.

"Although I share some of their fear they are misguided to believe that someone like Thompson who is demonstrably more conservative than Rudy won't kick the crap out of Hil."

Thompson would unite an already fractured GOP. Rudy would, in my humble opinion, shatter the party, and could very well lose.

Well, I will not compromise my principles. Better to die a quick death than a agonizing, long drawn out one, referring to the USA. Although we've been uttering the death rattle for several decades now.

Many of us will not vote for another open borders RINO.
And suing gun manufacturers for making too many guns??
That is truly sick, and proves Rudy has no common sense!
Might as well sue Wal-Mart for making too much money too! : )

It's not confusing at all. We support conservatives entering the race, not RINO pro-abort and anti-gun liberals.

I admire your principal but considering the stakes don't you think that attitude is a bit Don Qixotesque?
