Fred Thompson Is No Ronald Reagan
The American Thinker ^ | March 26, 2007 | Steven M. Warshawsky

Posted on 03/26/2007 9:49:21 AM PDT by RepublicanPatriot

Yes, Thompson has portrayed strong executive leadership in his acting roles, but what reason do we have to believe that he will exhibit the same qualities in real life? Unlike Reagan, to whom he sometimes is compared, Thompson has never led a major labor organization, never served as governor, and never been considered one of the leaders of the conservative movement in this country.

Having read both of your posts over the years, I have always looked forward to what you had to say. You both generally come across as intelligent, informed conservatives. So please don't degenerate into a us vs. them mentality.

I, right now, am waiting to see if Fred Thompson actually declares his candidacy. If, in fact, he does run, I am almost on his band wagon. As of right now, though, I am a "RudyBot". My # 1 priority in 2008 is to win, and I think Rudy can do it. I also am looking for a leader. In that case, I think both men display leadership personas. In 2000, there is no way in the world I would have even looked at a Rudy candidate, but like others, September 11th changed me. I will not apologize for that, so I just ask that we try and keep it civil, because there are Rudy supporters that are keeping their choices open, and I am afraid that some of these comments will turn them away.

Much respect, feel free to flame away :}

The MSM is praying for Rudy to prevail, as they know they can destroy him. And they won't even have to lie to do it : )

I like Duncan Hunter. But there's nothing about being a Representative that positions someone to be the next President. At least Tancredo has made a name for himself. George Steinbrenner doesn't interview Little League coaches to be the next Yankees manager, and mere Representatives don't become President.

'even FReepers appreciate his work ethic'

Give me a break, with that thinking you will be voting for Hillary. She has been running since 1972!

I want ideas and a vision for our future. Your thinking is like 'old Joe sure puts in the hours at work but doesn't accomplish s!it.'But he deserves a raise because of the hours he puts in.

Rudy could be the destruction of this party if elected. We can't wink at one another and say 'just this once'. That once will end up being forever.

Giuliani idolizers always say we can't disqualify a candidate who doesn't agree with the GOP on most issues, because we can't have a "purity test," etc. Then they say Fred Thompson isn't perfect, and isn't pure enough. Interesting.

Even Ronald Reagan was no Ronald Reagan. The plastic sainty mythologized man is nowhere near the truth of who the real man was.

Rudy is twice as conservative as any Democrat in the field.

John Edwards has expressed some real discomfort at the idea of gay marriage. Says he's "not there yet." Whereas Rudy...

Giuliani is for gun control, abortion on demand, and absolutely anything on gay demand. He thinks Ruth Ginsburg was a fine choice for SCOTUS.

Is he twice as conservative as any Dem? What is twice zero again?

"So, Fred's third to two VERY conservative but hopelessly unelectable guys...IOW the most fiscally conservative guy who can win!"

Yep. I'll take 88% of the loaf in politics any day.

no flames from me. there has been an extraordinary amount of arrogance on the part of quite a few rudy fans, virtually handing him the nomination before a single vote has been cast. that turned off more than a few freepers, like myself, who bear no illwill against rudy, but just consider him an extremely flawed candidate, and not someone that we need to settle for at this juncture. With the rumors of Fred's potential entry into the race, there has been hope kindled for a more conservative, less baggage-laden candidate. There have been many attempts by rudyfans to disparage a THompson candidacy, sewing seeds of doubt eg; maybe he's in cahoots with McNut, what's he waiting for, there won't be time or money for him with this primary schedule, he voted for CFR he must be bad [no mention that rudy voted for it too]. So, like it or not, there is an us vs. them mentality. i don't flame individual posters, but if someone takes umbrage at my characterization of the rudybots fears of a Thompson candidacy, i am afraid that is too bad. the primary selling points for rudy have been:he's the only one that can beat hillary, and he's the only one who is electable. if that is no longer the case, in the event of a Thompson candidacy, then rudy's #s are bound to go down. that prospect frightens the hardcore rudyfans.

You've been making a lot of good points against those Rudy hangers-on (who won't despite our most fervent prayers, go away). I thought that your post 45 was exceptionally excellent and on point.

If the heavens do not align and Mr. Giuliani is elected, I suppose that we rubes out here will just have to suck it up and be appreciative that an man of such distinguished urban background will lead this nation. Maybe Miss Didi will even write a column on FR on the special features of her most wonderful city.

funny thing though, the rudyfans think that the MSM fears rudy and is pushing Thompson as the easier candidate to beat. i don't get that, since rudy is the one with the steamertrunk full o baggage.

They are. Many of us, including the founder of FR are besise ourselves wondering how any conservative could vote for Rudy.

Flaming accomplishes nothing. Many Rudy supporters here have said some vicious things. I appreciate your civility on this matter.

Perhaps the fact that Fred Thompson has done something in his life besides live off the government tit. (Pardon the expression) but the rest of these clowns have never had a real job other than spending the taxpayers' money.

>There's nothing about being a Representative that positions someone to be the next President.<

But 14 terms in that position, with responsible and effective chairmanships beats 2 terms in the Senate with no redeeming accomplishments, (and a part in a tv series)in my book.

>At least Tancredo has made a name for himself.<

If Duncan Hunter does not win nomination and Tancredo does, I will gladly vote for Tancredo. They may even make a good ticket.
