Mona Charen: Why Fred Thompson Should Run
Townhall.com ^ | March 23, 2007 | Mona Charen

Posted on 03/23/2007 2:33:56 AM PDT by Josh Painter

The current Republican field is like a smorgasbord at Denny's -- lots of OK choices, but nothing to get the heart racing. That's why the potential candidacy of former Sen. Fred Thompson is creating a palpable stir.

Rudy Giuliani ... really is quite liberal on cultural questions that matter deeply to conservatives -- life, gun control, and gay rights. Even if conservatives could live with such heterodoxy, say, by accepting the reassurance that Giuliani would appoint conservative judges, there is still the matter of his psychedelic personal life. To be divorced once is now, sadly, common. To be divorced twice and alienated from one's children may be over the line.

John McCain is a solid opponent of Washington spending, a patriot who suffered for his country and his principles (he declined early release from North Vietnam), and a tough, perspicacious leader. But he championed a baldly unconstitutional abridgement of free speech, he showboated on the torture question, and he is getting to be a little old for the job. He has never had a solid connection with conservatives -- particularly with religious conservatives -- and the excitement he generated in 2000 has drained away (as it always does).

Mitt Romney is a fine man with obvious talents. But his recent conversions to conservative positions on abortion and gun control have more than a whiff of opportunism about them. Dig a little deeper and discover, as Ruth Marcus reported in The Washington Post, that he voted for Paul Tsongas in the 1992 presidential primary. Uh-oh. If he trims now to please conservative primary voters, how will he morph next?

The other candidates in the race are barely registering in the polls, and one of those waiting in the wings is carrying enough baggage to sink a cruise ship...

For whatever it's worth, Fred Thompson is the only name mentioned, so far, that I give a rip enough about to actually support.

While I have not yet created a thread devoted exclusively to this subject, if you go to the "last" here and work back:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/833678/posts?page=6653#6653

...each updated reply is led with links, news, and graphics about Fred Thompson.

This graphic sums it up, for me:

I don't wish to alter the course of this thread, simply want to know if someone can enlighten me as to how Conservatives became "Red". I'd always known Conservatives to be as reflected by the map "Backhoe" posted.

"Blue" makes more sense to me.

Still not committed, but as posted before Fred Thompson has our respect, more so than any other in the field actively running for POTUS today.

Unfortunately, Fred voted for McCain/Feingold and his voting record on illegal immigration is not impressive.

Starting with the 2000 elections did the media color switcheroo occur. I personally refuse to use the Orwellian newsspeak colors and lament that fellow Republicans went along with being redefined by the color of international leftism without so much as a protest (gee, if they decided to change our party mascot to two cowboys fellating each other, we'd say, "Thank you, sir, may I have another ?").

Blue states will always be Republican, red will be rodent. As I told someone else, how can we take control of the agenda when we can't even stand up to the media with this absurd color scheme ? Take back the blue !

Liberals make the graphics and run the newsrooms, they wanted to shed the 'red' commie lable. Simple as that.

SOMEONE has to save the GOP from itself. I used up my first set of vomit bags when McCain announced. Then some more when Rudy pretended to embrace the second Amendement. I used a ton of those bags up when the vile predator Gingrich "repented". I have none left. This is perhaps the worst crowd of GOP candidates I have ever seen. Frankly, it has been a constant nose-gripping chore to vote for every GOP nominee since Reagan departed the stage. Is Thompson "The One"? I don't know, but he is head and shoulders above these clowns.

I like truth. Real heros stand up for truth and where they see it missing they point out for the rest of us where it is.

John McCain is a solid opponent of Washington spending, a patriot who suffered for his country and his principles (he declined early release from North Vietnam),...

Why has John McCain allowed these kinds of statements to grow into a false legend?

Yes, he was given a choice of early release in return for a confession of war crimes. And yes, he refused.

But he was ordered to refuse. He was ordered by his Commanding Officer who was also a prisoner, Admiral Stockdale, telling all prisoners that no one would get out early by signing false confessions.

John McCain, you suffered for us it is true. And you could have come home early and explained that the confession that released you was forced and not true, but had you done so you would have disobeyed an order of your superior.

John McCain, you need to tell the whole truth. Telling the truth in these times will make you a hero.

I thought it had to do with the incumbent party, but that might have changed now (liberals and cockroaches cannot stand the light being shined on them)

Barry was the first politician I supported publicly.

My area was about 80% New Deal Democrat at the time, too.

It certainly made for interesting times.

I was only 12 in 1964, but I remember that Presidential campaign well -- I think it really marked my political awakening, especially with the vicious things the Democrats hurled at Goldwater. It startled me and made me start to read the newspaper and pay attention to public affairs.

I guess my point in the above was to be careful what you wish for: the American electorate is still not as conservative as we might hope they are. One of the reasons for the 1984 blow-out was that a) Reagan was extremely likeable; and b) Mondale was extremely dull. Personality plays a much bigger role in American politics than ideology. It always has.

Understood.

However, having a Goldwater sticker on my Kharman Ghia was certainly exciting, if nothing else...

Fred is likable.

However, I've never forgiven him for supporting McCain for President.

That shows a strange streak.
