I've been a member for awhile but this is the first time I've ever started a thread. This is a vanity, so one of the mods can move it if I've put it in the wrong classification.
My son is a student a Cheat Lake Middle School in Morgantown, West Virginia. For the last several weeks, he has come home saying that his teacher frequently takes time out of class to discuss his personal views on global warming. Today, he said they took two hours out of class to watch Al Gore's pseudoscience documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". I was absolutely stunned.
I have heard of several controversies where they've shown in in public high schools, but I cannot believe that they would show this to 5th graders. There wasn't even a word of advance notice to parents.
I've tried to contact the school's Principal and the the local newspaper. I'm at a loss as to how proceed from here to draw some attention and outrage, and would welcome advice from fellow freepers.
Ha ha ha. My daughter's geography teacher declined to show it (even though teachers in districts beside ours do). She said it was too "political" and there were a few "errors". Even so, she's a global warming believer.
My daughter has been printing off the "deniers" articles from the National Post, as well as other scientific "skeptic" articles and anonymously leaving them on the teacher's desk. After about 5 of these, the teacher went back to geography, and hasn't been talking about global warming. But if she ever does, my daughter will be anonymous no more, and she'll come out fighting ... she's not usually a quiet one. This has been fun for her so far.
What's the difference, showing that film or teaching evolution? They have been lying to our kids for years.
I was going to post the same thing. I have 2 sons in HS, although their teachers are very conservative, they have come home once in a while and told me about some stupid comment. We talk about the other point of view. Sure you can insulate your child but eventually they go out in the world. Instead you can give them the knowledge and tools to stand up the the stupidity. Everyone talks about indoctination, I suppose if you just sit back and let the school do it all that will happen. If you take an active interest and talk to your kids and let them know that no matter what you are the boss, they understand.
What you said was true. You have to talk to them and find out what they're being taught, then present "truth" in place of false info.
We homeschooled, but did the dual credit route once our son was in the 10th grade. So although he never went to high school, he went full time to community college starting when he was 15.
I do think that most of his profs at the CC were pretty fair and balanced. Even if they were "liberal"...they encouraged student debate. His Government prof was ex-military and a hard core Republican...so he riled up the liberal students.
But still we talked about what he was learning and actually we were glad he was home during those first "college courses" because we could "deprogram" any of the false info he was getting.
You may have already done this, but the first thing I would do would be to make sure my son knows where the flaws and assumptions of that film are and give him liberty to bring that up in class.
My boys go to public school and I have been fine with it. I will tell you most of the teachers live right here in the community and send their children there as well. We have a small community that is very conservative, alot of parental involvement in the schools etc., so our schools reflect our values. My boys tell me stories about their teachers that I think are hysterical, a liberal would have a stroke. One of my son's teachers recently used an example in vocabulary and said "you would never use liberal and intelligent in the same sentance." The kids thought it was funny.

Schools are nothing more than places for indocrination in the leftist dogma.
I agree with several here - don't underestimate your influence as a parent. We live in ultra-liberal Oregon and my high-school son has had many-a-day since elementary school where he had to listen to senseless dribble from his teachers. We've always discussed these things at home and, most of all, taught him critical thinking. Teachers come and go, but you'll always be their parent - they actually DO listen to you, even as a teen (contrary to popular belief).
Oh, and definitely show him the "Great Global Warming Swindle"!! My son and I watched it a while ago - he loved it and has used some of the information there to refute and educate his brainwashed friends.

I think one thing we can learn from the opposition is they are determined. We know in warfare, the enemy sets the rules. So, you need to be as determined and persistent in this as they are. The opposition is determined and persistent. Keep calling and keep showing up. I know this will require time and trouble on your part. But this is where the rubber meets the road for all of us. We would all rather just go to the beach or eat a good meal and just watch TV. But,, we can't. If we are going to change this insanity, it is time we start putting in some real hours in this crusade. There are liberal nutcases with the brain the size of a peanut trying to steal our children. How much time are our children worth?? Expose to the community what they have done. Demand they show the UK film " The Great Global Warming Swindle." Find how they can get access to the film. There will be others in your community that will help you. There are always others, but don't expect them all to applaud you. Assume the community and your friends will think you are the crazy one and then maybe it will be all up from there. Most of these libs are really just cowards. Honestly,, these libs have gotten where they are not because they are so full of courage or better fighters,, I really believe they have been able to advance so much just because we have let them. Persistence and determination will help us all a great deal.

I appluad this person for staying on the front lines of the battle and not running in retreat like you suggest.
Captain- just make some noise. Any noise. Leave messages for the principle and teacher. See if you can find any other parents who agree with you.
Basically- just call them on it. Make it known that there are some parents who are more concerned with truth than with strange propaganda.
Pull your kid out. They get money for having him there. Hit them in the pocketbooks AND save your kid. God only knows what other garbage he is ingesting. Talk to other parents; have them boycott the school. This is done to YOUR child with the taxpayers' money. The School Board is elected.
