I listened to her doctor comment to reporters after the Edwards' finished speaking. The doctor said Mrs. Edwards now has Stage IV breast cancer. That only has a five-year survival rate of 20%. This rings close to home for me. Very sad. Mrs. Edwards is putting on a brave face, it seems. Best of luck to her.

Odd to want to spend the remaining few years of your wife's life on the grueling campaign trail.

Wow. John Edwards is an idiot. His wife has a limited amount of time left, and he wants to blow a significant portion of it campaigning away from her (because she won't be able to travel while getting treatment).

Really, sincerely sorry for her illness. Prayers for the long-shot recovery.

I really think its none of our business how they chose to spend this time. Some people believe that continuing with their lives is the best way to keep their minds focused on getting better.
To: mngran
I believe I'd want to spend as much time with my loved one as God would give me.
This is looking like a self-serving situation to me, and i am disappointed in the man.

With the amount of travel, lack of sleep, constant interviewing and appearances etc., her chances are going to diminish rapidly. Sorry to sound callous, but it's like they're hoping for the Pity vote. Prayers for her.

The campaign goes on, the campaign goes on strongly, he said, with his wife, Elizabeth, at his side. The Breck girls campaign can hardly be considered strong. Hillary and Obama get all the press. Edwards needs a tragic illness in his family to get anyone to notice him. Kind of a cynical way to get attention.

Dunno. With his money, and Fred Baron's private plane, she may well be able to maintain a treatment regiment on the road.

Newt Gingrich, I believe, got a lot of grief for divorcing his wife while she had cancer.
I believe that Edwards should get just as much grief for campaigning while his wife is suffering Stage IV cancer. Selfish bast*rd.

He's young enough to run again in 2012 or 2016. Why would he keep on going now?

With rhemo? No way. She won't want to go anywhere, let alone on the campaign trail.
If she does try, it'll take her chances of recovery from about 20% straight down to 0%.

After telling of his wife's diagnosis, I thought he would announce that they were going to drop out of the Pres race and spend time together. It sounds as if they are not wanting to look at it as a death sentence, which is good, but I hope they don't miss out on some precious time together as a family.
He said that they had talked together extensively as to what to do now, so I guess they are fine with their decision. Don't know that it would have been mine.
God love her, I hope she does well for a long time to come.

When I first saw the headline on Drudge "Elizabeth's cancer is back" my first reaction was of sympathy for her - and for her husband who I assumed would now drop out of the '08 race to concentrate on his wife's health and stay close to home.
The news that he intends to continue his campaign is nauseating. What a jerk. No doubt playing the sympathy card now.
Good luck to Mrs Edwards. I hope she beats the odds.

I pray for Elizabeth. This will be hard on her and she'll need all the help she can get!
