(AP) "The pet food linked to the deaths of 16 animals has shown no signs of contamination, the manufacturer says, and the company cannot explain why some of the cats and dog that ate it developed acute kidney failure and died."

It was just that the company claims they can't find a source and that led me to believe it was a deliberate act by somebody with a hatred for the company.

I heard today that it's over 400 nationwide now.

And, that's only from people who read or listen to news.

I wonder how many of those are directly related to the pet food, and how many were ordinary sick animals. Kidney failure isn’t exactly unknown among animals. It’s possible that as the word spreads even more deaths will be blamed on the food - not because of the food but because people want something more substantial to blame a pet’s death on other than “natural illness”, and any case of kidney failure will be laid on the food.

If you can find a rabbitry in your area they will often let you have the culls for $.50 to $1.00/pound and the whole rabbit is edible by dogs. Rabbit has a much higher protein concentration than any other meats, and dogs just naturally love it. Check 4H, FFA and farm bureaus in your area, they often have info on rabbit breeders.

Well, I was one of the people who rushed to my vet to get one of my ragdoll cats checked out.

She has been barfing...not everyday...and her stool is sometimes like pudding....all signs of an infection, etc..

The Sophisticat Supreme pouches..of which I used only the gravy part.... ARE on the list...but none of the lot #s matched..so I thought I was safe.

My vet told me that with kidney failure a cat could appear fine one day and gone 48 hours later.

It's not the utensils that make the difference it's the ingredients and methods. Most beer companies use the same vats for all their varieties (exception being "old style" beers that are partially marketed on their different equipment), but the beers are different because the ingredients are different and often times the overall prep methods vary.

I've never seen a canned food that I would feed my pet. The meat in these foods is called 3-D and it is mostly moisture. Dead, diseased or dying. I have seen it made and been to their rendering plants. Its nauseating. Dry food for my animals.

I agree, but I wouldn't even feed my dog dried food, the "Meat" they use in all pet foods is of such poor quaility it can't even be used legally to make hot dogs, it's that bad. The food I feed my fish is better, it's table scraps only for my dog.

A wicked heart. It's one thing for a disgruntled employee to mess up computer systems. It's a whole other thing to do something that would kill an untold number of beloved family pets. Takes a special kind of evilness. (Not that it doesn't exist in this world.)

I think for awhile it would be best to keep your pet off any pet food with gravy. Regardless of what they find as the root don't take your animals diet for granted. I learned my lesson when I nearly lost our Shiba Inu last year from Pancreatitis when I gave him some Ham from my plate. Nearly killed him with kindness.

I haven't seen any figures anywhere showing how many pets die of kidney failure in any given month. I would suspect that that it is a sizable number, considering how many pets there are in this country. Is this figure of 16 really that far off from the expected number of kidney failure deaths?

Astute folks like you and I have known for years about that gas delivery truck, but finally, the truth is becoming known for pet food companies. I've long felt that they were just milking the public with their claims of being "better", and "if you love your pet, then spend the extra money on him."

I've know this for years. My brother used to work at a huge orange juice processing plant. Their orange juice went to Minutemaid, Tropicana and various cheap store brands.

It was all the same juice.

Go ahead and pay more for a "premium" brand - but much of the time you are getting exactly the same product that is in the "cheap" brand carton.

Years ago, the same thing was true for VCRs. There was a huge factory in Asia churning them out and they went to different companies who would slap their own name plate on the machines. They were all the same product, yet people really thought they were getting a "better" machine by paying more for a prestigious name.

They weren't.
