Homeland Security: As Democrats hold more silly hearings to embarrass Republicans, the FBI is warning local police to be alert for Muslim extremists hijacking school buses. Reality check, please.
We wonder if any of the grandstanding politicians on Capitol Hill are thinking in terms of one of these nuts driving a fertilizer-filled yellow bus up to a government building — or, easier yet, a school. Of course not. They're too busy swooning over Valerie Plame to even notice we're still under threat from the Islamic terrorists they say we shouldn't be spying on.
The FBI and Homeland Security Department last week sent out a bulletin to law enforcement across the country warning that Muslims with "ties to extremist groups" are signing up to be school bus drivers. They also noted "recent suspicious activity" by foreigners who drive school buses or are licensed to drive them.
Recent events come on top of several other school bus-related incidents involving Mideast men that raise suspicion of terror activity.
They include last year's surprise boarding of a school bus in Florida by two Saudi men dressed in trench coats. Authorities suspect they were making a dry run to see how easy it would be to hijack or blow up a school bus filled with American children.
Previously, an Arab man from Detroit was caught trying to obtain a job as a school bus driver in New York using fake Social Security documents.
Authorities fear the school massacre that took place in Beslan, Russia, in 2004 may be a dress rehearsal for what al-Qaida plans to do here. Chechen terrorists tied to al-Qaida seized a building in Beslan on the first day of school and slaughtered 338, including 172 kids.
Three years later, schools and local police in this country are still unprepared to deal with such an assault. Most don't have response plans for handling a single active shooter, let alone a cell of trained terrorists.
Yet terror cells secreted inside America may be planning to use buses as a Trojan horse to infiltrate school campuses and murder students and teachers. Floor plans for schools in Virginia, Texas and New Jersey have been recovered from terrorist hands in Iraq. Videotapes confiscated in Afghanistan show al-Qaida terrorists practicing the takeover of a school.
Simultaneous attacks on schools in multiple states would follow Osama bin Laden's goal of crippling the U.S. economy. If multiple schools were hit, parents would drop out of the work force en masse to protect their children.
A prolonged labor disruption would cost businesses billions of dollars in lost revenue.
It's a grim picture. But don't think for a moment that al-Qaida is above targeting school children. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said in his Gitmo confession that while he may not like killing kids, they're fair game in jihad. He claims U.S. forces bombed and killed the children of bin Laden's top deputy, Ayman Zawahiri, and arrested and "abused" his own children.
These people have nothing better to do than sit around and think of ways to kill us and our most precious resource, our children. They have many helpers placed inside U.S. cities who canvass targets and perform other logistics for such attacks. And these people will stop at nothing to pull them off. They're just waiting for the right time, when our guard is down.
Are we witnessing with Muslim men trying to obtain bus licenses what some alert (but ignored) agents witnessed before 9/11 when they noticed a number of Muslim men training to obtain pilot's licenses? Are schools and children the target of the next wave of terror attacks?
Parents should be outraged that Washington would continue to play politics with national security. Instead of using hearings to score partisan points, Congress would best serve constituents by using that power to investigate the terror threat to schools and how best to protect our children from attack.
Reality check, indeed. We're grown-ups, and there are 300 million of us; we can walk and chew gum at the same time. Generally speaking, "How can we waste time on [x] when [y] is so much more important???!? is a pretty lame argument, and this is an exceptionally lame example.
If we're counting on the Congressional leadership of either party to track and investigate terror threats, we're in deep, deep trouble from jump. The government can investigate threats, repair highways, collect taxes, inspect meat, and put robots on Mars, all at the same time. This is America, damn it. We're that big.

The AP had the school bus story, and CNN carried it, on March 16th. The MSM has been all over it. Google News reveals postings all over the place, 400-odd in the last week or so.
On Wikipedia, they also appear on the list of casualties. Also from Wikipedia:"Approximately 365 were killed during the crisis of those were 344 hostages. Out of 62 teachers, 22 were killed... 10 Russian special forces (Spetsnaz) and 2 medics were also killed during the crisis."The old list on http://www.beslan.ru/mainlist.html is a dead link.
This "unofficial list" on News.ru http://www.newsru.com/russia/17Sep2004/spisok.html hasn't been updated since 9/17/2004, and still lists all of them as "ne naiden" (not found) or "net dannyx" (no data).
That list contains 1345 names, and Alana Alanovna Loloyeva (age 10) is ABSENT. There is an Alana Umatovna Galayeva (age 13) listed as killed, but I don't think they are the same.
This site http://newizv.ru/fotoreport/?f_id=11 still lists Sabeyeva and Loloyeva as missing, but I don't know how old it is, or when last updated.
Difficult to keep dry eyes when reading those lists, even after all these years.

Unfortunately I do remember the threats made by bin laden to kill thousands of children. When did he say that? Maybe 3 years ago? As we all know they have a lot of patience to find the right time.
Of course the old farts in DC are spending most of their time these days probably worrying about what the madam has in her telephone records/notebook!
I also read somewhere that they have already written this off as not a valid threat?? Of course, that's their usual MO, so that doesn't surprise me.
The only time the whole bunch of them will 'maybe' decide to do something is after another attack. Let it be school children and the scum terrorists will have to deal with American citizens. They should be afraid of that, if not our government.

I meant for terrorism and killing. I see your point. Socialists target them in a different way and for killing primarily before they're born.
We had a doctor who married a Christian (non-muslim) woman and by his own admission to us was a nominal muslim. I think he was genuine.

Greater homeland security funding is needed more than ever as we also try to be mindful of other sectors that might also be targets of terror groups. In his 2005 State of the State address, Acting Governor Codey launched an unprecedented effort to make New Jersey’s students safer by introducing a statewide school security checklist, law-enforcement visits to schools and training of teachers and staff to prepare for possible terror attacks on schools. This initiative was prompted by concerns last fall when information about two New Jersey elementary schools, one in Monmouth County and one in Gloucester County, was found on a computer disk in Iraq. This was at the same time that terrorists seized a middle school in Russia and killed more than 300 children and other hostages. As a result, the New Jersey State Police are helping our schools pinpoint widespread security weaknesses that should be remedied. The need for this initiative, while not falling under the jurisdiction of this Committee, is yet one more demonstration of why New Jersey and all states need greater financial and regulatory support from the federal government to address all fronts in the fight to improve homeland security.

while my kids are in private (parochial) schools, I do not kid myself into thinking these schools are not as much a target as the public schools. The only thing in their favor is they are usually smaller, so not as much damage can be done by attacking them
OTOH, there are some ritzy high dollar private schools that might be a target just because of the families the kids that go there belong to.
