Yellowstone Supervolcano Making Strange Rumblings

Steam rises from hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, in a 2002 file photo.

Supervolcanoes can sleep for centuries or millennia before producing incredibly massive eruptions that can drop ash across an entire continent.

One of the largest supervolcanoes in the world lies beneath Yellowstone National Park, which spans parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

The caldera is rumbling and filling up again.

That is causing a bulge under the North end of the lake.

It is spilling water over the South side of the lake.

It hasn't done that for a long time, so I am sure it is getting closer to blowing. (Just my opinion, though.)

I was there last summer and saw the areas flooded on the south side of the lake, but I had know idea that that was because of bulging on the north side. When was the last time the water spilled over the south side of the lake? I had visited the park 3 times before and can't say that I remembered the flooding then (85, 86, 88). I am definitely going to try to make it out there again this year.

I live fairly close to Yellowstone, and can assure you that we are getting closer to an eruption. We are closer this year than we have been for many, many years in the past.

Excellent point. I read somewhere that an eruption is nearing at a rate of one day per day. Unbelievable!

Mount Saint Helens gave weeks of warnings before it blew, esp the harmonic tremors. Gov Dixie Lee Ray told everybody to get the hell out of there, some (50) dead fools didn't listen, they became TOAST instead(or plasma).

Yellowstone is giving us fair warning as well. What happens to YOU in 3.5 years of nuclear winter? All it takes is for a geyser-crack to connect with the magma-pluton 5 miles down and....

There will be another super volcano eruption. There will be one in Yellowstone. We may live to see it or not, but it never hurts to be prepared.

Or as prepared as you can be. When the big one hits in California, or when the giant tidal wave from the Azores hits New York, or when the supervolcano really erupts, the people in the immediate area are prob'ly screwed no matter what.

True, but what are you going to do about it, spend billions of tax dollars to figure out how to stop them.

Boy Scout Motto : Be Prepared. Between 1 in a 1000 to 1 in 10,000 people will survive nuclear winter, wheather it comes from a strategic nuclear exchange, ozone layer loss over the northern hemisphere(1/3 of grass/trees solar UVB burn up)or a supervolcano(the burning pit).

Call it a divine malthusian correction or just plain bad luck(**** happens)are you going to be tomorrow's dirt(999 out of a 1000)or the 1 in a 1000 survivor that walks on that dirt. 98% of all species that ever lived on the earth are today's dirt and the human race came within an inch of extinction 74,000 years ago with the toba(TUBA BLAST)supervolcano.

Hubris, arrogance, I'm the center of the universe...always gets recycled as DIRT...and the meek shall inherit the earth.
