For the moment, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani sits on double-digit leads over the rest of the Republican presidential-hopeful pack in several national polls.

Why?

"It appears to me that Rudy is going aggressively after the conservative vote," says Pennsylvania Republican and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. "He has not ceded that ground to anybody."

Santorum, known nationally for his social conservatism, says Giuliani does a good job of reminding people how he governed as a conservative on crime, welfare and taxes in New York City.

Santorum also believes Giuliani has scored points on social issues with his comments about judges and Supreme Court justices.

"Rudy understands that, on those issues, the courts are where conservatives have been losing the battle," he says. "If he is going to be appointing judges in the Scalia-Thomas (mold), then he is sending a very positive message to conservatives that he understands the importance of having the Constitution interpreted for what it says and not for what people want it to be."

Name a compelling "true" conservative candidate with wide appeal since 1988???

GW Bush gave us Allito, Roberts and great tax cuts. Wide appeal?? he had a 80 % approval rating before a lot of you turned on him.

Ronald Reagan...Great man, who did he put on the court,let me think... Sandra Day, she went on to be perhaps the worst Justice ever. Reagan was so happy with her that he insisted she take part in his funeral. What`s wrong with this picture?

GW Bush is every bit or better than Reagan and he hasn`t named any evil women to the high court.

Great Presidents have the ability to communicate and to inspire America. That is how Ronald Reagan transformed an America curled up in the fetal position after Jimmy Carter into to the future "Hyper-power" that America became and was up until two years or three years ago.

Bush has failed miserably as a communicator.

You are forgetting one major fact. The other Presidents you mentioned did not have todays media to deal with.

Anybody that believes that President Bush had anything to do with Katrina and or its wounded and dead,is not about to be communicated to in any way shape or form.

People turned on President Bush because of their bad character. Don't let anybody tell you that the American people are smart.

They are freaking out at Rudy's frontrunner status and it will only get worse as time goes on.

What is in store for these people once Rudy gets the GOP nomination - and when he wins the White House? I predict many of the anti-Rudy crowd will ultimately come to support him wholeheartedly (once they get to know him as he really is, rather than the ridiculous caricature they have bought into). But for those who are totally invested - the 10 or 20 here who spend day and night posting screaming anti-Rudy spam - their impotent hysteria may well create some mental health issues for them.

I have NOT TURNED ON GWB. I am a great fan of his, he is a great president, but he is clueless how to "get out in front of issues, frame the issues, etc." I am frustrated at him, but am still a fan of his.

Returning to true conservatism, on the other hand, and embracing the principles of free enterprise, fiscal responsibility, separation of powers and federalism (which includes conservative judges), and only using the military when its in America's interests would allow us to compete nationally again.

For someone to come on these threads and offer the truth about someone, in this case Rudy, it is NOT spam.

When it is the repeated posting of the exact same post/graphic/argument that has been posted on dozens of other threads, and when it does not address the points of the article, then yes, it ~is~ spam.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the time, they don't even bother reading the article.

Political mainstream...who defines it and what is it? Is it the way the majority of Americans think? Then I would argue that the media and the liberals are way out of the political mainstream. Most Americans love conservative American family and Christian values supported by FR.

Those that have the megaphones (liberal media and much of public "education") think they're defining the political mainstream. I think right now they're just louder than the rest of us.

I don't think George Washington, John Adams or Thomas Jefferson were worried about the "political Mainstream" when they went through all they did to found our country. They did what they believed in - that's what a statesmen (v. politician) does and I think that's what FR stands for.
