Why Rudy?
Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | March 10, 2007 | Salena Zito

Posted on 03/10/2007 5:42:54 AM PST by veronica

For the moment, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani sits on double-digit leads over the rest of the Republican presidential-hopeful pack in several national polls.

Why?

"It appears to me that Rudy is going aggressively after the conservative vote," says Pennsylvania Republican and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. "He has not ceded that ground to anybody."

Santorum, known nationally for his social conservatism, says Giuliani does a good job of reminding people how he governed as a conservative on crime, welfare and taxes in New York City.

Santorum also believes Giuliani has scored points on social issues with his comments about judges and Supreme Court justices.

"Rudy understands that, on those issues, the courts are where conservatives have been losing the battle," he says. "If he is going to be appointing judges in the Scalia-Thomas (mold), then he is sending a very positive message to conservatives that he understands the importance of having the Constitution interpreted for what it says and not for what people want it to be."

YOU mean like YOU? Posing as a conservative but speaking up for Hillary? HA HA!

You are utterly delusional.

"Kind of like the "Netroots" crowd in the Dem Party that went after Lieberman. :-)"

Most of Rudy's positions are in line with the nutroots crowds.

Amnesty for illegal alien invaders

Gun control

Unrestricted access to abortion, taxpayer funded

If you pulled your head out of the boob tube on occasion maybe you would know that this guy who "played a prosecutor on tv" just so happens to be a distinguished former Senator from TN.

What makes you think I'm ignorant of that? So what if the guy served six years as a Senator. What did he ever do as senator? and why did he bail to make room for Alexander who has done even less. I dont think Thompson has the fire in the belly to run for President. I doubt he will run.

I do believe there was another great president who at one time was an actor...or do you not know that either?

Yes, I knew that too you effete snob. But Reagan had served two terms as governor and had run for president once before he eventually ran across Carter. He was far from being an actor when he ran and he was not a virtual neophyte.

Thank you, Corin. I must say, however, that after being called a treasonous liberal because we like a Republicans the ragers don't like, troll sounds rather benign :-)

"It appears to me that Rudy is going aggressively after the conservative vote,"

A few examples of this would be great.

I have not noticed a huge effort to go after the conservative vote. In fact, it appears to me that Rudy intends on getting elected without making any major moves to attract conservatives ( I don't consider his comment about Supreme Court justices to be significant), placing conservatives solidly in the wilderness.

I am supporting Hunter, but will continue to listen to what other candidates have to say. I was disappointed in Giuliani's CPAC speech. However, Rudy will not be able to indefinitely deliver general comments on the obvious disagreements with a significant portion of the GOP created by his stands on abortion, gun control, and border security.

The more Conservative elements of the Pub party are, IMHO, much like a volcano waiting to erupt. This must also be apparent to pols now on the sidelines who are no doubt eyeing a once in a lifetime chance at the brass ring. Things are going to get very interesting.

"I think they're more closely aligned with the Administrations of President Keyes, don't you?"

Ah, yes...another one of their success stories. They're hoping to repeat it this time around apparently.

Rudy is one of the few Republicans who have actually done something. Mitt Romney is another, because he ran a business, and was a governor.

I don't see running a senator's or representative's campaign and office as sufficient evidence of executive ability.

The Roman republic something calle the Cursus Honorum, the path of honors, a tradition that one could not fill high order offices until one had held lower offices.

Sometimes I think those purists are really democrats because no real conservative I know of in real life thinks the way these people do. Thankfully :-)

Someone here posted an interview with Rudy from 2005, where he said Ruth Bader Ginzburg is an example of a good Supreme Court justice.

I wish I had bookmarked that interview.

Your post #75 shares my views wholeheartedly.

What is happening here will be played out until the next election.

I happen to have that quote:

GIULIANI: That is not the critical factor. And what's important to me is to have a very intelligent, very honest, very good lawyer on the court. And he fits that category, in the same way Justice Ginsburg fit that category.

I mean, she was — she maybe came at it from a very different political background, very qualified lawyer, very smart person. Lots of Republicans supported her. I expect, and listening to Senator Nelson, I expect that John Roberts will get support from a lot of Democrats.

Not exactly what you said, huh?

Is this the beginning of a possible Rudy/Santorum match up? That would be interesting. I like Romney/Newt better, but I'd vote for any and all of them (see tagline) to keep the leftists out!

Just wondering... has anyone ever announced their VP choice during the primary season? It doesn't seem likely, but I am curious. Some guys seem more suited to the VP post and less likely to ever win the top spot in a general election (i.e. Newt, Santorum, Cheney etc.). I believe for some the VP route is the only way to the Oval Office.
