Is FreeRepublic A Conservative Website Or A Republican Website? (Vanity)

Even though we are still almost two years out from the presidential election, it is clear that the candidates are campaigning in earnest. This has led to some acromonious discussions with accusations flying about posters' motives and dedication to the principles of conservatism. While these frank discussions could be healthy for pounding out the details in a primary, some here are indicating their unequivocal refusal to support some candidates if they are nominated after the primaries. Furthermore, valuable posters have discussed their disatisfaction with the website as a forum for discussing conservatism and some have threatened to leave.

Given these observations, I'd like to republish the posting of the website owner from a few years ago.

Statement by the founder of Free Republic:

In our continuing fight for freedom, for America and our constitution and against totalitarianism, socialism, tyranny, terrorism, etc., Free Republic stands firmly on the side of right, i.e., the conservative side. Believing that the best defense is a strong offense, we (myself and those whom I'm trying to attract to FR) support the strategy of taking the fight to the enemy as opposed to allowing the enemy the luxury of conducting their attacks on us at home on their terms and on their schedule.

Therefore, we wholeheartedly support the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive strikes on known terrorist states and organizations that are believed to present a clear threat to our freedom or national security. We support our military, our troops and our Commander-in-Chief and we oppose turning control of our government back over to the liberals and socialists who favor appeasement, weakness, and subserviency. We do not believe in surrendering to the terrorists as France, Germany, Russia and Spain have done and as Kerry, Kennedy, Clinton and the Democrats, et al, are proposing.

As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc. We also oppose the United Nations or any other world government body that may attempt to impose its will or rule over our sovereign nation and sovereign people. We believe in defending our borders, our constitution and our national sovereignty.

Free Republic is private property. It is not a government project, nor is it funded by government or taxpayer money. We are not a publicly owned entity nor are we an IRS tax-free non-profit organization. We pay all applicable taxes on our income. We are not connected to or funded by any political party, news agency, or any other entity. We sell no merchandise, product or service, and we offer no subscriptions or paid memberships. We accept no paid advertising or promotions. We are funded solely by donations (non tax deductible gifts) from our readers and participants.

We aggressively defend our God-given and first amendment guaranteed rights to free speech, free press, free religion, and freedom of association, as well as our constitutional right to control the use and content of our own personal private property. Despite the wailing of the liberal trolls and other doom & gloom naysayers, we feel no compelling need to allow them a platform to promote their repugnant and obnoxious propaganda from our forum. Free Republic is not a liberal debating society. We are conservative activists dedicated to defending our rights, defending our constitution, defending our republic and defending our traditional American way of life.

Our God-given liberty and freedoms are not negotiable.

May God bless and protect our men and women in uniform fighting for our freedom and may God continue to bless America.

Jim Robinson

...some here are indicating their unequivocal refusal to support some candidates if they are nominated after the primaries.

You do realize that's covered under the "Free" part, right? The freedom to support or oppose candidates for any office, based upon their record or viewpoints. The freedom to find an alternative candidate than whoever is chosen as the Rep. Nominee. You want a 100% homogenized FReeper site? Ain't gonna happen. And if people leave FR for political reasons or personal reasons or whatever, that's their call.

Well, thanks to all the pictures of Rudy in drag, Free Republic is now considered a tranny site.

What's wrong with that?

Just curious....are you angling to have Rudy supporters kicked off this site, or just shut up?

I'd be happy to hear them say that they either really believe as he does or that they really don't believe as he does. I'd be happy to see them discuss point by point the issues where people disagree with Mr. Giuliani. I'd be happy to see them discuss point by point why they really believe he can win when there are so many voters whom he doesn't represent. I'd be happy to hear them say something substantive rather than retreating into the claim that only he can beat Hillary and then insulting anyone who can't in good conscience vote for him.

We'll see how valuable that influence is when he needs to step out from the primaries.

If that does happen, FR would have squat doing that.

"At 85, after a life in politics spanning five decades (he retired from the Senate in 1987), Mr. Conservative has found himself an unlikely new career: as a gay rights activist. While that's not his sole pursuit – he returned to Capitol Hill yesterday to testify in favor of scenic overflights of the Grand Canyon – in recent years he's championed homosexuals serving in the military and has worked locally to stop businesses in Phoenix from hiring on the basis of sexual orientation. This month he signed on as honorary co-chairman of a drive to pass a federal law preventing job discrimination against homosexuals. The effort, dubbed Americans Against Discrimination, is being spearheaded by the Human Rights Campaign Fund, the influential gay lobbying organization. "

I've been around for a while, and while FR is a conservative web site, it also seems to me to seek the most wide open debate possible while recognizing that without some restrictions, the entire site would become a food fight. For the most part, Paleo-Conservatives, Neo-Conservatives, Social Conservatives, Fiscal Conservatives, Libertarians, Constitutionalists and even RINOs and CINOs can freely debate.

People espousing a distinctly liberal point of view are generally not here long. The same is true for KKK members, white supremacy groups, or racists, generally, although I've seen quite a few veiled and not so veiled racial comments.

It's definitely not a Republican web site, as the Buchanan brigades posted here frequently when Pat made his independent run for the presidency. More Republicans are comfortable here because whatever home conservatism has in the political process anymore is generally found in the Republican party. However, it is NOT a Republican site.

It used to be a de facto GOP website. Now, thankfully, many FReepers have seen the truth behind the so-called "two-party" system, and a slow but steady movement towards a strictly conservative FR has begun. Party diehards will resist, but after six years of rinology, even the diehards are beginning to realize the ugly truth.

"I'm registered R. But I'm not a broken glass republican. I vote the most conservative (of the choices)."

I go a little farther than that.

I vote the party, for example it would be very hard to convince me that a conservative democrat senator would be better than a rino republican senator for a particular election, because I know that parties need numbers to drive their agenda, and that usually trumps supporting a particular individual.

If I made a list of what is important, my list would probably look like most here. The problem is when.. we are asked to list the importance order of each one and circle the ones we can't "give" on. I have voted R every year since I was 18 (except for locally occ) and two things are for sure. I won't vote for Rudy and I won't stay home.

No. That's FoxNews.

"Is FreeRepublic A Conservative Website Or A Republican Website?"
Yes. I hope that clears up any confusion.
