Giuliani up 25 points over McCain: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani, virtually tied with John McCain (news, bio, voting record) in a January poll, held a 25-point lead over the Arizona senator in a Newsweek magazine survey released on Saturday.
Among registered Republicans, 59 percent said they backed the former New York City mayor and 34 percent said they favored McCain, who announced on Wednesday he would seek the presidency in 2008, Newsweek said.
"Most registered Republicans are not familiar with Giuliani's positions on key social issues," the magazine said, listing his support for abortion rights and gun control as examples.
"When asked about whether Giuliani's views on these same issues would be enough to prevent them from supporting him, few registered Republican voters said it would," it said.
Giuliani was in a statistical dead heat with McCain in a January 24-25 poll, with 48 percent compared to McCain's 44 percent, the magazine said.
Meanwhile, a Newsweek poll of registered Democrats showed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) chipping away at front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's lead in the past month.
Clinton enjoyed the support of 52 percent of registered Democrats in the latest poll to Obama's 38 percent. That compared with 55 percent for Clinton and 35 percent for the Illinois senator in late January, Newsweek said.
In a potential general election matchup, Giuliani was virtually tied with Clinton and former Democratic Sen. John Edwards and five points ahead of Obama in a poll of all registered voters.
Newsweek surveyed 1,202 adults on Wednesday and Thursday. The poll included 283 registered Republicans, 342 registered Democrats and 349 independents and had a margin of error of three percentage points.

Most people don't really care about his abortion or gay rights stands, but a comprehensive federal gun control program would not sit well, and I suspect he's not that stupid.
BTW, it would still be interesting to see the viewpoints of all the other candidates.

Ok, that's fine. But I still doubt a president Rudy will be faced with that decision anyway, as it will likely be signed in the current administration.
I suggest you do some reading up on what the BATF has been able to do just be internal rulings - gun parts banned from importation, guns banned by reclassification - etc - all without legislative input. These things have happened under the bush administration. Under one run by rudy, it would be much worse.

I can't argue that with you, since I've not read any of the data you say exists (BATF), and I have no doubt you're right. Should Rudy continue on to February as the leading candidate, which doesn't necessarily comport with the history of early leaders like him, I will take the time to look at all of the issues of importance to me.
This will include the extent of his desires to control handguns and other such weapons, though it is not high on my list. I want to know how he will continue to improve on the security of the Nation, his control and turnaround of the federal budget, his commitment to the war on terror, his policy on taxes and tax reform, his plans for immigration reform, energy independence, social security reform, and reduction or elimination of government programs that do not produce results and/or clearly do not belong at the federal level.
I want to know how he will work with Congress and the other side of the aisle to implement and carry out these initiatives. Finally, if he passes muster on these issues, for me, I want to know how electable he is, as I want a Republican president, given the alternatives that many here fail to see or to care about.
as far as immigration reform, he supports the mccain / kennedy backdoor amnesty approach, and he fought against the federal government to maintain NY city as a 'sanctuary city' for illegal laiens.
If the current administration signs it I'll be voting 3rd party anyway. I have no other way to get my message to the GOP, other than the leverage of my vote.
I like Newt but you've got to run before you can win.
I think every legitimate candidate out there believes in some type of guest worker/legalization program for a subset of the illegals already here. This is also supported by a majority of the American people and has been continually with almost every single poll for about a year and a half. So that's a given, especially with a Democrat Congress. What is more important to me with respect to Rudy's position will be how he will secure the US, including the ports and borders.
That's not true. Unless and until the Supreme Court holds that the second amendment applies to the states and not just the federal government, the state may outlaw gun ownership entirely if they wish.
I'm not advocating that. I'm telling you what the law is. If you don't like it, don't blame me.
When 19% of the vote went to Ross Perot, what exactly was that message? Does anybody remember? What do you think a handful of people voting in protest over the AWB would accomplish? It's a feel good thing, but that's it. But if that's your only issue of importance, then I can certainly understand. For most Americans, many other issues take precedence, especially in this global terror war we are in.
