I'm excited about the possibility of a Thompson run.

I'm not what I would call excited yet, but the more I read about him the better he looks. I checked his Senate voting record last night and it looks pretty darn good to me, better than McCain's and far, far better than what Giuliani's would be if he had been in the Senate for those votes.

If you're interested in his Senate vote record I posted a link in # 803 that will take you there.

At this very early point in the process I'm not committed to any candidate, but I definitely ruled out McCain long ago, and RINORudy was never even on my possibles list. I won't vote for Giuliani and would have to think it over very hard before voting for McCain. But Thompson is quite acceptable to me unless and until someone who is more conservative announces, and who would be a nominee who I believe could actually win over the Democrat in 08. Hunter is a very good man with an excellent voting record in the House, but I don't believe he has a ghost of a chance of winning a national election.

Allow me to ask a key question here. Who woiuld Fred Thompson be running against? And further, would I be choosing between a Clinton and a Thompson? I'm sure that you get the message here.

Agreed.... What do you get with Thompson though ??? Thompson called himself pro choice in 1994...see National Review 1994 in run against Jim Cooper.

He is for the exception of the life of the mother = Red Herring.. Dr I don`t feel well.

So he is against partial birth abortion...that`s a plus but it does not make him pro life

Mary Landreau says she is pro life and pro choice??? maybe that`s where the republican party is headed

Shows how little you know. Thompson ran the Committee on Governmental Affairs while he was a Senator, and he ran a successful law practice before he got involved in politics.

Thompson was also an assistant U.S. attorney 1969-1972; the minority counsel, Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities (“Watergate Committee”) 1973-1974; the special counsel to Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander 1980; the special counsel, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations 1980-1981; the special counsel, Senate Intelligence Committee 1982; and a member of the Tennessee Appellate Court Nominating Commission 1985-1987.

I say a Thompson Rally in KC on the 24th.
I have been figuring that he was biding his time. It was apparent at xmas that he was the elephant in the room in this contest.
Thompson/Watts is my mantra.

I really like JC too! Heard this morning that Alan Keyes is considering running again! Things are getting crazy. Know it is early and there is plenty of time for things to shake out.

LOL!!! Running a committee or a law practice is not like running a state......and he got snookered by all the Dems on that committee. I like him, but he seemed WEAK....maybe it's the voice...

My 2 cent story about Thompson; Met him and Sen Howell Heflin on the Senate subway. My young son was with me and had a wallet chain that Heflin asked him about, "how much money you got in that wallet?, son", where upon my son pulled the wallet out to show him. Thompson put his hand out and stopped him and said "Son, let this be a lesson to you, never open your wallet in front of a politican".

He's got an acceptable voting record, ACU rating and positive national reputation. I'm very interested in a possible Thompson run, and.. so far .. I think he could have what it takes to unify the party for what will be a very tough, rancorous and consequential election.

Just the positive energy that's been galvanized here and is now buzzing in the blogosphere at even the hint of his running is eyeopening and impressive .. are you already closing the door on him? Do you already have a candidate who's got the national juice to win?

What concerns me is the level of personal attacks, "gotcha" attitude and highly combative pitch at the beginning of the cycle .. we've got 2 more years and untold and unknown numbers of world and domestic events and candidate filtering to get through before that day in Nov. 08 and still be on our feet and sane.

Prayers for God's mercy and protection for America, us and our awesome troops.

Meaning no disrespect, but if we are to choose our nominee based on his ACU rating, and turn a blind eye to his extreme campaign finance reform advocacy, then why not go with McCain?

ACU lifetime rating:

And that's with McCain serving 23 years to Thompson's 8.

ACU ratings are over-rated, and do not tell the story.

I have always thought that Fred WAS a little weak on conservatism, but I could definitely hold my nose and vote for him. He is better than just about anyone else.

Oh, I understand. And frankly, as the ACU rating also reveals, as a man, politician and leader .. I don't hold McCain anywhere near the high level of gravitas, character and integrity in which I hold Thompson.

You didn't answer my question. Have you already chosen a candidate with the national juice to win?

Fred Thompson did not sell out our country like McCain did.
