:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

"Cartel gunmen reveal links to cops, reporters"

"Two gunmen who worked for the Gulf drug cartel revealed their links with police and reporters in a video taped by a rival group who, after their confession, killed them"

Wire services
El Universal
Viernes 30 de marzo de 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "VERACRUZ - Two gunmen who worked for the Gulf drug cartel revealed their links with police and reporters in a video taped by a rival group who, after their confession, killed them.
The video, aired Thursday by TV Azteca, shows Jesús Arano Servín and Víctor Pérez confessing their membership in Los Zetas, a group made up largely of Army veterans now employed by the drug syndicate as enforcers.

The bodies of Arano and Pérez were found on Tuesday in this Gulf coast port city.

In the video, five masked and black-garbed men are seen pointing their weapons at the pair.

The two Zetas confessed to the March 17 slaying of the police commander and two subordinates in Boca del Río, a town in Veracruz.

They said Gerardo Monraga was killed because he refused to release the people implicated in a shootout that resulted in the deaths of two top members of Los Zetas.

One of the gunmen confessed on the video to having killed 10 people in Veracruz, having links with the local authorities and police and to supervising about 600 retail drug markets.

They also mentioned several journalists in Veracruz who, they said, gave them money in exchange for "news protection."

They confessed that they killed reporter Roberto Marcos García last November because he revealed connections between police chiefs and the Gulf cartel."

Jihad against retired teachers and elderly couples. This Associated Press (thanks to Jeffrey Imm), however, stays in passive voice as long as it can, before gingerly identifying the culprits as "suspected insurgents," who of course just happen to target Buddhists.

BANGKOK, Thailand: A retired teacher and an elderly couple were shot dead Saturday while four other civilians were wounded in a bomb explosion in Thailand's violent-ravaged south, police said.

Sawai Phrommani, a 62-year-old retired teacher, was killed in a drive-by shooting as he rode a motorcycle home in Pattani's Mayo district, said police Lt. Col. Narat Thepchalerm.

In Narathiwat, suspected insurgents posing as customers shot dead a Buddhist couple _Charin Ngaono, 70 and his 68-year-old wife Rabiep _in their grocery store in Rangae district, police said.

Four Buddhist civilians also were wounded in Yala province, when a roadside bomb exploded as their car passed over it, police said.

Terrorists shatter Thai peace
The Australian ^ | March 24, 2007 | Greg Sheridan

Posted on 03/24/2007 12:18:30 AM PDT by Dundee

TWO weeks ago, gunmen stopped a small passenger van in the street. They forced all of its occupants out and on to the roadside. The gunmen then shot all nine of them dead. Three of the passengers were women, one was a young girl.

Just another day of Baghdad carnage, you say. But no, this was Thailand, traditionally a peaceful, prosperous and stable Southeast Asian state at the heart of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a formal treaty ally of the US and a close trade and diplomatic partner of Australia.

But the truth is that a savage, terrible and appallingly bloodthirsty insurgency is under way in southern Thailand. It is the third great insurgency in the world today, after Iraq and Afghanistan. More people are dying in horrific violence in southern Thailand than in Palestine or the southern Philippines, or in the ethnic strife in some of the outlying islands of Indonesia.

Neither the Thai Government nor the international media quite wants to admit the horrible truth at the heart of the increasingly surreal sadism and violence in southern Thailand. This is an Islamist insurgency. While it is organisationally independent of al-Qa'ida or Jemaah Islamiah, it fits into the global pattern of Islamist insurgency.

...The best estimates are that since January 2004, about 2100 people have died violently in the insurgency in southern Thailand...

The head of the Thai army... is a Muslim and the new military Government said it would be more conciliatory in the south... But the result of all this is that killings have increased to their highest rate yet: up to four deaths a day. The violence has just got worse.

...The insurgent attacks are becoming more savage and provocative. There has been an increase in beheadings. Women and children are frequently targeted...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2007

ALABAMA DEFENSE CONTRACTOR AND ITS OWNER INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL EXPORTS OF MILITARY TECHNOLOGY

WASHINGTON— An Alabama company and its owner have been indicted on charges of illegally exporting sensitive military technology overseas, fraud involving aircraft parts, and submitting false documents to the government, Kenneth L. Wainstein, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, and Alice H. Martin, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, announced today.

The five-count indictment, issued in the Northern District of Alabama, charges Axion Corporation, a defense contracting firm based in Huntsville, Ala., and its owner, Alexander Nooredin Latifi, 59, a resident of Huntsville.

“Keeping sensitive U.S. military technology from falling into the wrong hands is a top priority for the Justice Department,” said Assistant Attorney General Wainstein. “This indictment and other recent illegal export prosecutions should serve as a warning to companies seeking to enhance their profits at the expense of America’s national security.”

"No defense contractor can export an item on the United States Munitions List, to another country, without first obtaining a license from the Department of State. Critical technology, such as the bifilar weight assembly, will be protected through criminal law enforcement where violations are found,” said Alice H. Martin, United States Attorney Northern District of Alabama.

According to the indictment, in September 2003 and continuing thereafter, Axion Corporation and Latifi knowingly and willfully exported defense articles, specifically technical drawings of the bifilar weight assembly for the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, to overseas manufacturers without first obtaining a required license and authorization from the State Department. By law, U.S. companies must obtain a State Department license or authorization before exporting defense articles.

The indictment also alleges that, on or about February 19, 2004, Axion Corporation and Latifi made a fraudulent representation to the U.S. Army concerning an aircraft part in connection with a military contract. Specifically, the defendants represented to the U.S. Army that certain parts were provided by Tungsten Products of Madison, Alabama, when that company was not the supplier.

Further, on or about January 2004, Axion Corporation and Latifi knowingly submitted a false document to the government in connection with a military contract involving a tank part. Specifically, the defendants submitted “First Article Test Reports” which falsely stated that Industrial Fabrications Co., Inc., had conducted testing, when the defendants knew that the test reports were false and the testing had not taken place before a specific date.

Counts four and five of the indictment seek forfeiture of any assets and property derived from the offenses alleged in the indictment, including real property at 317 Nick Fitchard Road, NW Huntsville, Alabama, where Axion Corporation is located, as well as $659,280 and all interest and proceeds derived therefrom.

The maximum penalty for exporting defense articles without a license is ten years imprisonment, a fine of $1,000,000 or both, and a term of supervised release of three years. The maximum penalty for fraud is fifteen years imprisonment, a fine of not more than $500,000, or both, and a term of supervised release of three years. The maximum penalty for filing false documents is five years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, or both, and a term of three years supervised release.

This investigation was conducted by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Inspector General; the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS); Army Criminal Investigation Division; the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David H. Estes, Angela Redmond Debro, and James D. Ingram from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama, as well as Trial Attorney Mariclaire Rourke from the Counterespionage Section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

NEWS RELEASE

OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY
WESTERN DISTRICT OF MISSOURI

www.usdoj.gov/usao/mow/index.html

MARCH 28, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOMALI NATIVE SENTENCED FOR $1.3 MILLION ILLEGAL MONEY TRANSFERS

SOMALI NATIVE SENTENCED FOR $1.3 MILLION ILLEGAL MONEY TRANSFERS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Bradley J. Schlozman, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for operating an unlicensed money transfer business which sent more than $1.3 million overseas, primarily to Somalia.

Serar Ahmed Abdullahi, 43, of Kansas City, a naturalized citizen who emigrated from Somalia in 1993, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner this afternoon to three years and five months in federal prison without parole.

“We take this criminal conduct very seriously as a matter of national security,” Schlozman said. “Somalia is widely considered to be a safe haven and training ground for terrorists, who have taken advantage of the nation’s extraordinarily dangerous and unstable climate to set up their own infrastructure. This security concern compels the United States government to bring a halt to any unlicensed, unregulated and unmonitored cash transfers into Somalia.”

The federal indictment contains no allegations about either the source of the illegally transmitted cash or its destination.

“This defendant, like other hawalladars, as they are called, had no personal knowledge of what happens to the money on the receiving end of the transfer,” Schlozman said. “Because Somalia’s relationship to the United States is severely strained by the dominant presence of the Islamic fundamentalists who control large parts of Somalia, and in the absence of a stable government, we have no means to determine whether any of the transactions ultimately ended up in the hands of terrorists. For obvious reasons, that makes the defendant’s illicit money transfers a direct and considerable threat to our national security interests.”

On Aug. 24, 2006, Abdullahi pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Abdullahi, a taxicab driver, admitted that he collected more than $1.6 million from the Somalian community in the Kansas City area, then transferred that money to another money transmitter in Minnesota as well as a bank account in Switzerland. Those funds were ultimately sent to various recipients in Somalia and elsewhere.

“Money transmitting businesses are required by federal law to register with the Secretary of Treasury of the United States,” James D Vickery, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-Criminal Investigation, said. “Our tax system treats these offenses seriously and the IRS has a responsibility to aggressively investigate and pursue prosecution of individuals who intentionally violate the nation's tax and structuring laws.”

Between Jan. 5, 2000, and Jan. 14, 2003, Abdullahi deposited approximately $1.6 in various bank accounts, primarily in cash deposits structured in a manner to avoid detection of the deposits and transfers. During this same time period, Abdullahi transferred approximately $1.3 million to locations outside the state of Missouri, including a bank account in Geneva, Switzerland, in the name of B.P. Shah and the bank account of Jubba Financial Services, Inc., (later renamed Kaah Express, F.S., Inc.) in Minneapolis, Minn.

Abdullahi was required under federal law to register with the U.S. Department of Treasury in order to operate a money transmitting business, Schlozman said, but did not register. Instead, Abdullahi concealed his operation of a money transmitting business by failing to report the operation of the business on federal income tax returns, failing to report the operation of the business in applications for food stamp assistance to the Missouri Department of Social Services, and initially denying to federal law enforcement officials that he was operating a money transmitting business.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan F. Garrett. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, IRS-Criminal Investigation and theMissouri Department of Social Services.

Australian Detainee Sentenced to Nine Months

By Sgt. Sara Wood, USA
American Forces Press Service

NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, March 30, 2007 – Australian detainee David Hicks, the first person convicted under the Military Commission Act of 2006, was sentenced here today to nine months in confinement, a sentence he will serve in Australia under a diplomatic agreement.

The military commission members recommended a sentence of seven years, which was the maximum allowed by a pre-trial agreement signed March 26. However, that agreement also stipulated that the convening authority would suspend any portion of the sentence beyond nine months. In an earlier hearing today, Hicks confirmed his guilty plea to a charge of material support for terrorism, which he originally entered in an evening hearing here March 26.

In that earlier hearing, Hicks confirmed that he attended several al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan in 2001 and after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, spent time with al Qaeda fighters at Kandahar Airport and at the front lines in Konduz before being captured while fleeing to Pakistan. He did not, however, admit to ever firing a shot or having any knowledge of the 9/11 attacks in advance.

The eight military officers who made up the commission deliberated for just under two hours tonight before delivering the sentence.

In arguing for the maximum sentence, the government’s chief prosecutor, Marine Lt. Col. Kevin Chenail, referred to Hicks by his al Qaeda pseudonym, “Muhammad Dawood,” and called him a highly trained terrorist and an invaluable asset to al Qaeda. Chenail noted that although today Hicks was wearing a suit and tie, he was at one time on the front lines in Afghanistan and is dangerous precisely because he can fit in with the Western world.

“Muhammad Dawood will always be a threat unless he changes his beliefs, his extremist ideology,” Chenail said.

The real damage Hicks can do is to influence other “confused souls” who might follow in his footsteps into a life of terror, Chenail said. Also, he said, there’s no reason to believe Hicks wouldn’t join al Qaeda again if set free.

“David Hicks walked away from Australian freedoms at 24 only to travel thousands of miles to attack American freedoms,” Chenail said.

Marine Maj. Michael Mori, Hicks’ detailed defense counsel, argued that Hicks was nothing more than a high school dropout who couldn’t qualify for the Australian army and became a lowly soldier for al Qaeda. As soon as Hicks got a real taste of combat on the front lines in Afghanistan, he panicked and ran away, Mori pointed out.

“His heart wasn’t in al Qaeda,” Mori said. “He wanted to be a soldier, and it was the one place he could do it.”

Since his capture, Hicks has cooperated with U.S. authorities and worked on completing his high school diploma, Mori said. Hicks’s guilty plea shows that he is on his way to being rehabilitated, Mori said, asking the commission to set the sentence at one year and eight months, which would make Hicks’s total confinement since his capture seven years.

“All I want you to do is give him an opportunity to try to make a new start in life,” Mori said.

In an earlier written statement Hicks submitted through Mori, he apologized to his family, the people of Australia and the United States, and thanked the servicemembers at Guantanamo for treating him professionally. “While not perfect, David feels he’s tried his best to behave at Guantanamo,” Mori read.

The pre-trial agreement states that Hicks will be transferred to Australian custody and control within 60 days of the sentencing, which means he will be back in Australia by May 29. The agreement also prohibits him from communicating to the media for one year about his experiences, capture and detention, and ever profiting from publications about his experiences.

New details on al Qaeda's operations reveal the terrorist group to be an apparently budget-conscious organization that closely tracks payments and members.

Al Qaeda's annual budget

Snip: Al Qaeda has an annual budget of around $30 million to fund its various activities across the globe, according to a former US state official.

Jimmy Gurule, an internationally known expert on international criminal law, specially terrorism, terrorist financing and anti-money laundering, said Al Qaeda has global ambition with the primary objective of unifying billions of Muslims worldwide and can strike any moment with a severity that surpasses the 9/11 attacks.

For the most part, Glenn's radio and TV shows are usually entertaining and make very valid points. Anytime he has Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins on as guests, it's a must watch show IMHO.

As far as I know Glenn is the only TV host who is actively showing his audience the hatred spewing from the mouths of Ahmadinijab and others who are fair-weather "friends".

OPP Warns Of Phony Cop (Canada)
Friday March 30, 2007

Video, with image of perp, at link

It is a breach of trust that makes cops crazy - somebody impersonating one of their own. It's the scenario that's facing the OPP and now they're fighting back.

They're received numerous reports about a man in "uniform" who's telling people he's a member of the Ontario Provincial Police. He's been on a whirlwind tour of hospital emergency departments around the GTA, asking what's being described as 'disturbing' questions. And he appears to be the real thing. He has the costume down pat - complete with the force's official crests. He wears the regulation blue uniform pants. And most ominously, he appears to be packing a firearm on his side.

Cops are sure he's not one of theirs, but they don't know who he is or exactly what he's up - except that it's likely no good. "We would like to know why this is happening," admits Cst. Graham Williamson. "It gives us real cause for concern."

So far, the man has been spotted at St. Michael's Hospital, The Hospital for Sick Children, and Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga among others. He's been to seven ERs within 24 hours and the real cops have no idea what his motive may be or where he got his hands on what looks to be a real uniform.

"It's extremely serious," Williamson adds. "Something like this casts a dark shadow. It does make us look bad." Patients aren't happy to hear about it, either. "I'm scared about us," declares Carlos Mbutu. "That cannot happen in hospitals. Maybe they lack security." The staff at Trillium spotted him on Thursday night and called the real thing when his story didn't check out. That's one of the places where he was caught on security video, and it may be the best clue cops have.

The man is described as being in his early 20s and roughly 6 feet tall. What should you do if you run into someone who ignites your own doubts? A legitimate officer will show an official ID to any citizen who asks for it without complaint. If you're still not sure, you can also call your local police division and check on the name.

FBI Offers Reward In Bomb Scare
3/30/2007

MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- The FBI on Friday offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who placed an explosive device outside a Jewish temple last week in Muskogee. The device was made of an explosive material contained in cooking oil containers and placed inside a shopping cart that was discovered Saturday, March 24, outside the Temple Beth Ahaba, said FBI spokesman Gary Johnson.

The device was deactivated by bomb technicians with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the FBI and sent to an FBI laboratory Quantico, Va., for analysis, Johnson said. He declined to say what explosives were used. A man discovered the device at the temple Saturday evening, removed a homemade timer that was connected to it and brought the timer to a nearby fire department, said FBI agent Kyle Bonath.

The cooking oil containers used to make the device were discarded from a Charlie's Chicken restaurant about a mile from where the temple is located in downtown Muskogee, Bonath said. "We're hoping someone saw someone removing that material from the trash bin or transporting it to the location," Bonath said. "We feel the public probably saw something that could help us with this case." Bonath said the device may have been placed next to the temple as early as Wednesday.

Although a specific motive hasn't been determined, the incident is being investigated as a hate crime, Bonath said. The synagogue was vandalized with a Nazi symbol last year. Muskogee police evacuated several buildings and homes in a five-block area near the temple after the device was discovered. There are no suspects in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Muskogee Resident Agency of the FBI at (918) 687-7500 or Crimestoppers at (918) 682-2677. You may remain anonymous.
