Tori Kovach of Aberdeen, left, is a regular feature on downtown streets, often seen near the Wishkah Bridge holding signs protesting the war in Iraq or chastising President Bush. On Wednesday, Sgt. Brendan Chamburs, the Marine Corps recruiter stationed in Aberdeen, saw Kovach holding a protest sign near Quizno’s and decided to stage a counter-demonstration.

He had his sign made at Coast Line Signs. Kovach was unmoved, saying, “I believe in the military, but I think the military is being misused. They are dying for a lie.” A few people honked their horns as they drove by, but not everyone was inclined to support free speech. Before Sgt. Chamburs showed up, someone threw an egg at Kovach from a passing car, hitting his sign.

Has Kovach ever ASKED folks in the military what THEY think about their mission? I daresay he has not.

Look in your local phone directory and find the USMC, Army, Air Force, USN, or USCG recruiting stations. Take the recruiters a box of fresh doughnuts. Have a cup of coffee with them. Tell them "THANK YOU" through your actions! You will not believe the appreciation they will show you. This requires a little more than just putting a magnetic ribbon on your car, but so much more rewarding.

I did something a little different, I took by $350 worth of gift cards for a restaurant and gave them to the OIC of the USMC Nashville regional recruiting office.

If burning American flags are "symbolic speech" according to the Supreme Court, airborne eggs are surely also protected speech.
