Giuliani's problem with the religious [large graphics]

Posted on 02/18/2007 4:12:23 PM PST by Jim Robinson

I don't know about you, but I doubt the Christian conservatives throughout the red state farm belt and especially down in the South are going to cotton to a liberal New York Yankee coming down to try to clean up crime by taking their guns and bringing abortion and gay unions (gay marriage) into their families, schools and churches.

Baptist, Independent-Fundamentalist, Conservative.

But far from perfect thas for sure. Liberal Yankees like Rudy G. have a snow ball's chance in hell in the south.

Why don't the Southern Baptists support church schools or home schooling - why the insistence on sending kids to public schools ?

..there are 16 million Southern Baptists

Believe me , they are not a monolith

Many believe in homeschooling...

Jim, I believe survival trumps all. Even our strong doctrinal beliefs. Sometimes you have to go outside the system to save the system.

Thank you for the ping, Spirit, and thank you, Mr. Robinson, for another good thread and discussion.

Mia, I choose your post to quote because it seems to me it epitomizes the spirit of this age, something I saw very clearly personified in my personal Bible study this morning - results on my homepage to any who are interested.

The spirit of this age is like that in the camp of Israel just prior to entering the promised land - division in the camp.

Ten spies were sent out from the camp, up into the land to check out what lay ahead, and the ten came back with two differing reports based upon the same evidence - one was favorable and encouraging, but only 2 of the 10 promoted that view; the other report was very discouraging and recommended return to Egypt where the people had been safe and well fed and protected by good masters.

The way the camp lined up under belief in those two reports determined God's choice in who would go up to take the land and who would die in the wilderness.

I'm following Joshua; I'm as bold as Caleb.

He knows all of that, he isn't a dim bulb. He just sees things differently than you or I. He also knows that the "health" provision as currently promulgated is interpreted to mean abortion on demand. Sabr, like Giuliani, is a smart guy but Sabr is being a bit more honest here than Rudy has been.

But if she really is so weak in the Q rating, MiaT, wouldn't Hunter, Tancredo, or any conservative beat her? All the more reason to dump Rudy and nominate a true conservative.

Good question. The answer is no. If the clinton machine can overcome hillary clinton's crimes and keep her out of the slammer (or worse), they can overcome her Q score to put her back in the Oval Office. We must field not the marginal but the stongest. We must think overkill.

The Q score is an adverising metric and has no application to politics.

Politics is precisely the selling of mediocrity, isn't it? ;)

I don't know about you but I didn't know anything about George Bush either, other than his Daddy had been a president I didn't like, before 2000.

I believe the life and the health of a living breathing mother takes precedence over the unborn. Period. Always.

Which makes you pro abortion. And ample reason why pro life folks...

Which makes those like you who consider themselves PRO LIFE but are less concerned about the LIFE of the MOTHER insane in my opinion. And the vast majority of rational thinking people share my opinion.

You really believe that many late term abortions are done because mothers and doctors are both such evil monsters that they will do that gruesome procedure for convenience just because it's available?

OK, I can play this game.

Which makes you a drama queen given to hysterical rants about perceived "insane people". There are no bills presented to Congress or supported by pro life organizations that lack an exception for the life of the Mom. We are indeed pro life, we want Mom and baby to live.

You, on the other hand, are both hysterical and wrong when you claim otherwise. So the question becomes, why the hysteria and false assertions concurrently? Could you possibly do one at a time? Both concurrently are a bit much.

I take back my earlier compliment, you are dim. Well maybe not dim, maybe you are just brain washed. The data is in pal. 95% of abortion is done for convenience. Wake the hell up.

LOL. You call be hysterical? After a claim that anyone who takes very seriously the issue of the health of the mother is not pro life?

I guess that would work if the issue has so consumed you that the only "life" you see is yet unborn.

True anti-abortion people have a difficult position politically. They truly believe life begins at conception. However, the implications of that position in society are too much for most people. It would mean prosecuting doctors/nurses/pregnant women for murder. It would mean banning many contraceptives, and charging people that use them with murder. It would mean police investigations into miscarriages. Thus, abortion will never be banned, and it breaks their hearts.

I sympathize with them.

thank you for your thoughtful response.

1- 'Delusional' is not meant as an insult, but as an objective description supported by fact.

2-I don't believe most--or even many--conservatives, faced with the real possibility of a clinton back in the WH, will do as you say.

3-Rudy's "personal failings" pale beside the clintons' rape, predation, Barrett report documented abuse of power, terrorism failure, sedition, corruption, etc., etc. I think you underestimate the electorate.

4-In the general, in that hypothetical matchup, your choice is precisely Rudy or hillary... and your denial of this plain fact goes right back to 'delusional' and my point 1....

And there is another problem. What you described is a moral and religious issue.

There is also political problem.

How can one rationalize that they are "Conservative" in its true meaning if you are begging for Government intervention into the most minute details of family life.

I have no answer.
