I don't know why you bring guns into this (Religion), but for single issue voters (Abortion), Rudy has no chance at all.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1786945/posts: [from Hartford Courant article]:
"The other candidates talk about social issues and seek to placate suspicious conservatives who've heard their sweet songs before. Giuliani showcases pelts on his belt. The most sumptuous comes from his 1999 battle with the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The museum, which enjoyed some public funding, booked an incendiary exhibit that featured a portrait of the Virgin Mary caparisoned in elephant dung and vulgar photos. Giuliani cut off the museum's public funds. That's something religious Republicans in South Carolina can understand."

He can't count on people like me either. I'm not evangelical or Catholic. I'm a non denominational believer in God who is a conservative.

Personally I like the man and think he was a great mayor and think he could be a great senator but I just can't see him in the oval office.

Yeah, but I love that Muslims in the Middle East think that Rudy is a Jew!

The South voted for George Bush Sr. in 1988.

And they won't vote for Hillary or Osama.

Jim,

The 2nd amendment crowd are one issue voters. They "Don't trust a politician that doesn't trust them with a gun". All other concerns and issues decide which candidate after they pass that test.

You can go to any gun board on the net and Rudy G. is getting panned. There are around 5 to 10 million of these guys out there. Since the AWB is now seriously again being run up the flagpole, they are taking this very seriously...

Ask southern Christian conservatives what the #1 issue is and I'll wager they'll say "the war on terror". And the #1 need in this nation: leadership. That's why Rudy will do fine in the primaries. And with California and New Jersey moving up to Feb. 5, 2008, Rudy will be well positioned in the early primaries. JMHO, of course.

The President is not a legislature or the courts - which is where the 'social issues' are legislated. So the whole threat of Rudy's stated personal views on these issues is WAYYYY overblown.

Rudy knows that trying to impose those views is a recipe for defeat. He is nothing if not a shrewd, dollars and cents kind of guy. A hard-nosed pragmatist, not an ideologue. He will assure the social voters by appointing conservatives in the Judiciary (or he'd be a one-term president), and will veto anything too over the top that Congress passes.

And don't forget the THOUSANDS of "ultra-conservative" Republicans in every state for whom Rudy has personally campaigned since 2001. Doesn't sound like something that a doctrinaire 'committed to social change' liberal would do, does it?

So while he won't be a Reagan or a GWB, his ability - and his desire - to affect these social issues is WAYYYYY overblown.

Where the President has a leading role is in defending this country. And anyone following his career knows that he can and will use the "iron fist" against our enemies. He did it with the criminals in NYC and he'll do it with al Quaeda abroad.

Remember that he personally (and privately, in dead seriousness) asked President Bush to be allowed to "throw the switch" if bin Laden was ever captured, tried and sentenced to death.

See the big picture folks. Hitlary's (or any Dems) Federal Judges are the ones who will try to legislate (imm)morality for decades after her presidency is over!

Rudy will appoint conservatives who won't. Or he'll be a one-termer, and I guarantee you that he is nothing if not a smart cookie. He is not an ideologue but a pragmatist. And pragmatism dictates that he govern as I have laid out above.

Hitlary, OTOH is a doctrinaire Marxist who believes in shoving her policies down your throat at any cost, consequences be damned. She is reckless, power-obsessed, and has a dictator-top-down-what's-good-for-you complex. Its no accident that her Marxist college thesis is still embargoed and the College refuses to release it 37 years later. She learned her craft at the knee of one of the most radical agitator-Marxist college professors whose whole teaching purpose was to instruct his radical students on how to best infiltrate the political system to effect Marxist atheist change.

So when the police come to your door to tell you that you have to send your homeschooler to public school under the law just signed by Hitlary, you won't have me to blame for it - for I will crawl over broken glass and rusty nails to vote against her.

Rudy and Hitlary both may not share all of your 'social views' - though Rudy is a heck of a lot closer to you on them.

But one of them will let sleeping dogs lie, appointing mainstream conservatism which he will be elected to do - while the other, through her administration, allies in Congress, and Judicial appointments - will actively seek to destroy your right to live as you do and to teach your kids what you believe.

And I think you know which one of the two of them I am talking about.
