Conservative Republicans will make a huge mistake if they fail to treat Rudy Giuliani as a serious option for the 2008 presidential nomination. The former New York mayor may have a liberal record on abortion and gay rights - actually, there's no "may" about it - and his messy personal life includes three marriages, but his record as mayor was at times Reaganesque in its willingness to battle an entrenched liberal establishment along a host of fronts. Those who have forgotten his record, or only followed it after 9/11, should read Steven Malanga's article "Yes, Rudy Giuliani is a Conservative" in the winter issue of City Journal (online at city-journal.org). It recounts his groundbreaking initiatives on crime, welfare and dependency, his relentless attempts to reform the public school system (his failure there persuaded him to embrace vouchers), his disdain for social engineering, and his understanding of how high taxes suffocate an entrepreneurial culture.
Giuliani also appreciated the critical role that intact families play in maintaining a healthy society with well-adjusted children, even if his own behavior did not always bear this out.
But if you really want evidence of Giuliani's credentials as a credible Republican candidate, you need to know only this single fact: In the 1990s, the political left in New York despised him. They demonized him without pause, while peddling hysteria about the calamitous effects his supposedly mean-spirited policies would usher in (but didn't).
Put it this way: Even if Giuliani is unacceptable to the social conservatives who dominate the GOP's base, they ought to give the man his due. No candidate so far in the running has jousted more with their own enemies, and none boasts more victories to his credit, either.

Oh, yeah. The GOP "progressive" standard bearer: pro abortion, pro gay rights, pro gun control, pro illigal immigration, pro environmentalism. Go Team!!
Giuliani Addresses Global Warming, Immigration

(CNSNews.com) - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani told a Silicon Valley business group on Monday that he "definitely'' believes in global warming, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He also praised Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for being a "progressive'' leader on the environment and calling for immigration policies that welcome "people who make contributions" to America's economy.
Sorry, not buying it. Guliani is the definition of RINO, and all the media spin in the past few weeks trying to portray him as a Conservative is laughable.
Jim, if the candidate you are supporting in the primaries, still a year away, wins they will have my support. I'm for Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani at this point. As far as I can see no other candidates officially in the race have the capability of leading this nation. They have great ideas like Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter do, but not have the necessary leadership experience, IMHO of course.
Guess you need to ask yourself where your chosen leader wants to lead you.
Maybe so.
I'm looking forward to the debates when we get to see all the candidates on the same stage. That's where things will shake out. Anyway, it's good to have the debate. That's what primaries are all about.
Bye Bye Rudy! Run for the senate in NY, not POTUS!
Put it his way: Rudy is on the wrong side of more issues that make up Conservative values than he is aligned with. Forcing Conservatives to choose an abortion advocate and SSM embolder over personal convictions is dangerous territory for the GOP. Someone so opposed to established GOP principle is the LAST thing Republicans need in the WH with a Democrat House & Senate. Are Republicans so naive they'll believe he'll somehow foward our cause?
The elite of the GOP will push Conservatives so far to the left when Conservatives move, the GOP will fall on its arse.
The GOP ought just come right out and admit it no longer embraces conservative values; it will with Rudy.
I agree. Just ask anyone who doesn't support Bush 100%.
Read it again. By the way, I watched Rudy talking out of both sides of his mouth on Hannity and Colmes. He's pretty clever in the art of political doubletalk.
Here are some examples:
He says he hates abortion, but in the next breath he says, he believes in a womann's right to choose.
He says he was against the ban on partial birth abortion, but he's ok with it as long as it has an exception for the life of the mother.
He says he's against gay marriage but for gay unions and that we must protect the rights of gay people.
He says he understands the second amendment and knows that he can't just take the guns, so he must regulate them "consistent with the second amendment.
Check the Hannity and Colmes transcript if you doubt me.
Weak point...shake things out. More like a staged media event, more talk from the news channels.
If it comes down to that then not me.. I'll stick to voting for someone who stands for principles, morals and values..even if the know-it-alls say that candidate can't win. I won't face my maker and say my excuse for looking the other way was because I was afraid the other person wouldn't protect me from the Islamothals and I might die.
Better dead than red.. maybe instead of just shouting in the wind and hoping everything will turn out ok, just maybe it's time to give up personal safety..maybe it's time to fight for our principles like our forefathers did.. or what do we have if we don't..
He also has made statements to the effect as POTUS, he'd appoint judges who'd not make law from the bench then says he thinks abortion ought be a states' issue - yet the USSC said it isn't. If it's to be a states' issue, the USSC would have to rescind it's prior ruling and those "strict constructionist"? judges would have to make law from the bench.
I might not have my wording/expression exactly correct, but Rudy's double-talk has holes ALL in it and even I can see that.
Do you really think the dims will hold Congress in '08?
Me too.
Don't forget that "Mr. Conservative", Barry Goldwater, changed his conservative stripes on social issues. And all of us would have (should have) have wished Goldwater well in 1964: Vietnam Vets certainly would have.
Do you really think the dims will hold Congress in '08???
The demographics are changing to a nation of illegals and immigrants with chaotic 3rd world problems. The democrats may have as many as 10 million more voters!!!
But will the 'stay at home and not vote unless they agree 100%' pubbies repeat that mistake? Saying that, there are some that probably will.
How about if we don't agree by 70 or 80%?
