The Turning Point on Global Warming (McCain and Lieberman Op-Ed Alert)
Boston Globe ^ | Februrary 13, 2007 | Senator John McCain and Senator Joe Lieberman

Posted on 02/13/2007 5:15:20 AM PST by RWR8189

THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening, that it is a serious problem, and that humans are causing it. The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded there is a greater than 90 percent chance that greenhouse gases released by human activities like burning oil in cars and coal in power plants are causing most of the observed global warming. This report puts the final nail in denial's coffin about the problem of global warming.

In addition, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has identified a warming climate, and the resulting melting of sea ice, as the reason polar bears may now be threatened as a species. The US Center for Disease Control's National Center for Environmental Health has cited global warming as the largest looming public health challenge we face. And President Bush has himself called global warming a serious challenge that we need to confront.

Indeed, if we fail to start substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the next couple of years, we risk bequeathing a diminished world to our grandchildren. Insect-borne diseases such as malaria will spike as tropical ecosystems expand; hotter air will exacerbate the pollution that sends children to the hospital with asthma attacks; food insecurity from shifting agricultural zones will spark border wars; and storms and coastal flooding from sea-level rise will cause mortality and dislocation.

To confront this challenge, we have reintroduced the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act. The bill, which has growing bipartisan support, would harness the power of the free market and the engine of American innovation to reduce the nation's greenhouse gas emissions substantially enough and quickly enough to forestall catastrophic global warming.

Of course anyone who has worked with micro environments, such as fish tanks, knows that excess carbon increases plant growth. Perhaps this is why there is exponential growth in trees and coral reefs. Additionally, global warming will access frozen land in Russia and Canada for habitation and agriculture. These are all bad things why

That was an excellent response by the Czech President, and I would dearly love to hear a similar response from any leader over here, be it the presdient, a Senator or Congressman.

There was also a time when there was a broad consensus that the band 'Wham!' was pretty cool. Go figure.

broad consensus

there is broad concesus that socialists and their lawyers need a new meal ticket, especially now that chiner and vietnam are commu-capitalists and other socialists dictators are either starving or being taken out.

Ya got me. I see longer growing seasons and two crope per year instead of one.

IMO it really doesnt matter anyway, there is nothing we can do about it. Sit back relax, buy a good sun screen and be cool.

I doubt you'll get it. The President of Czechoslovakia comes from a scientific background. With precious few exceptions, all we manage to elect are lawyers.

A week or so ago, I was looking for that polar bear population survey, and failed. Thanks for giving me a better idea of how to find the source.

Global warming is a political ruse meant to greenlight global totalitarian government.

That has to be what is behind this Global Warming nonsense. You never, ever hear anything positive about what a warmer climate would be like (assuming it is warming at all). From what I've read about the medieval warming period, humans prospered in ways never before seen. It doesn't sound that bad to me.....

The debate has ended over whether global warming is a problem caused by human activity.

Oh really? Just when did that happen? Does McCain really expect me to believe a political committee formed by the UN? Folks, this is just one more reason we can not and should not allow McCain anywhere near the oval office.

Thank you for putting the graph up for everyone to see. If you read about climatic cycling over the past 450 thousand years it is obvious that man has very little to do with our global warming today. It happens whether we like it or not.

"THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country"

Consensus is not science.

"that global warming is happening"

Only up until 2000, according to some measures. Bush's fault!

"that it is a serious problem"

Nobody has died of Global Warming. Mankind is exceptionally adaptable.

"and that humans are causing it"

Scientifically Unproved, and possibly unprovable.

"The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded there is a greater than 90 percent chance that greenhouse gases released by human activities like burning oil in cars and coal in power plants are causing most of the observed global warming"

Science is about proof, not probabilities. Until Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, 90% of Europeans concluded the ocean went on forever.

"This report puts the final nail in denial's coffin about the problem of global warming."

Why is this report defininitive, when it modifies the previous reports which were also declared definitive at the time? Does this mean this is the final report of all reports, and that no further report will ever modify it? No.

"In addition, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has identified a warming climate, and the resulting melting of sea ice, as the reason polar bears may now be threatened as a species."

Polar bear populations are at near-all-time-highs.

"The US Center for Disease Control's National Center for Environmental Health has cited global warming as the largest looming public health challenge we face."

The CDC cannot point to a single sick person caused by Global Warming.

"And President Bush has himself called global warming a serious challenge that we need to confront."

It's well past time to point to President Bush as the authority on much of anything.

"Indeed, if we fail to start substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the next couple of years, we risk bequeathing a diminished world to our grandchildren."

Contrarily, we risk bequeathing an enhanced world to our grandchildren. CO2 causes more plants to live better. Warmer climes put more arable land into production. Canadians will have a real country.

"Insect-borne diseases such as malaria will spike as tropical ecosystems expand"

Absolutely refuted by malaria experts.

"hotter air will exacerbate the pollution that sends children to the hospital with asthma attacks"

Not true. The air is getting cleaner in the U.S. so fast that this is unlikely. On the other hand, China, which is exempt from Global Warming's "cure" of Kyoto will belch untold quantities of coal emissions. Maybe Chinese kids will get sicker, in spite of the "cure."

"food insecurity from shifting agricultural zones will spark border wars"

Food hasn't sparked wars in generations. Get over it.

"and storms and coastal flooding from sea-level rise will cause mortality and dislocation"

A key effect of "Global Warming" theory is that warmer oceans near Antarctica and Greenland will cause more snow, and lock up more water on those land masses, reducing sea level. Melting the whole North Pole will cause virtually no increase in sea level, because as we all know, the "tip of the iceberg" is true: Most of it lies under the water, displacing water. Melting it won't cause appreciable water level increases because it is already submerged.

"To confront this challenge, we have reintroduced the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act. The bill, which has growing bipartisan support, would harness the power of the free market and the engine of American innovation to reduce the nation's greenhouse gas emissions substantially enough and quickly enough to forestall catastrophic global warming."

IIRC, if we stopped all human CO2 emmissions now, there would be virtually no change to the temperature speculation models of the "scientists." Marginalia in America won't put a dent in the fraction of a degree increase forecast by the doomsayers.

I can destroy every single sentence in the original clip without even refering to source material.

What else you got, John? A Global Warming Deniers bill to shut me up? (See tagline.)

THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening,

The noun consensus has one meaning: agreement of the majority in sentiment or belief.

Where is the consensus? Why can’t I perceive the consensus? Why isn’t the consensus obvious? I don’t even find a consensus whether the global climate change is warming or cooling. The only consensus I find is that there is global climate change. Is there a consensus that the majority has the correct position?

Quotes about consensus:

Consensus is what many people say in chorus but do not believe as individuals. - Abba Eban

A consensus politician is someone who does something that he doesn't believe is right because it keeps people quiet when he does it. - John Major

To me, consensus seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values, and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects. - Margaret Thatcher
