THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening, that it is a serious problem, and that humans are causing it. The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded there is a greater than 90 percent chance that greenhouse gases released by human activities like burning oil in cars and coal in power plants are causing most of the observed global warming. This report puts the final nail in denial's coffin about the problem of global warming.
In addition, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has identified a warming climate, and the resulting melting of sea ice, as the reason polar bears may now be threatened as a species. The US Center for Disease Control's National Center for Environmental Health has cited global warming as the largest looming public health challenge we face. And President Bush has himself called global warming a serious challenge that we need to confront.
Indeed, if we fail to start substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the next couple of years, we risk bequeathing a diminished world to our grandchildren. Insect-borne diseases such as malaria will spike as tropical ecosystems expand; hotter air will exacerbate the pollution that sends children to the hospital with asthma attacks; food insecurity from shifting agricultural zones will spark border wars; and storms and coastal flooding from sea-level rise will cause mortality and dislocation.
To confront this challenge, we have reintroduced the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act. The bill, which has growing bipartisan support, would harness the power of the free market and the engine of American innovation to reduce the nation's greenhouse gas emissions substantially enough and quickly enough to forestall catastrophic global warming.

Looks like a McCain - Lieberman ticket is in the works, doesn't it?
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Boy they fell for the bait hook line and sinker...
Shame on them.
More lemmings running for the cliffs...
Just another example of why McCain should never be President.
Time to milk the cows again!
Yet another reason NOT to vote for McCain.

Two more yutzes hop on the Al Gore globaloney express.
Let's not be hasty boys.
The following excerpt is from the FOX News website.
The 1999 study in the science journal Arctic that first reported apparent problems among the Hudson Bay polar bear population (search) suggested that their condition may be related to the earlier seasonal break-up of sea ice on western Hudson Bay —a phenomenon that seems to correlate with the 1950-1990 Arctic warm-up. But, as mention previously, the 1950-1990 Arctic warming period seems to be part of a natural cycle and not due to manmade emissions of greenhouse gases.
Moreover, the notion of a declining polar bear population doesn’t square well available information.
A Canadian Press Newswire story earlier this year reported that, in three Arctic villages, polar bears “are so abundant there’s a public safety issue.” The local polar bear population reportedly increased from about 2,100 in 1997 to as many as 2,600 in 2004. Inuit hunters (search) wanted to be able to kill more bears because they are “fearsome predators.”
An aerial survey of Alaskan polar bears published in "Arctic" (December 2003) reported a greater polar bear density than previous survey estimates dating back to 1987.
****Indeed, if we fail to start substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the next couple of years, we risk bequeathing a diminished world to our grandchildren.***
And if we do go about reducing greenhouse gasses we will leave our grandchildren a country with no industry , no jobs, and no means of traveling from one place to another.
Global warming is a political ruse meant to greenlight global totalitarian government.
McKeating and Loserman are politicians.
End of story.
You can do anything you want in the name of preventing global warming because anybody who would question whatever it is you want to do is a heretic - a denier.
I thought from the headline that perhaps they looked out the window, or listened to the news and found that the country is freezing and realized we've all been sold a bill of goods.
Tonight, it is to get well below zero here. It will be interesting to find if it's a record low.
From an interview with the President of the Czech Republic:
IPCC has released its report and you say that the global warming is a false myth. How did you get this idea, Mr President?
A: It's not my idea. Global warming is a false myth and every serious person and scientist says so. It is not fair to refer to the U.N. panel. IPCC is not a scientific institution: it's a political body, a sort of non-government organization of green flavor. It's neither a forum of neutral scientists nor a balanced group of scientists. These people are politicized scientists who arrive there with a one-sided opinion and a one-sided assignment. Also, it's an undignified slapstick that people don't wait for the full report in May 2007 but instead respond, in such a serious way, to the summary for policymakers where all the "but's" are scratched, removed, and replaced by oversimplified theses. This is clearly such an incredible failure of so many people, from journalists to politicians. If the European Commission is instantly going to buy such a trick, we have another very good reason to think that the countries themselves, not the Commission, should be deciding about similar issues.
So what determines whether there is global warming or not is a "broad social consensus"?
And five hundred years ago the accepted wisdom was that the earth was flat. Broad consensus?
Here is yet another reason why McCain will never get the GOP nomination. He may run as an independent but he will never be the GOP nominee.
"THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening, that it is a serious problem, and that humans are causing it."
A BROAD consensus is 1 or 2 out of three of the above. I'll believe humans have any part in it when they uncover factory smokestacks alongside the bones of the dinosaurs who used to graze in the jungles of Antarctica.
BTW, any legislation sponsored by McCain will probably help the environment about as much as McCain-Feingold has helped to further free speech.
When it is repeated enough by the media such that enough politicians believe it.
"THERE IS NOW a broad consensus in this country, and indeed in the world, that global warming is happening, that it is a serious problem, and that humans are causing it. "
Bull$hit!
How about some scientific, peer reviewed studies?
"Scientific" has a meaning different than "a group of folks with a common agenda"
The "Scientific Method" has NOT been applied to achieve the "consensus" alleged here.
