Governor Perry has made a huge mistake in signing an executive order which mandates that all sixth-grade girls entering public schools by the fall of 2008 must be vaccinated for Human Papilloma Virus with Gardasil a product of Merck Pharmaceuticals.
A public debate in the Legislature should have preceded such a drastic move, all . careful consideration.
Parents are being told, "We do not expect nor believe that you will stay abstinent until marriage."
The decision to get young girls vaccinated for HPV is not an easy . In less than a year since approval, 82 cases of serious adverse events following HPV vaccinations of Gardasil have been reported. These incidents should have been discussed thoroughly in open forum in the Legislature before any mandate was even considered.

Parents need to evaluate all aspects of the HPV vaccine.. there are no long-term studies yet on the way these sixth graders might be affected in future years when [they] have their own babies. Since the vaccine has only followed girls for five years, nobody knows for sure how long the vaccination may last ...
HPV vaccine only covers 4 of 30 types of HPV which account for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. That still leaves 30% of cervical cancers and 10% of genital warts not covered.
A definite drawback to Gardasil is that girls must get three full doses of the vaccine for it to be effective. How many families are going to understand the urgency of making sure their girls get three full doses over a six months' period of time?
The seriousness of HPV has been one of the driving forces behind the plea for teens to remain abstinent until marriage. Condoms do not offer

What about if there was a vaccine for genital herpes, syphilis, or gonorrhea? Provided the vaccines were safe and there were no serious side effects, would you be in favor of forcing teenage girls to get this vaccination?
Maybe from the head in the sand people. I've been to six State Conventions and work for 1 or 2 candidates every year. For the first time in my 36 years of voting, I voted against the Republican for Governor.
It's good if you're a Merck stockholder.
"If we can eliminate 70% of cervical cancer through this vaccination, I don't see the downside in such a vaccination".
...the problem that you and a lot of Freepers are having with this is...WHERE'S THE LONG RANGE PROOF THAT THIS WOULD WORK IN THE 1ST PLACE!! Because the FDA says so?! This is all about the $$$. The side effects of such a vaccine are not being discussed. The long term effects of such a vaccine are not being discussed. Even if they were, the gummit has no idea.
Sorry for the double post, but I went to the CDC site, and even they don't seem to have complete info on the vaccine.

There isn't a downside to the vaccination. The downside is the government ordering you to have your child be given the vaccination! Outrageous.
My girl is 33 and I don't recall it at all.
"This will keep you from getting a bad disease. Just like the shots you got for diptheria, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps and chicken pox when you were little. "
Is it really that freaking complicated?
It might be a tad easier to just opt out, as is provided for by the law.
Because it's never been tested on prepubescent girls?
In the study, 552 women in the United States, Europe and Brazil between the ages of 16 and 23 were randomized to receive vaccine or placebo at Day 1, Month 2, and Month 6.
enrolled 12,167 women ages 16 to 26 in 13 countries

Chris Bell praised Goodhair's move. 'Nuff said.
Maybe Governor Kinky wouldn't have been such a bad idea, after all.
The vaccine may be a good idea, but there needs to be parental consent, not any of this state mandated rubbish.

"...teens to remain abstinent until marriage..."
What an absolute novel concept!!!
Which would seem, in itself, a wonderful thing.
The mortality rate for cervical cancer is one half of one percent. Most of those cases were women who didn't have regular pap tests.
Of the 80% HPV infection rate, 70% clear up on their own.
Injecting the entire populace for something with a low mortality rate that can currently be achieved using less expensive methods?
Sounds like another one of Perry Pompadour's boondoggles.
(In my state's defense, our choices for Governor WERE Larry, Moe, and Curly-ette :-)
So that he can become a Merck lobbyist and make some real money.
