Vanity: Questions regarding the Republican Platform, is it pro-life, pro-family?

Posted on 02/04/2007 1:31:12 AM PST by Jim Robinson

I've long assumed that the Republican Party platform included pro-life, pro-family and pro 1st and 2nd amendment planks. Is this true or false? Or is the platform amended each election cycle to conform to the positions of the top polling potential presidential nominee (ie, the one with the most money or star billing and the MSM eye)?

If these planks are based on longstanding, sound conservative principles and are sincerely respected and upheld by the majority of the members, then I'd like to propose a motion that before being seriously considered by the official party powers that be, prospective nominees for the office of President of the United States must in the least demonstrate a solid history of being pro-life, pro-family and pro 1st and 2nd amendments, in addition to a solid history of abiding by and fighting for the other basic Republican planks, ie, national security, national defense, limited government, conservative spending, lower taxes, strict constructionist judges, local control of health, education and welfare, etc, etc.

Or is it too much to ask of the politician asking for our support for the highest office in the land to respect and abide by conservative principles and the basic planks of the party platform?

Or is there a movement underfoot to remove these planks from the platform?

From the FEC database: NEW YORK STATE NARAL INC WOMEN'S HEALTH POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE 04/24/1999 DONATIONS

Giuliani accepted $1,000 from NARAL in 1999. NARAL gave $250 to Hillary Rodham Clinton and $1000--- 4 times as much-----to pro-abortion Giuliani.

Clearly, NARAL trusted Rudy's pro-abortion credentials, and Rudy's willingness to advance NARAL's radical abortion-on-demand agenda, even more than NARAL trusted Hillary.

NARAL donated exclusively to Democrat candidates with one exception----Rudy Giuliani.

Rudy was guest speaker and made The Opening Remarks to the N.A.R.A.L. "Champions of Choice" Luncheon few years back.

Let's just ask Rudy when he and his wife last attended a pro-life rally. Was it before or after Judy and Rudy marched in the gay rights parade? Or maybe it was after Rudy declared his unwavering support for partial birth abortions? Or before Rudy told Phil Donahue he'd give his daughter the money for an abortion (to get rid of his own grandchild).

It seems to me that the other big question is whether FR is about to jettison it's long-held opposition to the Clintons.

NARAL came up a few times during the UMDNJ investigation too.

Why do go back so many years?? Is it because Rudy's post 9-11 activities are so universally lauded???

Reagan I might mention was a Democrat before he was a Republican. People evolve.

Judging from the posts that have been added, I'd say there is a movement in your forum too.

And what would be gained in our fight for our beliefs, if Rudy or McCain were the nominee, and Hillary won because so-called "real Conservatives" stayed home??

That's the problem. And that's what really eats me up.

Because as much as I hate to accept it, we're better off with Rudy than we are with Hillary.

And I really don't like Rudy's pro gay, pro abortion, anti gun positions he's taken in the past.

We really are at a cross roads, aren't we?

The point is that no known true believer could, the way the things are, defeat hillary. So the choice is, to go down in the blaze of glory or to attempt winning [and hopefully to succeed] with, say, Rudy. Given the danger that hillary is, I'd go with Rudy.

Giuliani accepted $1,000 from NARAL in 1999.

And the joke will be on NARAL when Pres. Giuliani appoints strong orginalists to the federal courts.

No conservative forum or website can ignore or ban discussion of the entire field of GOP hopefuls. Nor do they. Every day at Lucianne.com, NRO, The American Spectator, The American Thinker, etc., posters ponder the questions and issues facing GOP voters now. I hope it's possible to debate this like grown-ups here, and elsewhere.

I am personally very sad the WOT seems to be fading as an issue. I guess it will continue that way until another 9-11 and we get the bejeebes scared out of us again. Then who will look good to the GOP??

Longtime Republican donors reported Mehlman's antagonism and outright belligerency towards conservatives.

Interesting. Here in Michigan it was Mehlman and the White House who reportedly supported the social conservative to be the Republican Senate nominee. Others, including long time Republican donors, didn't.

It will be interesting to see what Rudy's hired advisors have him run as.

Rudy left his party affiliation blank when he filled out official paperwork leading some to believe he is leaving the door open to run as a third party.

However, Rudy's "invested" bigtime in the Repub party and has apparently made several commitments to his handlers (in exchange for big bucks support).

Rudy's hard at work now dumping Republican social conservatives overboard---something his handlers desperately want. This would allow them to control every aspect of US politics and government.

Rudy's intentions to marginalize and dump social conservatives are clear: (1) Rudy has calculatedly made plans to avoid "conservative" campaign events. (2) Rudy's strategy includes not entering primaries in primarily conservative states.

Jim, you have built Free Republic into the biggest CONSERVATIVE forum on the internet and it concerns me that so many people here think this should be a Republican forum with no consideration of a candidate's political beliefs.

Opposition to abortion has been part of the GOP platform since Reagan first ran in 1980, so that means that Gerald Ford in 1976 was the only nominee not to run on this platform since Roe v. Wade was forcibly adjudicated in 1973. So, I for one am disgusted that so many here are gleefully supporting Giuliani. If Giuliani didn't have an "R" after his name he would be laughed at here. On the political spectrum he is basically in line with Lieberman and probably a little to the left of Gephardt. He is less of a conservative than even McCain or ANY other GOP candidate and it is beyond me why any conservative would support him in the primaries.

Bring back the platform of lower taxes, less government, strong national security, and personal freedom and responsibility.

Is that part of the platform missing? The Republican party platform has contained a pro-life plank in every presidential election since Roe. There's nothing to bring back, only positions to remove if the checkered pants crowd has their way.

In theory one could, and I hope one emerges. But given who is out there now, I will work like heck to help anyone who can beat Hillary do just that.

Me too. I look back at the last Republican convention where the WOT was the main theme. Rudy's appearance and support of the President and the WOT was most welcome at the time.

I think all of the politicians are only pro-AGENDA.

American voters are somewhat fickled, they deny or promote an candidate based soley on what s/he thinks about abortion, or some other single issue.

Millions of illegal immigrants are sucking our economy dry and filling up our prisons; muslims want to bomb us into oblivion; and the libs want to tax us until we squeak.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't consider abortion, gay marriage and all that in our decision, but I think the house should be secured before worrying about the dirty dishes.

Those problems are going to flourish unabated unless we restore decency, honesty, and respect for our country. Although it's been repeated many times, it needs to be said daily..."...a house divided, cannot stand".

Just as a common burglar knows which house to rob by calculating it's weak points, so do our enemies. They live among us and are free to come, go, and plan as they please.

But the good ol' libs, along with the ACLU and the media, have about mastered the art of diversion; sleight of hand to keep us looking at sex, sports, and music while they quietly dismantle the very fabric of our great nation.

And what are we doing about it? Very little. We make more calls to "American Idol" than we do to our Congressmen. We vote more on "Nashville Star" than we do at the polls. Every election is becoming more and more rigged - and always in the libs' favor (imagine that), yet we let the press continue to piss on our shoes and tell us "it's just raining".

Where's the uproar we heard when the conservatives took over in the 90's; where's the passion of real Americans? Why would ANYONE who has not been brainwashed, even consider voting democrat...you hear what they want, don't you? Socialized medicine, national ID cards, higher taxes, redistribution of wealth...which one of those do you think promotes freedom?

Turn off the TV and pay attention...

What exactly is your proof that this will occur? Even Reagan only managed one out of three with his SCOTUS appointments.
