:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
How al-Qaida Fared in 2006
-Full Story-

In 2006, agents of al-Qaida, as well as those inspired by its ideology, continued their attacks. Violence in Iraq intensified, and Afghanistan saw its bloodiest year since 2001.

Despite worsening chaos on those fronts, counterterrorist forces arrested and killed high-profile terrorists and kept the West free from attack. But these actions don't appear to have weakened the appeal of al-Qaida's agenda. "Home-grown" militants around the world joined its jihad, as regional fighting heightened perceptions of a global war on Islam.

Here's an assessment of some of the most significant gains and losses for al-Qaida last year: Read more..

RONALD GRECULA SENTENCED TO PRISON IN PLOT TO SELL BOMB TO TERRORISTS

(HOUSTON) Ronald Allen Grecula, 70, a resident of Bangor, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to five (5) years in federal prison, without parole, for attempting to provide material support and resources to Al-Qaeda, United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle announced today.

The prison term was imposed by United States District Judge Keith Ellison at a hearing held this afternoon. Grecula pled guilty on September 21, 2006 to attempting to build and offering to sell an explosive device to an undercover officer, whom he thought was a member of al Qaeda.

According to pleadings filed in this case, in April 2005, through approximately May 20, 2005, Ronald Allen GRECULA negotiated with a confidential source, and later undercover officers, to build and sell an explosive device to terrorists groups targeting the United States.

On May 20, 2005, upon arriving in Houston, Texas, GRECULA attended a meeting with the undercover agents at AmeriSuites Hotel, 300 Ronan Park Place, Houston, Texas. In an approximately one-hour long videotaped meeting, GRECULA indicated that he was willing to build and sell an explosive device to a group he believed was affiliated with al Qaeda to be used against Americans.

Following his release from federal prison, the court has ordered Grecula to serve a three (3) year period of supervised release. Grecula has been in federal custody without bond since his arrest in May 2005.

The investigation leading to the charges in this case was conducted by the Joint Terrorism Task Force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeff Vaden and Mark McIntyre.

Former Houston man charged with aiding terrorists
Houston Chronicle ^ | ap

Posted on 02/13/2007 3:32:58 PM PST by mdittmar

A former Houston man arrested in Kenya last month was ordered held without bond today on charges that he was joining with al-Qaida to help overthrow the Somali government and form an Islamic state there.

Federal officials charged Daniel Joseph Maldonado, 28, also known as Daniel Aljughaifi, with undergoing military training with a terrorist organization and conspiring to use a destructive device.

Maldonado was returned to the U.S. on Monday night and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley this afternoon, the U.S. Attorney's office in Houston said. He was ordered held without bond until a detention hearing next week.

Maldonado's arrest marks the first criminal prosecution of an American suspected of joining terrorists in Somalia, Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein said in a statement.

According to the criminal complaint, Maldonado traveled from Houston to Africa in November 2005. By December 2006, the complaint says, he was in Somalia and had joined with the Islamic Courts Union and elements of al-Qaida to fight in a rebellion designed to overthrow the Somalian government and install an Islamic state.

The complaint says Maldonado was issued an AK-47 rifle and attended two military training camps at which members of al-Qaida were present.

Maldonado was captured by the Kenyan military on Jan. 21 as he fled Ethiopian and Somalian forces. He was expelled by Kenya and turned over to U.S. officials for his return to Houston.

The Steyr HS50 is a long range, high precision rifle The guns were part of a shipment of 800 rifles that the Austrian company, Steyr-Mannlicher, exported legally to Iran last year. The sale was condemned in Washington and London because officials were worried that the weapons would be used by insurgents against British and American troops.

Algeria: Al-Qaeda Linked Group Claims Deadly Bomb Attacks

Algiers, 13 Feb. 2007 - The Organisation of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - previously called the Salafite Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) - has claimed responsibility for a series of explosions on Tuesday that killed six and wounded another 16, Arabic satellite TV network al-Jazeera reported. "The brave mujahadeen were able to simultaneously detonate six carbombs targeting several different police stations and national guard barracks in Kabylia," read an Internet statement quoted by al-Jazeera.

At least five car bombs exploded in the cities of Tizi Ouzu and Bourmedes in deadly attacks in Algeria's eastern Kabylia area that police suspected were carried out by the GSPC.

American Citizen Charged With Training in Somalia With Al Qaeda, Learning to Become Homicide Bomber
Tuesday, February 13, 2007

An American citizen charged with receiving terrorist training at an Al Qaeda camp in Somalia — including classes in how to become a homicide bomber and "wage violent jihad" — was taken into custody by FBI agents and returned to the U.S. Monday night night, Justice Department officials told FOX News.

An indictment unsealed Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Houston charges Daniel Joseph Maldanado, 28, a.k.a Daniel Aljughaifi, whose last known address was in Houston, with receiving training from a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to use an explosive device outside the United States.

Maldonado was captured by the Kenyan military on January 21 as he fled to avoid capture by Ethiopian and Somali government forces battling Al Qaeda-backed rebels, Justice Department officials said.

He was turned over to U.S. law enforcement officials last weekend, and flown to Houston on Monday night accompanied by special agents of the FBI. He appeared Tuesday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley, who ordered him detained without bond pending a detention hearing on Feb. 20.

If convicted, Maldanado could face life imprisonment on the bomb-making charge, while receiving military training from a terrorist organization carries a maximum punishment of 10 years, the Justice Department said.

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

GAZA: The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group on Tuesday threatened to retaliate against the United States if it tried to capture its Damascus-based leader.

Washington said on Monday it would offer a $5-million reward for information leading to the capture of Ramadan Abdullah Mohammad Shallah, the Islamic Jihad leader. It offered the same amount for a member of Lebanese Hezbollah. Meanwhile, a Palestinian gunman was killed during a gun battle with Israeli troops on the border with the Gaza Strip, militants and the army said.

Court Upholds Freeze on Islamic Charity
Tuesday February 13, 2007

WASHINGTON - A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the government's decision to freeze the assets of a Missouri-based Islamic charity with alleged links to a foreign group that supports terrorism.

The Treasury Department claims the Islamic American Relief Agency-USA, of Columbia, Mo., is an affiliate of a Sudanese charity - the similarly named Islamic African Relief Agency - accused of financing al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit agreed with a lower court's 2005 decision finding that the charity is a branch of the Sudanese-based agency. Records describe the Missouri charity as an ``affiliate'' and a ``partner'' of the Sudanese group, and the charity sought permission to transfer funds to the group, the appeals court said.

The Missouri charity did not contest the terrorist designation of the Sudanese group, but claims the organizations have independent leaders and separate bank accounts. The Missouri-based group was founded by a Sudanese immigrant in 1985 to raise money for humanitarian activities around the world.

Man Charged In Plot To Overthrow Somali Government 28-Year-Old Accused Of Teaming Up With Al-Qaida
February 13, 2007

HOUSTON -- A man arrested in Kenya last month was ordered held without bond Tuesday on charges that he joined with al-Qaeda to help overthrow the Somali government and form an Islamic state there.

Federal officials charged Daniel Joseph Maldonado, 28, a Muslim convert also known as Daniel Aljughaifi and Abu Mohammed, with undergoing military training with a terrorist organization and conspiring to use a destructive device.

Maldonado, a native of Boston who also lived in Houston, was returned to the United States on Monday night and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney's office in Houston said. He was ordered held without bond until a detention hearing next week. Nancy Herrera, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office, said she was unsure whether Maldonado had an attorney yet.

Maldonado's arrest marks the first criminal prosecution of an American suspected of joining terrorists in Somalia, Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein said in a statement. According to the criminal complaint, Maldonado traveled from Boston to Houston in August 2005 and left Houston three months later for Cairo, Egypt. By December 2006, the complaint says, he was in Somalia and had joined with the Islamic Courts Union and elements of al-Qaeda to fight in a rebellion designed to overthrow the Somalian government and install an Islamic state.

The complaint says Maldonado was issued an AK-47 rifle and attended two military training camps at which members of al-Qaeda were present.

Maldonado was captured by the Kenyan military on Jan. 21 after two days of fleeing Ethiopian and Somalian forces. He was expelled by Kenya and turned over to U.S. officials for his return to Houston. Maldonado told FBI agents in Kenya that he went to Somalia to fight "jihad" for a true Islamic government. "I would be fighting the Somali militia, and that turned into fighting the Ethiopians, and if Americans came, I would fight them too," the complaint quotes Maldonado as telling the agents. He also told the agents he had "no problem" with killing Americans or with the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S.

Although he underwent physical and firearms training with the Islamic Courts Union, he did not finish his training and fight because he contracted malaria. But the complaint says he participated in the interrogation of a flight attendant the group suspected of being a spy. Maldonando told the agents he threatened to kill the flight attendant, who was later killed by others.

Great news.

Then look at it again.

He runs off to Iran to live to fight another day and makes it more difficult for us to track him.

But, he is not stupid. He knew he was out of time and we would capture or kill him.
