Palestinian security arrested seven Iranian citizens during a raid at the Islamic University, a Hamas stronghold in Gaza City, a security official said, and another committed suicide during the raid. The raid came during a large-scale assault by Fatah-affiliated gunmen on the university. A Hamas official denied the claim and said there were no Iranian citizens at the university.
The raid came at the end of a day of clashes that collapsed a three-day truce between the warring factions. Iran has supplied Hamas with funds, but there have been no previous claims of Iranians working with Hamas in Gaza.

U.S. Special Forces using Mullah Omar's compound in Afghanistan to plan missions

FIREBASE MAHOLIC, Afghanistan: Osama bin Laden built it. Taliban leader Mullah Omar lived in it. But today it's men of the U.S. Army's Special Forces who call it home.
Firebase Maholic, a sprawling and spacious compound on the outskirts of the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, is plush living by typical standards of the Special Forces, known as the Green Berets. There's plenty of serious work here. A constant roar of shooting-range gunfire bounces off a towering granite peak behind the complex. Military missions are planned here. And Special Forces soldiers recently started training 130 new Afghan recruits for the country's fledgling auxiliary police force.
"The irony of this is that the home of the (Taliban's) supreme leader is being used to train forces whose mission it is to destroy the force he created," said Rusty, the team leader of a Special Forces detachment. Teams usually consist of 12 members. Rusty, like all Green Beret soldiers in the field, is not allowed to be fully identified.

Saudi police seize armed man entering Mecca mosque

RIYADH - Saudi police arrested a man with weapons hidden under his clothes as he tried to enter the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest site, a Saudi security official said on Friday.
Police stopped the man late on Thursday because he appeared to be acting strangely. He was carrying a revolver and a sub-machinegun under his clothes, and was wearing what appeared to be a suicide belt but which later proved to be fake. The man's nationality was not clear.
Militants sympathetic to Al Qaeda launched a campaign to topple the U.S.-allied Saudi monarchy in 2003. Sunni-Shi'ite Muslim violence in Iraq and Lebanon has raised fears of sectarian strife across the region. Militants stormed the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979, in a rebellion that was crushed two weeks later.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "JERUSALEM – Hamas today carried out an ambush in which it obtained an American weapons shipment transferred last night to militias in the Gaza Strip associated with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party, top Hamas officials told WND.
Fatah at first told reporters the shipment contained medical equipment and tents and then claimed the shipment consisted of engineering equipment.
The U.S. weapons were provided to Abbas purportedly to bolster Fatah forces against Hamas, according to defense sources. The two factions have engaged in nearly two months of deadly clashes after Abbas called for new Palestinian elections in a move widely seen as an attempt to dismantle the Hamas-led PA.
Palestinian officials and sources in the Israeli Defense Forces told WND four trucks filled with U.S. weapons were transported last night from Egypt through the Kerem Shalom crossing into Israel and from there delivered by an IDF convoy to Fatah security officials.
The American weapons shipment, the sources said, contained rocket-propelled grenades, more than 1 million rounds of ammunition and bullet-proof vests."

Federal jury convicts Indian national on 5 counts for role in large-scale human smuggling ring
Defendant arranged transportation for aliens smuggled from India and Pakistan
SEATTLE - An Indian national from Kent, Wash., faces up to 10 years in prison after being convicted here yesterday for his role in a large-scale human smuggling network that illegally brought Indian and Pakistani nationals across the U.S.-Canada border into Washington state.
Following a seven-day trial, a federal jury found Harminder Singh, 38, guilty on charges of conspiracy to smuggle and transport illegal aliens, bringing an illegal alien to the United States, two counts of transporting illegal aliens, and one count of harboring an alien. Upon completion of his jail term, the government will seek Singh's deportation from the United States.
Singh's conviction follows a far-reaching investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection into the human smuggling scheme. The multi-agency probe revealed that the defendants charged aliens between $20,000 to $35,000 for passage through Canada into the United States. According to testimony in the case, Singh served as the point of contact for the smuggled aliens and arranged for their transportation to cities throughout the United States.
"This case illustrates that ICE, working closely with our federal and international counterparts, is committed to identifying and dismantling human smuggling operations," said Leigh Winchell, special agent in charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Seattle. "Individuals who engage in this type of activity will be brought to justice."
During the investigation, Singh was recorded on numerous wire-tapped phone calls discussing smuggling activities with his Canadian co-conspirators. Singh also accompanied a smuggled alien from Seattle to New York, paying $2,000 in illegal transportation costs.
A total of 19 defendants were charged in two separate indictments in connection with the smuggling ring. To date, 11 have been convicted or entered guilty pleas. Four additional defendants are being extradited from Canada to face charges in the United States.
Singh remains in federal custody pending his sentencing. No sentencing date has yet been set.

Suspicious crafts
28.01.2007 0610 UTC in position : 11:20.0N - 065:09.9E, Indian Ocean.
A vehicle carrier underway received a call on VHF ch.16 from a small craft asking for fresh water. The craft closed in to 2 nm from the starboard quarter. Two other craft approached the ship on the port and stbd bow. Ship increased speed, raised alarm and sounded whistle. Later, the craft reduced speed and moved away.

27.01.2007 0530 LT in position 07:01.38N – 079:39.22E, Colombo Roads, Sri Lanka.
While a container ship was waiting for pilot, port control instructed master to proceed to open sea at full speed. Whilst underway, small boats followed the ship and one of the boats with two persons on board hit ship’s hull at stbd quarter and exploded. Another boat continued to chase the ship. Master immediately called port control for assistance. Two naval boats attended and finally destroyed the boat. Five doors to accommodation and six empty containers damaged.
26.01.2007 0330 LT in position : 06:12.64S - 108:26.01E, Balongan anchorage, Indonesia.
A tanker had one of its liferafts stolen while she was at anchor. The robbers boarded via a small boat. Local police and port security were informed via the local agent.
22.01.2007 1800 UTC in position 01:42N - 101:29E at Dumai anchorage, Indonesia.
Duty officer on an oil tanker at anchorage raised the alarm and alerted the crew when he noticed one robber on board and another attempting to board. The robbers jumped over board and escaped.
21.01.2007 2025 UTC in position 03:38.7N - 099:30.0E, 16nm off Kuala Tanjung, Indonesia.
Several unlit fishing boats approached a container ship underway. The master, suspecting piracy increased speed and started taking evasive action. One of the boats was hit on the stbd bow. The emergency alarm was raised and a search carried out. Two persons were found onboard. No one was injured. No arms were found on them however they were carrying mobile phones. Fearing further attacks and repercussions, the master continued his passage towards Singapore. The owners/agents are making arrangements to handover the two persons to authorities for investigations.
20.01.2007 0930 UTC in position 05:33.5N - 005:24.5E, Chanomi Creek, Nigeria.
Armed militants blocked the channel with many boats with sophisticated heavy weapons. They forced the master to stop the vessel, drop anchor and to lower the gangway. 17 crew members were abducted by the militants who boarded the vessel. The remaining militants took seven crewmembers as hostage and hijacked the vessel. The pilot, on board at the time, was later released. Negotiations between Nigerian authorities and militants are in progress
16.01.2007 2240 LT in position 12:01.75S - 077:11.77W, Callao anchorage, Peru.
Five persons, armed with knives, were seen climbing the stbd side of a general cargo ship at anchorage. The master raised the alarm and the robbers escaped in a wooden boat. The attempt was aborted.
