Beirut, 22 Feb. 2007 - Lebanese police on Thursday seized 19 explosive devices and around a dozen detonators found in a tunnel in Beirut's Christian neighbourhood of Ashrafieh. The find is set to increase tension in the country where on Tuesday bomb disposal experts defused a rubber tyre filled with TNT explosives in the capital's southern Shiite suburb of Bir Hassan.
On 13 February two bombs exploded in two separate buses near the Christian town of Bikefayat killing three people and injuring 17 others. Former Lebanese president Amin Gemayel whose Christian Maronite family hails from Bikeyafat has described the recent incidents involving explosives as evidence that "a cold war is taking place in Lebanon." Gemayel is a prominent member of an anti-Syrian coalition backing the government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora whose resignation is being sought by pro-Syrian parties led by Hezbollah.

Afghanistan: Taliban Commanders Captured
Kabul, 22 Feb. - Afghan military forces backed by NATO troops have captured two Taliban commanders in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika in the district of Gayan. This is according to a statement released by the Afghan minister of defence on Thursday.
The two Taliban militants, identified as Mullah Khair Gul and his deputy Mullah Amin Gul, were captured after a brief exchange of fire late on Wednesday.

Washington, 22 Feb. - Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network continue to operate from the area that straddles the Durand Line, the US State Department has said, without specifying whether the alleged al-Qaeda camps are on the Afghan or Pakistan side of the border. "We continue to be concerned about the existence of Al Qaeda’s leadership that’s out there, Osama bin Laden among others," the department’s deputy spokesman Tom Casey told a briefing in Washington. He was commenting on a New York Times report earlier this week that Al Qaeda leadership has successfully revived the terror network, working from bases in North Waziristan.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry has already dismissed the report as ‘absurd’, noting that in the presence of 80,000 Pakistani troops in the tribal region it was not possible for any group to establish its bases in that area. North Western Frontier Province Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai also dismissed the report as speculative. “Why should they come here looking for safe havens when the whole of Afghanistan is a safe haven?” he asked.
The State Department’s response, which confirms the presence of the al-Qaeda network in the region without blaming Pakistan, conforms to US policy towards Islamabad. Reports in the US media say that the State Department recently opposed a Pentagon proposal to launch direct strikes on the alleged al-Qaeda hideouts in Waziristan because it fears that such moves can destabilise the Musharraf government and thus create more problems for Washington in the region.

Muslim cleric killed in Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA, February 22 (Itar-Tass) - Unidentified assailants killed the mullah of neighborhood mosque in Makhachkala's Nagornaya Street on Thursday, city police told Itar-Tass. "The body of Dagir Kachayev, 53, was found by parishioners in the ablution room before the prayer," police said.
Kachayev was shot twice in the head. Supposedly, he was killed at 06:00, Moscow time. Detectives found two shell casings from Makarov pistol at the scene. A criminal probe has been launched.

Egyptian border and security authorities have arrested 3 Palestinians and Egyptians in the Sinai region, including one who was wearing an explosives belt and had crossed from Gaza to Egypt in an underground tunnel, security officials said Wednesday. The authorities put their security forces in northern Sinai on high alert Wednesday in a bid to make sure that no more armed people were at large. Police set up more checkpoints and border guards were seen using iron poles to probe the ground near the newly found tunnel in a search for more.
One of the Palestinian detainees, a man in his early 20's, was caught Tuesday as he tried to cross the Gaza-Egypt border in an underground tunnel near the Egyptian border city of Rafah. He had wrapped himself in an explosives belt, said the soldier who caught him, Mohammed Abdel Wahab. The arrested man told Egyptian state security officials that he had been plotting an attack with other Palestinians in Sinai, said an official.

Group Decries Classroom Distribution of Anti-Islam Materials

RALEIGH, N.C. - A high school teacher allowed a group whose declared mission is to "raise an awareness of the danger of Islam" to distribute literature in his class, including a handout titled "Do Not Marry a Muslim Man," according to an advocacy group.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations says a representative from the Kamil International Ministries Organization, based in Raleigh, spoke to a ninth-grade world history class at Enloe High School and distributed the literature, which also discussed Jesus.
The father of a Muslim student reported the incident, said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. The council wrote to Wake County schools Superintendent Del Burns asking that the incident be investigated and that the teacher be disciplined.

Islamabad, 22 Feb. 2007 - A cleric in a northern Pakistani village has opposed a foreign-funded polio vaccination campaign of the Pakistan government, urging locals not to take any preventive measures against polio "as those killed during an outbreak are martyrs". "I must tell my brothers and sisters that finding a cure (vaccination) for an epidemic before its outbreak is not allowed in Sharia ," said Maulana Fazlullah during a Friday sermon in Mam Dherai village where he is building a madrassa with local funds.
“According to Sharia, one should avoid going to the areas where an epidemic has broken out, but those who do go to such areas and get killed during an outbreak are martyrs,” he said. The provincial government has launched an anti-polio campaign to run between February 20 and 22 in selected parts of the province, but there have been reports of people refusing to get their children vaccinated.
Sermons like this are influencing people into refusing polio vaccination in many parts of the NWFP. Like Nigeria, Pakistan is another country where clergy is blocking efforts aimed at eliminating fatal diseases like polio. Cases of people misbehaving with polio vaccination staff have been reported from several areas. Recently, a surgeon, Dr Ghani Khan, was killed in a bomb blast in remote Bajaur Agency, causing postponement of the anti-polio campaign, official sources said.
Swat is one area where polio staff is facing resistance, said an official, adding that deeply religious people often resisted things involving foreigners. Maulana Fazlullah suspects the intentions of foreign agencies involved in funding drives against fatal diseases: “I don’t understand why foreigners would think of our well-being when we see that they are killing Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq.” He cited the example of a companion of the Prophet who, he said, was ‘martyred’ during an epidemic.
Maulana Fazlullah - who is the son-in-law of Maulana Sufi Mohammad, leader of the defunct Tehreek-i-Nifaz-i-Shariat Mohammadi which sought to have Sharia law replace civilian law -- has gained popularity in the villages and hamlets of the Swat province due to his religious teachings transmitted through an illegal FM radio station. His Friday open air sermons attracted large crowds.
The health department also holds clergy responsible for the refusal of the people to get their children immunised against polio in some districts of the NWFP. Last year, 15 polio cases were reported in the NWFP -- seven belonging to the tribal agencies and eight to the settled areas, officials said, adding that in 2007, a 10-month-old was detected with the polio virus in Nowshera.
“The propaganda of the clergy is causing more and more people in Swat, Bajaur, Lakki Marwat and Momand agency to refuse polio drops for their children,” said an official of the Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) run by the NWFP Health Department. In the wake of the killing of surgeon Ghani Khan in Bajaur, the polio staff, mostly comprising locals, had refused to go ahead with the anti-polio campaign in the agency, sources said.
Confirming the postponement of the anti-polio drive, an official said the government was faced with multiple obstacles like staff security, inaccessible areas and presence of large number of Afghan refugees. “Most of the eight people, detected with the polio virus in the settled areas, were of Afghan origin,” official said.

SOFIA -- Three Muslim men and one woman arrested in Bulgaria for promoting radical Islam and calling for a jihad via two websites will be released on bail today, prosecutor Chavdar Angelov announced on Thursday. The prosecutor said posting radical ideas on a website was a minor offence in Bulgaria and the four would be released. They can leave the country anytime they want.
According to the Bulgarian punishment code the severest punishment in Bulgaria for promoting radical islam is a fine of 300 levs (150 euros). The four have no other previous offences, Mr Angelov told reporters.

Schools and Businesses Close in Pakistan Following Threats From the Taliban

In what is being seen as an attempt by the Taliban to increase their sphere of influence, threatening letters and phone calls have been received by schools and foreign banks in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP).
They are the first warnings to be issued to schools and businesses outside of the restive tribal areas and closer to more populated areas, such as the city of Peshawar. The anonymous letters and phone calls warn the schools and businesses to shut down or face violent consequences.

Congressional Republicans have pledged to give to charity $15,000 donated by a New York businessman indicted last week for terrorism financing, money laundering and fraud if he is convicted.
Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari was arrested Thursday and charged in a five count indictment unsealed Friday with accepting payment to secretly transfer $152,000 "that he believed (was) being sent to Pakistan and Afghanistan to be used to support a terrorist training camp ... by, among other things, funding the purchase of equipment such as night-vision goggles."

CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 22, 2007 - The Port of Charleston, S.C., is extending its new container security network to another three terminals, it was announced Thursday.
The South Carolina State Ports Authority (SCSPA) signed an agreement to expand the SaviTrak infrastructure that handles RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) data that keeps track of containers and their contents at the Atlantic Coast harbor.
"In an era of constant terrorist threats and growing trade, it's vital that we balance commerce with security," Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said in a news release. "Projects that bolster the Port of Charleston's aggressive port security posture while facilitating cargo flow are exceptionally important."
The four terminals that will be outfitted with the RFID system handle about 2 million containers per year from points of origin in Europe, Latin America and Asia. Part of the U.S. SAFE Port Act of 2006 is a requirement for technology to guard against tampering with sealed containers and a means of tracking their movements. Such systems are seen as helping preventing terrorists from smuggling weapons of mass-destruction into the United States as well as theft of contents by common criminals.

Officials warn of terrorism in Bangkok
BANGKOK, Feb. 22 -- Thailand's defense minister is warning Muslim insurgents in the south of the country could soon target the nation's capital for terrorist attack. "It is possible that insurgents will expand their attacks to Bangkok, because we have learned of their movements in various universities where they conceal themselves in uniforms of students," said Gen. Boonrawd Somtas, according to a report in the Bangkok Post's Friday edition.
Gen.Boonrawd's comment echoed the concern expressed by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, who said on a television interview program Thursday that the country's Internal Security Operations Command was also considering the possibility.
Thailand's four southern provinces, which are predominantly Muslim, are plagued with violence from Muslim separatist groups. Last Sunday night, coinciding with the Lunar New Year, more than 50 coordinated bomb and arson attacks rocked the region, killing at least six people and wounding many others. Security in Bangkok has been increased as a result of Muslim unrest in the south and other politically motivated bombings in Bangkok on New Year's Eve.

Extremist Muslims who force vulnerable teenage girls to convert to Islam are being targeted by police, Met chief Sir Ian Blair has revealed. Police are working with universities to clamp down on "aggressive conversions" during which girls are beaten up and forced to abandon university courses.
The Hindu Forum of Britain claims hundreds of mostly Sikh and Hindu girls have been intimidated by Muslim men who take them out on dates before terrorising them until they convert.

QUETTA: Quetta police seized 8 kilogrammes of explosive material, a detonator and a remote-controlled bomb from the Hazar Gangi area on Thursday, but no arrests were made.
Police received a tip off that unknown men planning a terrorist attack had hidden a large quantity of ammunition and explosive material in a drainpipe in the Hazar Gangi area. Following this, police carried out a raid and seized 8 kilogrammes of explosive material, a detonator and a remote-controlled bomb. Security for all key buildings has now been tightened, and policemen in plainclothes have been deployed to sensitive areas.

BEIRUT: Lebanon's security forces found bomb-making equipment in three separate caches on Thursday, just two days after a bomb was discovered in Beirut, sowing new fears among a public that is still reeling from recent bus bombings and street clashes. A source close to the Internal Security Forces (ISF) said Thursday's first discovery was made by a scrap collector, identified only as "Malek," who found 19 sticks of TNT - a total of about 9 kilograms - in the capital's Achrafieh neighborhood. The explosives were inside in a wooden box placed in a dumpster on Hikmeh Avenue leading to Corniche al-Nahr, facing the Murr Television Station and the Mont Liban Radio building.
The discovery was made at approximately 8:30 a.m., and police rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough search. Half an hour later, some Sukleen employees found an aluminum box packed with 13 detonators about 200 meters away from the first discovery.
Then, at 6:30 p.m., eight bombs were found on the road leading to the Kesrouan village of Ghbaleh, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Pakistan test-fires long-range missile
ISLAMABAD (CNN) -- Pakistan successfully test-fired on Friday a new version of a ballistic missile that is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 1,245 miles (2000 km), Pakistani military sources said.

Angry U.S. tourists break Costa Rican mugger's neck

Authorities in Costa Rica are crediting a retired member of the U.S. military with the bare-handed death of a mugger who tried to hold up a tour bus of senior citizens.
According to an Associated Press report, the police chief in the city of Limon said the 12 senior citizens on a tour bus were accosted by a suspect identified as Warner Segura, 20, and two others.
The three alleged muggers were armed with a knife and a .38 caliber revolver and tried to hold up the occupants of the tour bus, Limon Police Chief Luis Hernandez said. But one of the members of the tour, an unidentified retired U.S. military member, put Segura in a head lock, and the other two suspects fled.
Segura suffered a broken clavicle in the head lock, and when his two companions fled, the tourists took him to the Red Cross for medical treatment, but he was pronounced dead, authorities reported.
Hernadez reported that no charges were being considered against any of the tourists, who left on schedule on their Carnival cruise.
"They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up," the police chief said. He noted that Segura previously had been charged for assault.
The cruise line issued a statement that the passengers had arranged the outing on their own.
"According to witnesses, while sightseeing at a local beach, a group of guests were approached by three assailants, one of whom was armed," the line based in Miami said. "The victims struggled with the armed perpetrator, and were able to disarm him. During this process, the gunman's two accomplices fled the scene.
"In the course of disarming and restraining the assailant, he died from apparent asphyxiation," the company told the Associated Press.

"Blogger gets 4 years for insulting Islam"

SNIPPET: "ALEXANDRIA, Egypt -- An Egyptian blogger was convicted Thursday and sentenced to four years in prison for insulting Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and Egypt's president, sending a chill through fellow Internet writers who fear a government crackdown.
Abdel Kareem Nabil, a 22-year-old former student at Egypt's Al-Azhar University, an Islamic institution, was a vocal secularist and sharp critic of conservative Muslims in his blog. He also lashed out often at Al-Azhar -- the most prominent religious center in Sunni Islam -- calling it "the university of terrorism" and accusing it of encouraging extremism.

Judge Ayman al-Akazi issued the verdict in a brief, five-minute session in a court in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. He sentenced Nabil to three years in prison for insulting Islam and the prophet and inciting sectarian strife and another year for insulting President Hosni Mubarak.
Nabil, wearing a gray T-shirt and sitting in the defendants pen, gave no reaction and his face remained still as the verdict was read. He made no comment to reporters as he was immediate led outside to a prison truck.
