CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - Shawn Hornbeck's parents hope "to step out of the spotlight" to focus on their abducted son's healing now that he has returned home.
That plan to take a lower profile was announced Tuesday during a news conference, as a suburban St. Louis homebuilder detailed plans to build a new house for Shawn and his parents, Craig and Pam Akers. The home will include office space for the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, which Shawn's parents began as a means to aid in the search for missing kids soon after Shawn disappeared in 2002.

There were trying to get in touch with Shawn's parents. I watched their broadcast and they did do an interview with Chris Diamond. He's a supporter and a super guy who has been there from the beginning.
Tim Miller from Texas EquuSearch also called me with the news.

For you to blame Shawn's family , after all the WONDERFUL things they have done for missing children's family groups infuriates Me ! Shawn's Dad lost a leg while searching for a missing child in Canada , & they depleted their lives savings helping other missing children . They went on Oprah to keep the 2000+ Stalking reporters away , & they did NOT recieve money for their appearance either !

No doubt! I hope they cash in big for crying out loud. You know, before people got all high and mighty about what other people "got" from private donations, there used to be a show called "Queen for a Day" that gave all kinds of swag to the gal with the saddest story. I hope Shawn gets a great big gold and diamond dollar sign necklace. Yeah, I said it. Cash in big.
And all those naysayers judging the parents - tell me you've never ever made a boneheaded move and used bad judgement due to high emotion and fatigue. I made a couple of dumb decisions (and comments) going through the process of disconnecting my mother from her life support. Thank God I didn't have a microphone and camera in my face broadcasting it across the country at the time. I would have jumped off a bridge.
Amen to that. And may the vermin who took these innocent boys burn in hell.
Actually it was the massive media coverage & Mitchell's description of the truck that saved those 2 boys . I know many parents would do anything to get the most media exsposure in hopes of someone reconizing their child & getting them back !
If the media didn't saturate the white truck & the kidnapping story who knows what hell would be going now as i type ....

You can also go to the RachelCooke message forum board & read all the wonderful things the Akers have done for the Cookes & other missing families.
Apparently, you haven't paid attention to any of the press conferences Akers gives, because in most of them, he spends time advising parents on what to do to avoid the fate they suffered. He also plugs efforts to help find other lost kids through his foundation and other missing child foundations.
As for Oprah, as I've said several times before, she was a victim of child molestation, herself. So she can empathize with Shawn. This isn't about Oprah telling you how to feel about child molesters --- this is about Oprah allowing a child to explain why a 15-year-old shouldn't be bashed for failing to escape a monster and about his parents offering insight to help prevent future tragedies.
This family could have chosen to go with a media outlet that paid big bucks. Or they could have chosen to clam up and told people to buy their book. Instead, they went on Oprah FOR NO MONEY, so they could try to enlighten the largest audience possible.
It is a shame that you are so wrapped up in your own hatred and envy of Oprah Winfrey that you have to bash dedicated parents who been nothing but selfless. Through her show and with her money offered as a bounty, Oprah has helped to catch at least 2 sex offenders. How many have you taken off the street?
And if you keep score by money, I feel sorry for you. I can guarantee you that isn't how God keeps score.
Given what this child has been through the past 4 years, I have no idea why his parents would leave this kind of decision in his hands. Not at all wise, from what I can see.
Second, even if he didn't want to appear, I think it would have been a good idea for them to appear without him because they were being hounded with questions.
They could have, and I wouldn't really have had an issue with that. But if they truly want to be out of the limelight, the best thing to do is just ignore all the media requests for interviews. Walk right past the reporters in your yard they are aren't there. As long as they keep making any kind of statement, it's going to 'feed the lion.'
With all the vicious speculation surrounding Shawn, can you imagine how much worse it would be if he had never been seen in public and all interviews were refused?
I think the speculation is fueled by them giving attention to the media. If they had quietly taken their son home and ignored the media, there'd be little to no speculation because there would be nothing to speculate about.
And, even if they did, the parents, and apparently Shawn, felt it was important to speak out to help other missing children.
I never watch Oprah, so I obviously did not see the interview. What specifically did they do that could have helped other missing children?
He did nothing wrong.
True, he did nothing wrong. But I think it was very unwise for his parents to allow him to appear on Oprah less than a week after being rescued.
