CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - Shawn Hornbeck's parents hope "to step out of the spotlight" to focus on their abducted son's healing now that he has returned home.
That plan to take a lower profile was announced Tuesday during a news conference, as a suburban St. Louis homebuilder detailed plans to build a new house for Shawn and his parents, Craig and Pam Akers. The home will include office space for the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, which Shawn's parents began as a means to aid in the search for missing kids soon after Shawn disappeared in 2002.

It is astounding to me that, in a world where people like O.J. Simpson and Monika Lewinsky get book deals and people get fortunes for eating bugs on Fear Factor or stabbing people in the back on Survivor, anyone would begrudge the Akers family getting a generous gift! Why can't people simply be happy for them. It really shows an ugly side and I'm starting to wonder if that is part of human nature in general, or if it more prevalent among Freepers.
That would be great, the family certainly deserves a vacation. I know the Akers sacrificed a lot thru the years not only for themselves and other families.
Actually, the more I think about it, you're right. Burbank Karl and people like him can't be a reflection of the freeper mindset because freepers are conservative. Burbank Karl sounds more like a class-envy liberal. You know the type that cries that CEOs making "obscene" profits or whine about oil companies? Liberals are always griping whenever anybody else has more than them. That is probably where Burbank Karl is coming from --- plain old liberal envy.
Ahhhhh.. you know how those professor types are. They're always spouting Marxist stuff -- jealous of anyone who has more than them. I suppose he's kicking himself that his son wasn't abducted and sodomized for 4 years, so he could cash in a drop that pesky teaching job.
Yup we quit after we went on Oprah.
Seriously if you want to protect your kid tell all the news to stuff it and move to a new place.
How do you know it's not true Are you a family member?
I'm sure the moniker "Oprah is the anti-christ" has nothing at all to do with his opinion on the issue. :-)
Sorry -- post 207 was for Halls.
Yes. It was idiotic.
Inquiring minds wants to know...
I guess I need the psychotic mess that is Oprah to tell me how I should feel when some dirt bag takes a kid and molests them? Believe me Oprah would be horrified at my justice for child molesters. It would be a very long and painful death.
Oh yea I like your generalizations so I went with them also. You don't know $hit about me lady - except that I would torture child molesters to death and I hate Oprah for all of the damage she has caused this society.
Do they keep score in your kids soccer games? Because the life keeps score - usually with money.
No, but she made the absolute statement - not me.
Where is his real father? How come we never hear from him?
I know this step-father was only in the picture a short period of time before Shawn disappeared, so I was curious if he was ever a suspect. You seem to know quite a bit about the case, so would you know the answer to this?
I would speak to the press, to help other missing children, but my child would not be present. That's just my take on it.
I Agree , The Evil Malice Shown Towards Shawn & His Family Is Very Sad & Very Disturbing !
The Outcry against Evil Devlin remains Quite Silent , Which is just as Disturbing !
The real father is dead. The stepfather was in the process of adopting Shawn when Shawn was snatched. To my knowledge the step dad was not suspect.
Very true. If that was my son he kidnapped, and probably did so many heinous things to, I'd like for them to give me 5 minutes alone with him.
That said, I still think the kids should have been shielded from the press, after it was all said and done.
I agree with you however I guess it was their choice to make. Whether wrong or right, history will tell the tale. We really do not know how we would react, what choices we would make, what choices we would make under duress unless we have been there. But by the way some act on here, the parents have committed the unpardonable sin. Get over it already. It is like beating a dead horse.
Thankfully kids come with a very good bounce back feature from things adults do - in most cases.
I also wish the families the best and am glad they got their kids back. I hope the dirt bag has special place in hell.
