Why Are There So Many Single Americans?
New York Times ^ | 21 January 2007 | Kate Zernike

THE news that 51 percent of all women live without a spouse might be enough to make you invest in cat futures.

But consider, too, the flip side: about half of all men find themselves in the same situation. As the number of people marrying has dropped off in the last 45 years, the marriage rate has declined equally for men and for women.

The stereotype has been cemented in the popular culture: the hard-charging career girl who gets her comeuppance, either violently or dying a slow death by late-night memo and Chinese takeout...

But when it comes to marriage, the two Americas aren’t divided by gender. And it’s not the career girls on the losing end. It’s their less educated manicurists or housekeepers, women who might arguably be less able to live on their own.

The emerging gulf is instead one of class — what demographers, sociologists and those who study the often depressing statistics about the wedded state call a “marriage gap” between the well-off and the less so.

Statistics show that college educated women are more likely to marry than non-college educated women — although they marry, on average, two years later.

Women with more education also are becoming less likely to divorce, or inclined to divorce, than those with less education. They are even less likely to be widowed all in all, less likely to end up alone.

Two reasons: child support and WalMart.

That's pretty cool! Happiness does not require a mate. In fact, no woman CAN make you happy. Happiness comes from within.

I do enjoy sharing my joy with my soul-mate, but that's a bones -- not a requirement.

Its bogus stats cooked up with sole purpose to give the impression that marriage is on it's way out. Its not. According to the latest census over 70% of women over the age of 30 are, guess what? MARRIED.

Nice post.

Most may not agree but it seems the baby boomer's became the generation of the "whats in it for me, one agenda, feel good" me first cry babies.

The old traditional Democrat party turned into the party of Godless perversion and the Republicans fearing that some leftists reporter might say bad things about them have capitulated right down to the Democrat talking points.

The dried up old feminazis of the 60's and 70's stomped and raged about their freedom.

Well dearies you got your freedom and I hope you enjoying dying alone in some old folks warehouse.

Who can respect a generation that turned their backs on America and the soldiers willing to fight and die so they could dope up, sex up, trash up and denigrate the greatest country on earth.

I ask you who would want to be married to some old feminazi with her screwed up ideas of womanhood.

On the same turn who would want to marry any male willing to compromise his value system just to suit some old dried up, used up feminazi gal.

Just another opinion

Why bother with getting married. As the old saying goes, why would a guy what to buy the cow when he can get the milk for free.

I agree with you.

I was a single parent father of 3 small sons back in the late 1980's. (They are all grown and turned out fine). I know well how the system is stacked against fathers. They are portrayed by the liberal social workers as somehow unfit as parents, but totally capable and liable as financial providers and only as financial providers for their children.

Fatherhood and motherhood share 50% of the responsibility each, but require 100% of the effort and participation in child raising. It is almost like women are being encouraged to be single mothers because they get all the perks of assistance.

Why would any man want to enter into a binding agreement where the woman has all the rights and the man almost always loses everything in the end? That makes no sense, the woman have won the battle of the sexes in US Courts. Enjoy your victory and happy huband hunting.

yup, includes 15 year old girls, women who ARE married but their spouse is in iraq, etc..it also includes older teens who still live at home..yada, yada, yada..

I heard Rush talking about this article yesterday. He provided all the details of the "polling data" that the NYslimes left out, but what do they care for accuracy, as long as if fits their agenda.

Not be me you won't. I have a friend who was raked over the coals by a lefty Judge. He has a divorce decree that specifically states his son is emancipated once he turns 18. Sure, he still has to pay for college etc, but the difference is that the payments no longer go to his ex, they go straight to the college etc. Despite this decree, the Judge has refused to allow him to stop payments and is also requiring him to pay college tuition. The Judge also refused to even grant him a hearing when the law on this matter is clear as clear can be. Now he has to take an appeal and wait a year, all the time continuing to pay for a child who is, well, no longer a child. In effect, if this order stood he would pay child support to his ex forever.

Well, you won't be assailed by me. I only wish I had more than two thumbs to put up. No-fault divorce has been great for half-assed lawyers. Claims of "spousal abuse" which are all-too-often completely fabricated give women the upper hand to take nearly everything, especially the children. I think most of them get some "Lifetime Movie" picture of finding a "new Dad" and creating some bull---"blended family" so the want "old Dad" out of the picture entirely. I have 2 kids who are now teenagers and I have fought and won in my relationships with them - paid my dues to where no one else would ever have been able to "play Dad" with them. But, it's not easily done. I wouldn't get married again for the simple reason that there's too much to be lost - and way too easily.

"Selfishness and self-centeredness."

Also think about the fact that those traits are the fundamental drivers of the high divorce rate. Some of us have lived it and understand it.

Wow, what are the odds of that happening?

No-fault insurance, no fault-divorce, abortion on demand, everything is OK "as long as it doesn't hurt anyone."

Actually, it's more that while women pay an emotional price for a marriage gone wrong, for men it's a financial meltdown.
