Putin abolishes using red flag as military banners.

Posted on 01/19/2007 8:42:30 AM PST by Freelance Warrior

On December 18 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree No 1422 "On Battle Banner of a military unit". This decree ends the service of the Soviet era red banners as battle banners of Russian military units, including those with which Soviet troops won their victories during WWII.

Many military units still have WWII-era banners, often damaged in the heat of battle and carefully repaired afterwards. The old banners are to be kept now in the original military units or to be handed over to museums.

The pattern for the new banners appears as follows:

Front side

Back side

Units of different military branches will have different colour schemes. The Army units will have a straight white cross with black edging on orange cloth. The Navy will have a blue decussate cross on white cloth. Other Russian armed state agencies will have their own colour schemes.

In the centre of the face side there is a round red medallion with the state emblem on it, set off by a golden or silver laurel wreath with a flying ribbon below. In the centre of the back side there is alike red medallion with a unit's emblem.

There are four smaller alike medallions in the ends of the each side of the banner. (8 in total). Emblems of military branches are to be placed there.

This pattern reminds of 1857 Russian Imperial military banners. Pictures of some of them may be found here.

The change has stirred a controversy in the Russian society that's probably why this news isn't in the media there, but the decree is posted on the Russian President's official website.

Ah! The rise of Czarist Russia! I guess we were somewhat wrong when assuming Putin was the new Stalin... He is more like the new Ivan the Terrible...

Big difference. Putin is a chess-player and Ivan the Terrible was somewhat mad.

In the wreaths on the front side will be pictures of Kennedy, Pelosi, Hagel, J. Jackson. On the rear side, all the wreaths will have the democratic party symbol, except one will have McCain.

Apparently Russia is serious about ditching the old USSR. While dangerous, as modern Russia will not be hampered by economic and ideological idiocies of Marxism-Leninism, the lack of those same ideologies mean that the modern USSR is a nation that can be ...worked with.

Note that I said "can be worked with". I don't mean that the Russia should be trusted very far...

No, more like a Romanov. Ivan the Terrible killed a lot of moslems and scared the crap out of them.

It's obvious you have never attended lectures on "scientific communism" like 35+ years old Russians have done. ;) At least those who got a university degree. Otherwise you'd know that Communism is the goal the Communists want to achieve and Socialism is what was in the USSR sine 197x.

But why Rammstein soundtrack? And the video lacks an idea. They use newsreels pertaining to differrent times, many to WWII, nothing to the Civil War in Russia (why?), but not in chronological order.

BTW the warships with an aircarft carrier are US. :)

Well, unlikely. He has never given cause for such idea. Married man, two grown-up daughters.

Only in the case that Russia forms a regiment of US (or former) nationals like Legion etranger in France. Those guys are unknown to general Russian public.

Well then, Russia should have NO PROBLEM that Estonia is dismantaling a Soviet memorial.

Also, this should mean the end of the red star on aircrafts, and a new russian national anthem that doesn't use a Soviet melody.

And, further more, Putin should resign.

He looks like an Ivan the Terrible, too. I'm afraid our President is not a very good judge of character.

and a new russian national anthem that doesn't use a Soviet melody.

So are you going to pick on the Germans for their national anthem that uses a Nazi melody?
