Soldier's funeral to be held today

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

The funeral service for Army Cpl. Chris Mason, 32, of Mobile, who was killed in Iraq on Nov. 28, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Life Church of Mobile, 8701 Zeigler Boulevard in west Mobile.

The service with full military honors will be followed with burial at Pine Crest Cemetery West on Snow Road, officials said.

A 1994 graduate of Baker High School, Mason was a member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C.

The soldier was the son of Garland Mason Jr. and Susie Mason of Mobile. He is survived by a brother, 2nd Lt. Garland Mason III, who is studying at a theological seminary at Jackson, Miss., to become an Army chaplain.

The fallen soldier had the rank of specialist but is being promoted posthumously to corporal by the Army, his brother said. He will be posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart along with other medals, his brother said.

He died of injuries suffered in Bayji, Iraq, during an attack on his unit, the Department of Defense reported.

God Bless you and your family. Chris is a hero.
