Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.
Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.
In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.
(snip)
The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."
Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

"Confirming why I made a good decision when I stopped listening to her."
Amen, Dolphy. I'm going on over a year free of Ingraham and I'm much happier for it. She is nasty and juvenile.
> Rush is a fiscal conservative only. I heard him go off on the religious right, the that "go around preaching from revelation and saying you have to be saved, and say that the world is coming to an end".
With several divorces and substance abuse under his belt, I think "fiscal" is the only conservative card he can still legitimately play. He plays it well, but still.
Rush has gone downhill a lot in the last decade, IMHO. I still listen though-- there's some good nuggets.
Rush needs to grow up.
My son, nephew, and step-niece, who are all there now, will welcome your several relatives, and all of the new troops who stand up for freedom and liberty as they arrive to stem the violence in Iraq. Another nephew of mine will be among those who will be a part of this troop increase. God Bless your relatives, and all the troops fighting around the world as they defend us from those who wish us harm.
We were NEVER LOSING THE WAR.................NOT ONCE!
I have hated the liberal mainstream communist press corp since then....and now that I know old Walter is a liberal geek....lost in his fights to keep windmills out of his vista from his house, lost in sail boating with the Kennedys and other crap.....I HAVE no faith..............NONE............in our press or our enemy, the liberals, who lie willingly to our nation in order to 'get their agenda front and center.
Over two million people died..............TWO MILLION....in South Vietnam and Cambodia after the LIBERALS lied enough to break America's faith in our military and in our mission.
I DISPISE them for it.
During WW II, we lost over 90,000, that is NINETY THOUSAND troops in ONE OF THE BATTLES............... and yet we prevailed....and THIS WAS A WAR in the European theater that we engaged in without even having been directly attacked......we entered it to help our neighbor and to protect our own future....I understand the liberal communists were howling about our intervention back then, too, and that our President at the time, Roosevelt, called upon them to cease and DESIST from encouraging the enemy and discouraging our troops!!!!
It is WAY PAST TIME TO ATTACK THE MAINSTREAM PRESS WITH A VENOM that comes from BEING LIED TO...with a venom that comes from KNOWING that we are not getting the full story!!! WE get to see the death tolls....WE NEVER GET TO SEE THE WONDERS THAT HAVE HAPPENED THERE except here or online elsewhere....and that is SO WRONG and so DAMAGING and SO HITLERESQUE!!!! Falls under propaganda......I DISPISE the katie colics and other mainstream American LIARS!
And I understand that WE have a job to do....to inform our fellow citizens that we are and WILL win.
Thank you. You have quite a family group in service.
They are in the prayers of many and please thank them for their service and sacrifice.
I'm curious, and only curious. What part of Laura Ingram's comments do you take offense at? Did President Bush go far enough in explaining the importance of why we must send more troops into Iraq, and why winning there is so important to this nation's future security? IMHO, he did not, and has not explained well enough to whe whole of this nation. Yes, those of us who understand do not need to hear from the President the why's of this war. But, how many Americans are being manipulated by the drive-by-media's blatent agenda of demonizing this President and this war? In the absence of real leadership and hearing the truth, the Sheople of this country will buy the crap being sold to them by the drive-by-media and the traitorous liberals in Congress. Our President needs to better use his "bully pulpit" to combat the enemies here at home.
Thank you for your prayers. I will pass your thanks along to them.
Masterful job of explaining why we should ignore the drive-by-media when engaged in a war to preserve our Republic.
Did eiither of you hear Greg Kelly on Fox saying that "the President, usually greeted as a rock star, was met with what at best could be called muted applause"? I want to know if this is the truth. I suspect lying, since Kelly is a liberal Rat. They showed no clips of the applause, so I am highly suspicious.
I missed that comment from Kelly. I wouldn't pay attention to what he said anyway.
I forgot to add that the President was speaking at Ft. Benning.
Indeed, you followed the Katrina situation very diligently from start to now, though I haven't always agreed with all of your conclusions (but I do appreciate all your insight and opinions.)
I turned off FOX 7:30am PST to go out so missed that.
Usually catch the last part of Cavuto and listen to John Gibson. Will especially hear what Gibson says, a good guy.
When ever Bush is in San Diego to visit any of the Marine or Naval bases here, over 120,000 active duty military, they are jazzed.
That reminds me of what Larry Lea, a prayer warrior, once wrote: God is the God of falling shorts!
Thanks. Where abouts in Texas?
No, I'm up around Fort Hood.
BIG state
Yep. The drive from Houston or Texarkana to El Paso can flat wear you out, but makes for some great scenery.
