Time to make everyone in SEC country mad at me.
Boise St. 2007 Football Bowl Subdivision National Champions.
Here is some logic for you.
Florida lost to Auburn
Auburn lost to Arkansas
Arkansas lost to USC
USC lost to Oregon State
Oregon State lost to Boise State
Who did Boise State lose to this season? NOBODY !!
Save the argument about strength of schedule and "didn't play nobody". How many SEC teams play non-conference road games? Think any SEC teams would play Boise State (or any other non-BCS team) home and home?
Historically, you're partly right.
Currently, there is no doubt where the SEC stands w.r.t. other conferences. BTW, USC is always a great team and they are the only folks that I would rank on being par with top-ranked SEC team.
The Big 10 is the pampered brat of the sports media and I don't think OSU or Mich. would beat SEC teams like South Carolina or UK consistently.
Given the current state of affairs, the rest of the conferences can fight for the #2 spot. Personally, I think the ACC is better than the Big 12 or the Pac 10 (minus USC).
It'll be interesting to see what happens next year. I don't think the media and the nabobs that run the BCS are too happy about an SEC team winning the NCship/being unbeaten 3 out of the last 4 years. If SEC dominance continues, what's going to happen to favored horses like Notre Dame (barf), OSU, OU, Mich., etc.?
Wisconsin and the rest of the Big 10 are sorta like the NFC East: the deteriorating weather in December dictates that you have to be able to run the ball to have success in the conference. This puts a premium on a hulking O-line & a rugged running game. You have to ask yourself if a Big 10 regular season really prepares its teams for Bowl success.
SEC & Pac-10 teams can essentially play the same offense that they start the season with & continue to hone it to perfection. By the time the Bowls arrive they are usually clicking on all cylinders.
Finally, the Big 10 athletic directors are so insular that they don't seem to think anything outside the conference exists. I haven't seen them do anything to correct the situation. One easy thing would be to schedule more non-conference games later in the season (as a reality check) instead frontloading the schedule with non-conference opponents.
Boise State is the national champion, in my book. I'll never forget their win over Oklahoma. But I bet if you ask me in five years who the powers-that-be gave the ring to, I won't remember, or care.
But Ron Zook could, go figure.
ROFLMBO, nice study hall... perhaps I would of done better in college with one of those too!!!!
As it turns out, unless you are Big10 or Pac10, the best conference in the bowls generally turns out the National Champion als0, save this year with the Big East the SEC was the best BCS conference.
But at least they include the "11" in their logo.
A major problems with that system.
You have the smaller conference teams playing up to three post-season games just to get to the round of eight. Then three more if one of them advanced to the finals. That is 18-19 games total.
One "play-in" game might be feasible. Three rounds of "play-in" is not.
Difficult enough trying to squeeze 16-17 into any schedule. Your system would never work.
Exactly. Case in Point - Alabama. The made $27 Million PROFIT this year. To pay off Mike Shula's Buyout ($4 MIl) they passed the hat among boosters -- the result -- $16 MILLION was donated. so they just made an Additional $12 Million for the school on top of the $27 Million made this season.
That is $39 Million that is going straight back into the entire University, not just the Football program.
For 2007, Alabama football IS ALREADY IN THE BLACK, 8 months before the season even starts, because of Season Ticket sales and endowments. IOW, every single penny made from Concession Sales, merchandise sales, Individual Game ticket sales, parking etc etc etc is CLEAR PROFIT.
Dude, it does not matter what BSU did in 2005, now does it? Really?
Oh yeah, Sept. 3, 2005. Georgia beat Boise 48-13. Georgia could have hung 70 on them if they played their starters after the first half.
No way Boise could survive an SEC conference schedule.
Football polls are like political polls. The polling orgainzation can get whatever results it wants. To have second-tier teams like Michigan and Ohio State at or near the top all season proves it.
Oh, and another thing. It's time for all of those "the SEC plays creampuffs for out-of-conference opponents" jerks to shut the hell up. Look who they have to play INSIDE THE CONFERENCE.
Exactly. Georgia (Ga Tech), Florida (FSU), and South Carolina (Clemson) all end every season against Non-Conference, and Usually top 25 ranked, opponents.
Why? It's fun. It provides a way of keeping alumni in touch with the University and introduces children to the University. It gives hundreds of students from each school (by the time you look at the entire support structure) a chance to travel all over the country and interact with people who have similar interests but who are from different cultures within our country. It gives college kids a chance to learn to work in large team environments in very public, high pressure environments. It teaches college kids how to act in a poised manner no matter the circumstances, but it's their job to try to keep the fans into what's going on. You may personally feel physically exhausted or may be disgusted with what's going on in the game, but you have to at least act upbeat because that's your job.
NFL or NBA or not, all of this is great prep for the professional world. I'm saying this from firsthand experience in a support organization...being a lower middle class kid, being part of the Razorback organization gave me experiences opportunities I would have never had otherwise that prepared me for the real world and I got to feel like I was earning my keep by playing my role to be there. And no, the high school version of what I did wasn't REMOTELY the same.
I agree with you that there should be no more than 6-8 bowl games. If BSU wants to play with the big boys, let them join a more competitive league.
Boise would be one of the teams added and the other would be either Hawaii, Fresno, or San Jose.
Quite an accomplishment for Boise if that happens considering they have only been in Div 1A for a little over 10 years.
I agree -- why lets just take it one step furthur and not even keep score in the games. That way no one ever has to have the Stigma of being the loser.
As to Urban, you may not like him but the truth is most at UF don't either. They are happy he won but fully expect him to move on quickly as he has already shown the proclivity to do. He has no ties to UF and is not "family". Spurrier's mistake was trying his shtick in the NFL. Having been a winner as a player and coach at UF he could have stuck around at UF as long as Bobby Bowden has at FSU and been well paid to coach until senile.
