Anyone watching CNN? Randy Knapp (the climber who survived on Mt. Hood for 17 days) was telling Larry King that the good news is we know that because of Jesus Christ we have hope even for the deceased climber.
This was met be dead silence, and a quick change of subject by King.

Well, the next time any of you are involved with something that I find idiotic, I will remember your attitude against your fellow man. Something idiotic like driving to pick up groceries?

They have done that to him several times tonight, in all of his interviews. Fox & CNN. Greta couldn't speak for a moment after he spoke about his faith.

Hey, you chose to live too far from the grocery store or learn to make your own food. Too bad.

I'm suggesting that the expectations should be clear. If there are cases where we're simply not going to attempt a rescue, then we should set it out.
IN BOLD TYPEOtherwise, I think we all assume that if we're in known trouble, people will try to come to our assistance.

Good on him to keep making the point about having faith in Christ, though.

Some of his last coherent thoughts were probably..... Oh, grand knower of all that is probable.....maybe it's time to flush that crystal ball of yours. Life is LIVING. Death comes to us all, sometimes when we least expect it. This is usually followed by pain and sorrow to those left behind. Joy, fulfillment and exhilaration also happen in a life lived in search of these things.
Best not to ride a bus, or drive a car, or travel by air. Your last coherent thoughts would probably be......"I should have stayed in bed."

Larry King is an idiot. He's never even been on the internet and doesn't have any desire to ever be online for anything. No wonder he peaked in the 80s.

Also, some of the reports said that this kind of excursion is seen by mountaineers as a deliberate attempt to hone extreme alpine climbing skills. Often for an attempt at much harder climbs.
So, basically, they rolled the dice. And they KNEW they were rolling the dice.
Snake eyes.
Sad, but true.

True enough on the clear expectations. But, we spend more money rescuing people in the winter or summer in inner cities than we do on these operations.
Although I hate that people are hurting, I find these rescue operations amazing. We can pinpoint where someone is by the use of a cell phone to within a few feet. We now have helicopters that can hover at these high elevations. And we are learning more and more as a result.
There are things that I hate that we spend taxpayer money on, this is not one of them.

Why is it MY responsibility when they take on this risk?
Responsibility might now be the right word. But we do it because that is what our consciences have us do. And we are better people because of it.
Years ago in Texas there was baby Jessica that fell in a well. People all over the world were glued to their televisions, hoping and praying for her. All types of equipment was brought in at an enormous expense. Huge donations were given. America didn't have to do that. We don't have to help the countless number of people and animals I might add that get themselves in dangerous situations every year sometimes by their own foolishness sometimes not. But we do, and we will keep on I hope, it will bring us together for a common cause and make us better people and remind us of what is important. It may take a little of our tax money, but that tax money will be there when we or someone we love gets in to a similar situation by accident or foolishness.

My younger sister has ridden horses for the past decade or so. That whole sport is full of arrogant, self-centered elitists. They think it's all about them, even though the horse is doing all the real work.
If I get lost while mountain climbing, send me the bill. If it's in the five or six figures, then I'll pay it off incrementally.
Nothing wrong with taking big risks, or bigger risks than the average person, but one also should EXPECT [and not be shocked] when trouble comes along.

Larry King has on a pastor of one of the climbers. Haven't caught it all. Maybe it is their love of God that drives these men to do this. To see His creation, enjoy it all.

I took your post as sarcasm -- it was funny (the part about them not discovering a body until March). Somebody thought you were serious about that?

This is for the guy that started the negative posts and for those answering him:Can we please move on and keep the topic focused on the climbers -- on hopefully finding the last two alive -- and not on snarking back and forth about risks and grocery shopping and trivial stuff?????
I am wondering if maybe the two climbers who left the other climber in the cave left that Y with the ropes days ago? Also, he never said that he was injured in the phone call did he? Just that he was "Cold, wet and tired." I think that he is the one they found...if so at least he did get to say some kind of a goodbye to his wife and kids with that phone call :(

I'm not sure how much has been spent on this rescue attempt or whether we'll ever know an exact figure. Do you include the volunteer's time or not, or their medical bills for frostbite?
I think it was dumb to attempt the climb in December, but that's pretty darn easy for me to say in hindsight. My guess is that millions will be spent ultimately to recover three men who died. I hope very much that I'm wrong.
