Muslim-only swimming session irks London club members
By Indo Asian News Service
London, Dec 10 (IANS) A row has sparked off over special Muslim-only swimming sessions at a popular public pool in Croydon during which bathers are required to be covered from head to toe with their swimming costume.
Non-Muslims may swim during the sessions, but only if they follow the strict dress code.
Women are banned from attending but have their own special swimming sessions outside opening hours.
The angry club members have vowed to hand over their memberships back to Thornley Heath leisure centre, according to Daily Mail newspaper.
'To make a special provision for them (Muslims) is just ridiculous and strikes me as imposing a 'Us and them' mentality which is wrong,' one member, Alex Craig said.
The centre is extremely popular locally as it is the only swimming pool offering cheap sessions for miles around.
'I turned up and saw a sign saying it was closing early for Muslim afternoon - I couldn't believe it,' said Daniel Foley.
'Muslims are not allowed to show intimate parts of their body. This is non-negotiable. Muslims have as much right to go swimming as anyone else,' a spokesman for the leisure centre said.
A local mosque has however defended the introduction of Muslim-only swimming sessions at the pool.

Then they should go back to the 'cultured' dogpiles they come from and stop demanding that we change our cultures to fit them!
I'm getting SOOOOOOOOOOO tired of this!
Thankfully I live in the states. It's coming I'm sure, but not near as quick as it is to Europe.
They're setting the precedent. First these kind of things, then like Canada "family Sharia courts" then, full Sharia courts.
The thin edge of the wedge.
Churchill would be spinning in his grave if he saw how modern day England is bending over for the Jihadists left and right.
Build their own pool in Muzzieland.
I have two questions.
The first - did they pay for the weekly session?
If so, then that is little different to what families do, albeit on a less regular basis, for children's parties, schools do for swimming lessons, and crazy cults do to allow their members swimming time.
The second - is this a private club or a council run swimming baths?
If the former, then they can do what they like, especially if they have been paid for the pool time - that's a free market.
If the latter, and no payment has been made then it is a severe problem. If fringe groups are accomodated (and I do not think that they ought to be) then that accomodation should not take place in the middle of the day and interfere with other peoples use of the facility- particularly normal mothers and children who liketo use the pool at that time.
My advice directly before the session - pee in the pool, munch bacon sarnies nearby, leave skimpy underwear in the changing rooms and ostentatiouly read a large bible in the entrance hall.
This makes it sound like it's not really a public (state-run) pool, but a private pool open to the public through membership. In that case, the owner has every right to do this, and of course the non-Muslim members have every right to cancel their memberships in response. The owner had better hope there are a LOT of swimming Muslims in the area, or he's going broke.
Oh my, you can see her feet! What kind of abomination is this? Off with her head!
I'm sure nobody was forcing them to do that during the ordinary public swimming sessions.
Works for me.
Where's Papa Smurf?
These are the spots where the visiting Arab and other ethnic Muslim princes and wealthy nabobs visit when they visit London for sexual and alcoholic fun and games.
I'll bet some of the local women-hating mosque imams frequent these haunts also, dressed in mufti.
That's civvies for those of you in Rio Linda.
Leni
Then why doesn't the Mosque build a swimming pool for its attendees? That way, there won't be any difficulty at all!
There's nothing wrong w/ Naboo. I don't know what you're talking about. LOL!
Beautiful architecture and scenery
Brave pilots (including a 9 year old smart aleck)
