'Muslim only' pool outrage

A COUNCIL has sparked fury by virtually shutting a swimming pool on Sunday afternoons for “Muslim-only” sessions.

All women are banned — and non-Muslim men may swim IF they follow the strict Islamic dress code of swim shorts that hide the navel and extend below the knee.

Croydon Council in South London runs the sessions at Thornton Heath leisure centre between 4.45pm and 6.45pm.

Similar slots are laid on for Muslim women outside opening hours, where bathers must be covered from the neck down to the ankle.

Locals who flock to the area’s only major leisure centre each week are furious. Member Daniel Foley, 44, said: “I turned up and saw a sign saying it was closing early for Muslim afternoon — I couldn’t believe it.”

Nearby Croydon Mosque defended the move. It said: “Muslims are not allowed to show off intimate parts of their body. This is non-negotiable. Muslims have as much right to go swimming as anyone else.”

Croydon Council said: “We are keen to ensure sports facilities are there for everyone.”

Arcadia man arrested in MU library after scuffle with MU police

An Arcadia man was arrested Monday inside MU’s Ellis Library after he assaulted an MU police officer who was escorting him out of the library at the request of library security, police said.

MU police restrained 42-year-old Paul Allaire and carried him out of the library at 1020 Lowry St., and out to the corner of Ninth and Conley streets, where parked police cars had drawn a crowd of MU students at midday.

Jack Baumann, an MU student who was standing outside the library, said the man screamed “democracy and progress” as he was being carried out.

Maj. Doug Schwandt, assistant chief of the MU police, said that Allaire had a previous history with Ellis Library security. He has been asked to leave the library before, after security guards found him in the library after it was closed. Schwandt said he did not know whether Allaire is homeless.

MU police were called by library security to issue a trespass warning to Allaire, who refused to leave the library when asked. Initially, two police officers were dispatched, but after a scuffle that resulted in an assault on an officer, six more officers arrived.

After being asked to leave the library, Allaire turned and “lunged at the library security guard” and in the process kicked an officer, Schwandt said.

Allaire was served a trespass warning and will be charged with resisting arrest, threatening to assault a library security guard and assaulting an MU police officer, Schwandt said. He faces up to a year in the county jail and fines up to $1,000 for each charge.

According to Missouri Case.net, Allaire pleaded guilty to two assault charges in 2005.

U.S. Consulate Jeddah distributed the following Warden Message on December 7, 2006:

At approximately 8 p.m. on December 7, we were informed that police fired on a vehicle on the street facing the U.S. Consulate in Jeddah. At present we do not know if there are any injured parties. We will advise in a subsequent warden message if there are any indications that this was an attempted attack on the U.S. Consulate. There were no injuries to Consulate personnel or damage to the Consulate as a result of this incident.

Earlier in the day, a sniper fired on Saudi police at a jail in the Al-Ruais district of Jeddah, several miles from the Consulate grounds. Saudi officials have confirmed that two persons died in the attack. Police are still searching for individuals believed to be involved in this attack. We do not yet know if these two incidents are related.

In light of these events, post wishes to encourage U.S. citizens to follow appropriate personal security practices, in line with the information below in the materials below.

American citizens in Saudi Arabia are advised to review the following Department of State travel information:

Update:

Big Boom In New Jersey Was Not Earthquake (12/7/06

NBC 10 has received many e-mails and calls from people in Atlantic County about a big boom.

Many people thought it might be an earthquake, and the U.S. Geological Survey also received numerous phone calls.

Ocean City police told NBC 10 the Navy is doing gunnery practice from ships off the coast.

Well...okey dokey... BTW this is the only update that is stating this as the cause. Other news was saying that military had no known operations in the area. Still waiting to see if someone blames some sore of underwater methane gas release. IIRC there have been these mysterious booms reported on TM before in VA, coastal areas in SC, and FL.

I've looked at some of the nearby seismograph stations, there's nothing that is recorded at those time frames. Another one of those mysteries (aurora on a mission).
