:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

Saudi Arabia Frees 18 Ex-Gitmo Detainees
ap ^ | Dec 26, 2006

Posted on 12/26/2006 12:50:54 PM PST by Mount Athos

The Saudi government said Tuesday it had released 18 men who were detained after returning to their homeland from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay.

The Saudis, who returned to the kingdom in May and June, were released after they finished their sentences, Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Mansour al-Turki said. His comments, which did not specify the men's alleged crimes, came in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Last week the kingdom freed 11 ex-detainees from Guantanamo who had completed short sentences after their return.

The United States says its military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, holds terror suspects usually people captured in Afghanistan, Pakistan or other hotspots of the war on terror.

Saudi officials have said former Guantanamo inmates are taken into custody on their return to investigate whether they have any connections to Islamic militant groups.

So far, 53 Saudis have been released from Guantanamo all this year. Another 75 Saudis remain at the prison in Cuba, according to Kateb al-Shimri, a lawyer who represents relatives of Saudis held at the U.S. base.

"I lost brothers and sisters, yet I do not hate one single Muslim, I do not hate one single Indonesian"

The message of Jose Ramos-Horta encapsulates the superiority of a civilization, and a spiritual energy that can overcome that of the Islamic rage for revenge, if the West only has the courage to recapture and defend it.

This will be a considerable preoccupation of my next book, tentatively entitled Why Christianity Is A Religion of Peace -- And Islam Isn't (coming next summer from Regnery Publishing), which will confront and refute the multiculturalist assumption that all religions and cultures are equal, explore Judeo-Christian civilization as the focus of the global jihad attack, and explain why it is so eminently worth defending -- by Christians and non-Christians alike.

This doesn't mean that it is likely that Osama will heed this message and lay down his arms. Nor does he mean that non-Muslims shouldn't defend themselves against the jihadists. But it does bespeak a civilization of mercy and magnanimity, which is greater than that of the civilization of hatred and barbarism, and should be defended as such.

"Timor PM sends Xmas message to bin Laden," from AFP, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

DILI - East Timor Prime Minister Jose Ramos-Horta said Tuesday he hoped Osama bin Laden had tuned in from his mountain hideout to hear his Christmas message of peace directed at the feared terrorist leader.
Ramos-Horta’s message to the elusive September 11 mastermind was broadcast on the BBC.

“It occurred to me that a man who is one of the most feared and detested on earth by some and admired by others, might tune into the BBC and hear my message,” he said....

“I have no illusions that my message will achieve any change, but I thought that here I had a chance that Osama bin Laden would listen and maybe, just maybe, my message would touch his conscience,” he said in explanation of his choice of recipient....

“On this occasion when we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, my words, words of peace, are sent to my brother somewhere in the mountains, in the caves, of Afghanistan and Pakistan, Osama bin Laden. Yes, I consider you to be a brother,” he said.

Ramos-Horta said he failed to understand why bin Laden directed his resentment over the harm done to Muslims against innocent civilians.

“I come from a small country, East Timor, that was invaded by the largest Muslim country in the world.

“I lost brothers and sisters, yet I do not hate one single Muslim, I do not hate one single Indonesian. That’s the only difference between you and me, my brother Osama bin Laden,” he said.

“I beg you to re-think and extend your love, your solidarity, your friendship, the same ones you feel about Palestinians, extend to the rest of the world, extend to Europeans, to Christians. You will then win them over that way, more than through hatred and violence. I thank you, may God Almighty and Merciful bless us all.”

The Nobel Peace laureate said he hoped his words got through.

“I can only hope and pray that Osama bin Laden heard my message and accepted it in a spirit of peace,” he said.

Took them long enough to figure this out didn't it? Jayna Davis has been saying this for a long time but the powers that be wouldn't give her the time of day. *sigh*.

Up to 500 killed in Lagos fuel blast
Reuters ^ | 26 Dec 06 | staff

Posted on 12/26/2006 10:31:49 AM PST by saganite

LAGOS (Reuters) - Up to 500 people were burned alive on Tuesday when fuel from a vandalized pipeline exploded in Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, emergency workers said.

Hundreds of residents of the Abule Egba district went to scoop fuel using plastic containers after thieves punctured the underground pipeline overnight to siphon fuel into a road tanker, locals said.

Abiodun Orebiyi, secretary-general of the Nigerian Red Cross, said there was no official death toll but estimated that between 200 and 500 people could have been killed.

"We know it is over 200 (dead). We are talking hundreds. We don't know if it is 300, 400 or 500," he said, adding that 60 people had been evacuated to hospital with serious burns.

This Reuters witness saw the remains of hundreds of bodies, most burned beyond recognition, lying at the scene of the explosion as emergency workers tried to put out the fire.

Some corpses lay rigid on the ground -- arms and legs in the air as if still trying to escape -- their clothes and skin burned off by the blast.

"A lot of people have been roasted. They are littered on the ground," a rescue worker said.

>>Another useless "panel". <<

Much easier to sit around and talk about problems than to take the initiative and FIX them. The powers that be don't have the will or the stomach to deal with what lies before us. Too easy to sit in their ivory towers where it's safe and 'talk'. They will keep talking until it is too uncomfortable for them to do so any longer. By then the conflagration will have consumed most of us.

Until we see 100,000+ dead, on American soil, don't expect anything to change. Sorry to be so pessimistic.

"Accused Russian Spy Deported From Canada

Dec 26th - 6:55pm

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MONTREAL (AP) - A man accused by authorities of being a Russian spy while masquerading as a Canadian citizen was deported to his homeland Tuesday, officials said.

Canada's Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said the man, who went by the name Paul William Hampel in Canada, left the country under close supervision on Tuesday morning.

The Canada Border Services Agency took Hampel into custody on Nov. 14 after finding he was carrying a fraudulent Ontario birth certificate.

According to documents filed in Federal Court in Montreal, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service believes Hampel is a member of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, or SVR, a successor to the Soviet-era KGB. Officials had asked for his immediate deportation, saying he was suspected of acts of espionage. There were no immediate details on those alleged acts.

The man acknowledged to he was a Russian citizen in Federal Court earlier this month. The court agreed to protect his real identity me after he said he feared for the safety of his family and himself.

Calls to the Russian Embassy in Ottawa were not immediately returned Tuesday night.

Despite his department's allegations the man was spying for Russia, Day rejected the suggestion that the case may harm relations between the two countries.

"We understand that these things go on in the world, the Russians understand that also," Day said. "This will not hurt relations between the two countries."

O,
we now have a muslim in congress, and quite vocal from what I'm seeing. Our foes have made great strides in the last few years.

Folks, we are losing the the war. We've lost the will to do what is necessary for our own survival. Rest In Peace America.

Prepare yourselves folks. It's going to get ugly.

Lots of folks compare our situation to the situation just before WWII. I'd have to agree. The first people to die any ANY war are civilians. Food for thought.

ALL enemies - foreign and domestic....
