Gingrich Sees Dark Days Ahead for GOP
Human Events ^ | 12/1/6 | Robert B. Bluey

Posted on 12/01/2006 7:40:42 AM PST by ZGuy

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich last night offered a grim outlook for the final two years of the Bush Administration, saying at best it would resemble President Gerald Ford’s administration and at worst President Jimmy Carter’s.

Gingrich spoke at a private fundraiser for the Virginia Conservative Action PAC. The event, hosted at the home of Shirley & Banister Public Affairs President Craig Shirley, attracted dozens of conservatives to hear Gingrich’s message.

Despite a clamoring among conservatives for Gingrich to run for president in 2008, he offered no indication he would do so. Recently, Gingrich has said he would make a decision in September 2007. He echoed those sentiments last night.

Gingrich’s remarks were wide-ranging, touching on America’s healthcare system, the bloated federal budget and a history lesson about George Washington’s Mount Vernon home—just miles from the site of the fundraiser.

He reserved his harshest remarks for the Bush Administration and Republicans in Washington, D.C. Gingrich called the consultant community “stupid” and said the GOP has wasted money on campaign ads. He said, “2004 was pathetic, and 2006 was worse.”

Gingrich said Republicans—and especially White House adviser Karl Rove—need to recognize why they lost control of Congress. He said Rove should leave his job if he doesn’t get it.

On Iraq, Gingrich said the U.S. won the first campaign there—toppling Saddam Hussein—but has failed in the second, ongoing campaign. He said he opposes the current plan of action in Iraq, and called on the U.S. to launch a new, broader third campaign. In the past, Gingrich has suggested a preemptive invasion of Iran to thwart that country’s development of a nuclear weapon.

He said the American people are more courageous than the Bush Administration realizes—and when called upon to act, they will respond accordingly. “Show them Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speeches,” Gingrich implored.

What advice would Gingrich offer Bush and Republicans? He named three bold moves he would take: Abolish the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, make English the official U.S. language, and praise US Airways, in the form of a congressional resolution, for its tough stand against six Muslim imams who behaved like terrorists on a recent flight.

He cited the “fiasco” in New Orleans as another embarrassment for the Bush Administration, which has relied on government to fix the city’s problems rather than private enterprise. “If there was no FEMA, New Orleans would have recovered faster.”

The fundraiser was organized on behalf of VCAP by Erin DeLullo, who most recently worked on Ken Blackwell’s campaign for governor of Ohio. Notable conservatives in attendance included former U.S. Rep. Bob Livingston, Media Research Center President Brent Bozell, public-relations consultants Diana Banister and Christian Josi, Townhall.com General Manager Chuck DeFeo, and American Spectator contributor Quin Hillyer. Virginia Delegate Chris Saxman and Corey Stewart, the newly elected chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, were also in attendance.

Its because about 1/1000 of the electorate voted for the Dems over the Republicans in several close races.

Craig Shirley's book on Reagan's 76 campaign is excellent and required reading for all conservatives.

It should be on the RINO'sbanned book list, however.

It is also a timely book, as we are basically where we were in 1974. The problem is, there is no Reagan on the horizon to sweep out Hillary in 2012.

(Or even Jimmy...he's eligible for a second term, after all....Incidentally, Gerald Ford is also eligible. Hell, why don't we just nominate him in 08? I'd vote for him over McCain.)

President Bush could fall off his bike, go into a coma and be unconcious for the rest of his term... and it would still be head and shoulders better than Carters's.

Can't happen

More like Can Happen but wont.

Speaking of Newt's opportunism, is he still all cozy with the Hildebeast on the issue of universal health care and medical history cards for all Americans? There were some threads here last year pointing to a personal financial interest Newt seems to have in the production of medical history cards.

... OK., so, I am forced to admit that these are good ideas ...

Newt is sure trying very hard to make himself relevant again.
I doubt if it'll work,

$13 billion in 1947 dollars, so that Europe could buy goods to get moving again.

You can read about it here on the State department's site:

The Marshall Plan

Newt wasn't advocating sending federally funded heavy equipment. He was advocating economic aid.

Yep, dark days are coming, but I am the guiding light. If you screw around on your first wife, maybe you just made a mistake. When you screw around on your second wife, you have the character of bj and can't be trusted to be the President. Sorry newt, keep your day job of being the white-haired talking head.

I haven't even brought that up. I am beginning to think he will say anything or ally himself with anyone who will get him TV face time.

Well Bush sort of followed his suggestion. New Orleans is a basket case still. Mississippi on the other hand, is apparently doing fine.

If the President follows the Baker commission's proposals (at least as reported so far) his approval rating will fall down into the teens-the hawks will desert him en masse and deservedly so. It will be a disaster for the Republican party from which it will take years to recover. The Dems will use the war as a cudgel to beat up Republicans and the media will help (both are already doing so now, but it will get worse). Right now it looks pretty bleak.

"Pretty clear, here, that Newtster is seeking to "talk down" any success Bush might have in the last two years "

What part of "Bush blew the 2006 election" do you not understand? Bush and Rove are where the buck stops.

If Newt would stick to those ideas and can overcome his negatives...(and tone down the foot-in-mouth syndrome a bit) he could run in '08 and I'd support him.

Newt could not say NO to Bill Clinton. Clinton could call him to the white house and Newt would end up doing exactly what Clinton wanted done.

On top of that Newt was a son whose father deserted him and his step father abused both Newt and his mother. That makes him a mental twin to Bill Clinton except Clinton only lies to others. Newt only lies to himself. Newt will never as long as he lives be able to stop trying to have sex with nearly every female he meets.

Newt is not nearly as bright as Bill Clinton. Clinton married a woman who was quite willing to allow him to cheat on her. Newt marries women who expect him to be true. They go ballistic when he is not. Clinton admits to himself that he has the problem and took steps to minimize the damage he causes himself. His primary step was to marry Hillary who knew exactly what Clinton's problem was before she married Bill. Newt tells himself he does not have a problem and always promises to be true to females in his live. When caught he promises others and himself that he will not do it again. Of course Newt does do it again and he gets caught.

Newt would have sex with more subordinate employees and get caught more often than Bill Clinton ever did. And it is almost certain the House would impeach and the Senate convict Newt. Only Democrats defend immoral cheaters.

Most likely the House would impeach and the Senate convict Newt's Vice president then impeach and convict Newt. Newt has a history of selecting people who have the same problems as he does. For example Newt's number 2 in the House was Congressman Livingston who also could not keep his pants zippered. Livingston was forced to resign the day he was selected to be Newt's successor as Speaker of the house.

A Vote for Newt is a vote to make Nancy Pelosi President.

Agreed. Newt may be something of an opportunist in the timing, but he's still right.
