NET senior editor James Kim and his family are missing.
The 36-year-old Kim, his wife Kati, and daughters Penelope (4 years) and Sabine (7 months) left their home in San Francisco last week on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They were last seen on Saturday, November 25, in Seattle, according to the San Francisco Police Department, which has opened a missing persons' investigation. They were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of "DOESF."
Those with information about the Kim family's whereabouts are asked to contact the SFPD immediately--at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and at 415-553-1071 after-hours. The Portland Police Department can be reached at 503-823-4000.
Prayers continuing for James, of course. Got carried away with the good news.
Thank you for the update.
Such a beautiful family I pray for his safety and that the wife and children are okay.
Let's pray for the best outcome!<<<<<
I can only think that the massive number of people praying for this family helped so far, and we'll keep praying for Dad. Of course I hope that Mom and the kids check out OK at the hospital, what an ordeal. I haven't been able to hear anything at the Grant's Pass police scanner site, we probably crashed the feed, as usual.
I am hoping and praying they find him.
I live, own, and operate a ranch near this area. One: You don't drive over that road in the winter unless you are absolutely positive the road is cleared and inclement weather is not imminent. The snow can come very quickly and can make driving impossible in less than an hour. And if you're all the way to Eden Valley, you won't be able to walk out.
The road is paved, narrow, no guard rails, road markings, and at night, dark as the back side of the moon. Maps all show it for a nice ride. Maps are flat, this road changes elevation several times in thousands of feet. And last, no cell towers. Its 85 miles of desolate, towering forest, no lights, habitations, nothing and in the winter, will kill you quick...
Continue to Pray for the Mom and Kids also. Frost bite is common in these situation. Some people run the engine and the snow plugs the exhaust and causes carbon monoxide to fill the car. They will have a hellofa story to tell if James is found alive. It sounds like they did everything right for almost 6 days after getting lost...

"did everything right..." If you are referring up to the point that James left to go for help you should really look at the history especially in this area. If James were familar with three well documented cases of lost families in this area...the three were rescused because someone left to go get help. It is a judgement call - I think any sane human being would be ready to look for help after 6 days and nothing. In addition the family was found by a chartered helicopter from the family - NOT law-enforcement.
If I were sitting there with my family and after six days and I had snowshoes...you better believe I would be on the trail out of there too to help my family.
Choice is simple
Good lesson here to...the family needs to be proactive and do something to find their loved ones. A lot of times the authorities tell the family to sit tight and wait. No way do what the Kim relatives did and use every single resource you have to find your missing family members.
Her son told her there was snow on nfs #1 just north of 36 on the previous Sunday. They got as far a Ruth Lake and had to turn around in a blinding snow storm and drive south on 101 to hwy 20 to Chico. Just like you said, these roads are a thrill in summer and fall but...
I found the station...

The news conference is right on their main page.
At the press conference, the officer said they had only been conducting the search during the day -- not at night. Is that typical? No wonder it's taken them 9 days to find them. And they're not bringing the dogs in until tomorrow. That could mean the difference between life and death.
They will search now 24/7 since they have definite information and a path to follow. Until now (and Cingular using triagulation to focus the search) the area was too large to mount an effective 24/7 search. As it is right now they only have two forest rangers tracking James.
This site should have news as it happens in regard to this situation:

The weather here in Humboldt county Ca has been clear and cold since about last Wed. I suspect the weather there is about the same since the search area is about 200 miles north of us
Wow. Very graphic, scary description. I was up there once on one of the roads in that area (during the summer, even) and I recall that it was one of the darkest and most remote feeling places I had ever seen in my life. And climbs in elevation and no guard rails - that's something they don't tell you on the maps, as you point out.
People have no idea how bad it can be up there. On the other side of I-5 we have Crater Lake. Most people don't know that the AVERAGE snowfall up there is over 550 inches of snow and there have been years when the road around the crater has never opened in the summer due to snow. and people want to take a short cut to the coast? sorry, not this guy...been there and done it all..
not a problem, sir....I've been busy. FWIW, I would no more drive that road during the winter than drive off a cliff on purpose....
Here is some information I haven't seen before... AP Story from the Mercury News
