Steele is too much of a risk. He was not able to swing black voters and may alienate some white. That is the reason in my opinion he isn't heading the RNC. Santorum lost by 12 points and can be tied to W more than his brother Jeb.

Just to put paid to the "Mitt Romney" rumors, he's toast.
Governor Mitt Romney signed Massachusetts' 2002 Assault Weapons Ban.
He also campaigned on a platform of not changing a single pro-abortion law.
Oh, and for all of you born after the 2002 Olympics (or out of the country, or just not paying attention), Mitt Romney got Salt Lake City busted for **BRIBING** the International Olympic Committee.
You see, Govenor Romney chaired SLC's Olympics.
Any questions?!

Is there any reason a candidate shouldn't be able to say the following:
- It has become apparent over the last few years that allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves is an effective deterrent to crime, and has not caused any problems of its own. Efforts at stricter "gun control" will merely benefit criminals. [no need to mention that this was HCI et al. knew this all along].
- Recent advances with adult stem-cell research show such great promise, and adult stem cells have such enormous advantages over embryonic ones, including the possibility of autologous transplants, that even if moral factors weren't an issue, embryonic research would be a waste of money.
- That the country has allowed infanticide in the past is no reason that it must continue to allow it in the future. Even though abortion of a 40-week fetus is nothing less than infanticide, what's done is done. To forbid the practice in future would not damn those who have engaged in it in the past. To the contrary, only by forbidding it in future can those who engaged it in the past really get right with themselves [and with God, though the latter need not be mentioned].
- This country needs immigrants, but there is no reason why those who cheat the system should be treated better than those who play by the rules.
Should any of those points really be controversial, if presented as suggested?

I like JEB, but there HAS to be more than one or two people to run for President other than a Bush. It just won't fly.

Jeb Bush is a great guy. The best of the Bush family in office -- but no chance of election -- at least not for 12 or so years. I don't doubt that Jeb Bush is a good person, but when faced with a crisis (Terri Schiavo) he got caught bluffing. That doesn't make him a bad human being, nor would it disqualify him from legislative offices, but IMHO it would signal a dangerous weakness in a President.

When the current president leaves office in 2009 there will have been a Bush in the Oval Office or the vice president's office for all but eight of the past 28 years.

Beginning in 1952, in every presidential campaign except one, the Republican ticket has included a Bush, a Dole, or a Nixon.
To: supercat
I didn't say Republican ticket (in my post #4), I said Presidential ticket:
'80: Reagan / Bush
'84: Reagan / Bush
'88: Bush / Quayle
'92: Clinton / Gore
'96: Clinton / Gore
'00: Bush / Cheney
'04: Bush / Cheney
A Bush or a Clinton on every ticket since 1980.

Oh, and for all of you born after the 2002 Olympics (or out of the country, or just not paying attention), Mitt Romney got Salt Lake City busted for **BRIBING** the International Olympic Committee. Link? My understanding was that he took over with the organizing committee in shambles (the bribery had already taken place), and brought the SLC Olympics out of this crisis, turing it into a huge success.
