Mitt Romney-Jeb Bush for GOP Ticket in 2008?
News Max ^

Posted on 11/15/2006 9:25:46 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has hired several of Jeb Bush’s top aides, leading to speculation that Romney may be courting the outgoing Florida governor for a possible Romney-Bush 2008 ticket for the White House.

After Bush’s former chief of staff and top political adviser, Sally Bradshaw, joined Romney’s Commonwealth political action committee earlier this month, Romney flew to Florida to join Bush for campaign events and fund-raisers - and to gauge Bush’s interest in being a running mate, sources told the Boston Herald.

Soon after, Bush’s chief finance director, Ann Woods Herberger, also joined Romney’s political action committee.

Bush has ruled out running for president himself. But agreeing to accept the vice presidential post would allow him to "run on the national ticket without having to run for the ticket,” since vice presidential candidates are chosen, not elected, political analyst David Mark, a former political reporter who covered Gov. Bush, told the Herald.

Politics doesn't work that way. You're spouting idealisms. But "explaining" your past won't win elections.

You couldn't convince 20 random people in a supermarket that Nixon had no motive to bug the Watergate hotel.

Likewise, you won't be able to get past the news media's blasting of Romney for his SLC Olympic bribery scandal. A campaign manager would have to spend the entire campaign on the defensive, "explaining" why Romney was the good guy...and fewer than 15% would pay enough attention to even understand...with fewer still being swayed by your pleas and "explanations."

Well, after the dems, repeal the patriot act, cease wire tapping terrorists, parade the administration through the house with impeachment charges, and because of all this we are attacked again....

If we are still alive after all this, we can run

Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck and win in 08'

That would be a great ticket, you are right. I can't think of another ticket that would be better or even as good!

He won the governorship of Massachusetts largely on the strength of his SLC Olympic record. It might not have the same impact several six years later, but it would be impossible for his opponent, the media, or anyone else to turn such a strong positive around into a negative.

What do you have against Romney?

He's going to wait till '12 or '16 before dipping his foot in that water.

More like '16 or '20 or even'24. I don't think 2012 is far enough into the future. It's only four years after W leaves office. If Hillary gets elected in 2008, people will be ready for another Bush in 2016. If Jeb were elected in 2016 and served two terms, he would be out of office in 2025. Fortunately Chelsea Clinton would not be eligible to become President, because her birthday was on February 29, 1980, and she would be just 40 days shy of the minimum age of 35.

No, I understood. If others step up and prove themselves, great. Jeb is proven already.

"What do you have against Romney?"

Everything. First of all, the Democrats have more popular people in the NorthEast, Romney's chief base of support. Losing the NorthEast is a given in any Presidential campaign right now...Romney would just make a better showing there than other Pubbies (but in a winner-takes all Electoral campaign, that's not worth spit).

To win the White House, the GOP has to win the areas in which the GOP has strength. This means that the GOP needs to win at least 30 of the 32 Red States. Do that and the GOP wins in 2008.

Blue states don't count. Dems can win California and New York and yet still lose the White House every time.

So from a strategic perspective, the GOP needs strong Red State candidates. That rules out Romney.

Second, Romney is a gun grabber. He signed Massachusetts' 2002 Assault Weapons Ban. That alone will cost him the GOP primaries.

Third, Romney campaigned on a platform of not changing any pro-abortion law already in place. That's not a good way to win a GOP White House nomination.

Fourth, Romney is up to his neck in the 2002 SLC Olympic bribery scandal and the Boston "Big Dig" collapse. Sure, he can "explain" his way out of those scandals, but that won't make him more popular nationally. Merely being associated with those scandals will cost him more votes than Foley lost for us.

So Mitt Romney fails on U.S. political strategic grounds, fails on gun/abortion ideological grounds, and he further fails on the grounds that he has immense political baggage.

Romney is the sort of pre-destined loser-style name that hyper-liberal newspaper editors toss out when they want to mention people they *wish* would run against them on a national ticket. He'd lose 50 of 50 states.

Not to mention 4 or 8 more years of Bush 41 and Clinton palling around. Maybe 43 would be in the act by then. I will vote for a conservative who will say that Clinton was a lying scumbag who did great harm to this country. Please, can we find such a man?

I'm not that worried about Chelsea Clinton. But Her Heinousness scares me. And running Jeb against her is a very bad idea. The GOP needs new blood for '08.

We beat the British. We don't have to hand our Presidency down to heirs. Hell, we got 300 million citizens. I don't know how many vote but it's enough to send a resounding NO
to another Bush.

I like Rudy, Jeb, or even McCain (on a stretch) for the 2nd seat. (and it would be nice to throw Tancredo into a cabinet slot somewhere... some immigration level headedness would be nice - his 'nuke mecca' comment not withstanding ;)

Romney definitely for top slot.

from a competency standpoint, you cannot fault Jeb, Mit, or Rudy for the jobs they have all done with their states/cities.

Why even a maybe? He's done nothing but happen to be born a Bush. Other than this post, I won't give George Jr. a thought as presidential contender.

There's too much dynasty and nepotism going on in Washington. We need to move away from this idea that certain families are owed public office.
