The ordinance has troubled many people in Texas, where many Latino families can trace their roots to the era before statehood.TFB. It's not the ones that can trace their roots back 200 yrs that we're worried about.

These families are obviously not at risk. This is targeted towards 'illegals', not citizens.

The ordinance has troubled many people in Texas, where many Latino families can trace their roots to the era before statehood. It shouldn't. This is against *illegals*. Some people just don't get it.

As I understand it after the Mexican American war, Mexicans left in newly American territories were given the choice of American Citizenship or remaining a Mexican citizen. I can't help your ancestors choice but they were given a choice.
And any way, I have Irish roots that would be like me going to Ireland and demanding automatic citizenship and benefits based on just that. The gaul of some people is palpable!

I have no problem with this. Why are those who ARE real citizens worrying? They are citizens. IT IS THE DAMNED ILLEGALS THAT THEY ARE GOING AFTER!!!

Want to bet that the "protestors outside" - the ones hoisting U.S. flags - are the same hypocrites hoisting Mexican flags next May 5?
To: Man50D
It's hard for me to believe there are still some people (including various FReepers) who can't discern between illegal and legal immigration. (or citizens vs non-citizens) These folks are either stupid or just trying to cause trouble.

This is great news! Now if we could just get more cities in Texas to follow this lead.

Seems to me a while before Texas bacame a state we won our independence from Mexico; anyone remeber the Battle of San Jacinto?

The ordinance has troubled many people in Texas I guess this reporter *missed* the polls on many of the local Dallas news shows re: this ordinance.....
Last I saw, 95% were in favor of someone finally enforcing our immigration laws.

TFB. It's not the ones that can trace their roots back 200 yrs that we're worried about.
I think some of the concerns come down to application of these laws. Will the renter with an Anglo surname have to go through the same checks to prove citizenship/legal alien staus as the the renter with an Hispanic surname?

I echo the sentiments of those who say: "So what? You're not the problem."
But, I want to point out the lie in that statement: US censuses show that the vast majority (over 90%) of mexican-americans came to this country AFTER 1900! So, saying "many" is false prima facie. So is the popular slogan "I didn't cross the border, the border crossed me!"

Why is the most important word involoved in the whole matter left out of the headline? ILLEGAL!

(snip) In a parking lot outside, hundreds of protesters against the rules hoisted U.S. flags and sang the Pledge of Allegiance in English before the votes were taken.
I saw a news story about this on TV this morning. There were Hispanic counter-protesters outside who were arguing with the pro illegal immigrant crowd. Nice tactic, it takes the racial element out of the story, for the most part.
