As I understand it after the Mexican American war, Mexicans left in newly American territories were given the choice of American Citizenship or remaining a Mexican citizen. I can't help your ancestors choice but they were given a choice.
And any way, I have Irish roots that would be like me going to Ireland and demanding automatic citizenship and benefits based on just that. The gaul of some people is palpable!
