I'm almost certain, Mel Martinez is temporary and nearly as certain that Michael Steele is going to get a cabinet postion so he will GOOD good for a VP choice. There is an excellent post which will be available shortly. The Ambassador to the European Union was a recess appointment in January - Steele can take over the role. He can gain foreign policy experience which will assist a VP bid.

BTW....I still think we need someone FULL TIME, and energetic and dynamic. Mel Martinez is none of those..and it has nothing to do with his race..or how he feels about immigrationExactly!

Guys, you are making it sound like Martinez is some wife beatin Zoot zuited gang banger from East LA because he has a Spanish surname. The word "Hispanic" is very misleading - we are not all boogey men you know and Martinez is a Cuban American - very different from some dude swimming the Rio Grande. Way different. That being said - I don't think he is the right guy though. They should of got fiesty ileana ros leithen from Fla to do the job.

As posted earlier - look at his actual votes - which include his vote / support for Bush's amnesty for illegal's bill

The article said he would remain in office, and be the spokesperson for the RNC, plus take a role as fundraiser. An assistant will also take some responsibilities.
I don't think he has shown any abilities as a spokesperson. He's been in the background, not know for speaking up and he certainly is not a spokesperson for conservative values.
"Under the arrangement, Martinez will remain in office and serve as the party's lead spokesman as well as take a major role in fundraising and political outreach, while RNC General Counsel Robert (Mike) Duncan will oversee the committee's day-to-day responsibilities. "
I hope it is all right to post an excerpt.

What do you like about him?
He has nothing going for him that I can see.

That's my problem as well! I want someone out and front who is not afraid to dish out. Kumbaya is getting on my nerves!

Didn't we all think Howard Dean was going to be a disaster as DNC chairman? How'd that turn out? Dean was nothing but a puppet for the DNC to keep the base in line
Rahm Emanuel was the one that was calling the shots and making the planning

Don't worry; a bunch of posters would be here freaking out if Steele were chosen, complaining about much the same things.
To: MadIvan
A distinct possibility, huh? Interesting.

According to the ACU ratings, Mel Martinez scored a perfect 100% in 2005.

The media will only talk about Martinez' campaign funding oversight, his role in the Terry Schiavo debacle, and ties to Jack Abramoff.
Is there anyone better?
To: monkeywrench
It's more than that, even. He's too far left.Is he? His ACU rating in 2005 was a perfect 100%.

More like a water pistol than a big gun. Something a child would play with, doesn't look like they mean business.

I am strongly of the opinion that to protect Steele's career, he needs to be kept out of the bloody battles to come over the next 2 years. He and Santorum in particular need to be put into active service in a different venue for a while.

I'm not sure where you're getting that people here have a problem with his being a "Hispanic". In fact, I'm pretty sure nobody here cares what ethnicity or culture he's from. They're just worried he's not the right guy for the job based on his voting record and charisma-challenged personality.
