Best Buy Bans Use of Merry Christmas In Advertising
Forbes.com ^ | 11/11/06 | By ANNE D'INNOCENZIO

Best Buy has announced they will be using "Happy Holidays" this coming Christmas shopping season, and they will not be using "Merry Christmas."

Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc., says their advertising will not be using the term "Merry Christmas." "We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them," Bryant said. I vote for a Hanukkah sale day separate from Christmas in your name.

Big businesses are so shallow and try to cut costs at their own peril.

Their advertising says that we had better get our orders in for the military if we want the "gifts" to get there by December 24th.

Tha gall of these sickos.

Depends on how wide the screen is.

We have purchased two over the internet, no clue what company (my husband does that kind of ordering) and both are fine, Sharps I believe, came on time, price was lower than in any store around. one is 24" and the second one (from a different supplier, still no problems) is 34 or somewhere around there.

Love having more room in the bedroom, since the tv is now mounted on the wall.

Did get the larger rear projection from BB. Won't be doing that any more.

Hopefully Best Buy will have enough Holiday gift shoppers to make up for the loss of some of their Christmas gift shoppers.

How friggin' pc do these people think they have to be?

My brief email to Ms. Bryant.

"We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them" reads the quote attributed to you in a recent Fores article on several retailers who have moved back towards "Christmas" advertising rather than the politically-correct "Holiday" advertising. Funny, one can mention Christmas without disparaging any other holiday, be it Hannukah, Ramadan, or Kwanzaa. Its not as if saying Merry Christmas is the same as saying "Hannukah sucks" or "Ramadan who?" The truth of the matter is that Christmas, as a season of Christian giving in celebration of God's gift of Jesus for our redemption, is the reason that this is the period that will make or break your fiscal year - not Hannakuh, not Ramadan, not Kwanzaa. One can recognize the holiday that is at the core of this seasons retail importance without disaparaging other traditions. What's next, you won't want to celebrate the 4th of July, just in case you might offend French-Americans so close to Bastille Day?

Love your email. Here's mine:

Dear Dawn,

How's your foot sweetie? You know, the one you shot when Best Buy decided to kill Christmas.

IMHO, Best Buy is making a serious mistake. Retailing is a dog eat dog business. Why not give yourself every advantage?

Your "Big Brother" Wally has seen the light this year. Too bad you didn't.

Hope your foot gets better soon!

Merry Christmas!

It would be interesting to know what percentage of their business "during that time period" is from shoppers for the "several holidays" other than Christmas.

I too will do my shopping at retailers that have "Christmas" merchandise ;-)

If I were you I would keep buying from Best Buy. I have had the opposite experience from Best Buy on more than one occasion. I no longer want any of their products.

Dear Dawn-Just a quick note to let you know that my family prefers to shop at stores that recognize Christmas and any other popular holiday. Lumping them all together is disrespectful.

They are a little behind in their Christmas dissing. The ones who have been dissing the last 2 years are into Christmas again. Funny, huh?

Hannukah is not a major holiday in Judaism; I see no reason for a store to have a sale.

You make an excellent point. Particularly as it applies to retailers.

"The holiday on Dec 25 is CHRISTMAS
We are giving CHRISTMAS gifts
I have the day off from work because of CHRISTMAS
I won't be shopping for my CHRISTMAS gifts at Best Buy"

Pretty much exactly what I said in my e-mail. However, I thanked them.....for simplifying my Christmas shopping. Since they are not selling Christmas gifts, I cannot go spend my Christmas money in their store. One less stop to worry about.
