Bush eyes Democrats for help on amnesty
The Washington Times ^ | November 9, 2006 | Stephen Dinan

President Bush yesterday said he will team up with Democrats to pass an immigration bill with a guest-worker program that his own party blocked this year, and his Republican opponents predicted a bloody intraparty fight but said they cannot stop such a bill from passing.

"We will fight it, we will lose. It will go to the Senate, it will pass. The president will sign it. And it will happen quickly because that's one thing they know they can pass," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, who had led the opposition to a guest-worker plan. "I am absolutely horrified by this prospect, but I have to face reality."

Mr. Bush supported a bipartisan majority in the Senate this year that passed a broad immigration bill including a new worker program and citizenship rights for millions of illegal aliens. But House Republicans blocked those efforts, calling them an amnesty, and instead forced through a bill to erect nearly 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Dems will also slow down the funding for the construction of new fencing,

The republican congress already did that prior to the election! In fact, I think that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back!

They will complain, but there reaches a point where the issue hits home. If this country goes into an economic downturn and unemployment rises, there will be increasing anger at the fact that illegals are taking jobs. If our schools, hospitals, and social systems continue to be overburdened to the point that the tax base can't support it without increasing taxes, then you will see more involvement. ERs are closing down. State Medicaid payments are burgeoning out of control. Property taxes are rising. Schools are overcrowded.

The US is headed for a major train wreck in terms of the entitlement programs. SS, Medicare, and Medicaid are not sustainable in their present form. The status quo is not an option. The big political fight will be how to fix them. The Dems want to nationalize health service, i.e., provide a Medicare program for all ages. The Dems are against personal accounts in SS. The struggle will be whether we expand these government programs, including increasing taxes, or start privatizing them. The Dems hold on power is wedded to keeping people dependent upon government. If they win, our economy will be devastated.

They did not. What is the source for your assertion? They did sign a 700 mile fence bill authorization, which had some funding associated with it. This bill provided cover for the Dems and should not have been passed. Even Hillary voted for it.

We lost big in the middle states. What makes you think a conservative can carry the middle states?

How many of those losses were to pro-amnesty reps?

If we can't win TX and CA and can't win in the middle we are done, right?

As American conservatives we have to take a stand for our country. Bush won't.

I hesitate to suggest this, but since GW doesn't appear to care about rebuilding his own party, it may be time for Republicans in Congress to break with this President.

I think you're right. GW ain't running for anything. He's now a lame duck beyond measure.

The question, how important is his illegal alien plan to him?

I've long been under the impression that it is very important to him.

Bush has always been pro immigration. Go back and read some of his speechs from both 2000 and 2004. You will never get everything you want in a candidate. I voted for Bush knowing his views on immigration was differed from mine.

Last-minute bill changes funding for border fence

WASHINGTON - No sooner did Congress authorize construction of a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border last week than lawmakers rushed to approve separate legislation that ensures it will never be built, at least not as advertised, according to Republican lawmakers and immigration experts.

GOP leaders have singled out the fence as one of the primary accomplishments of the recently completed session. Many lawmakers plan to highlight their $1.2 billion down payment on its construction as they campaign in the weeks before the midterm elections.

But shortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects -- not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and "tactical infrastructure" to support the Homeland Security Department's preferred option of a "virtual fence."

The loopholes leave the Bush administration with authority to decide where, when and how long a fence will be built, except for small stretches east of San Diego and in western Arizona. Homeland Security officials have proposed a fence half as long, lawmakers said.

This case reflects political calculations by GOP strategists that voters do not mind the details, and that key players -- including the administration, local leaders and the Mexican government - oppose a fence-only approach, analysts said.

We can win in Texas. Kay Baily won easily. The Dems gerrymandered Delay's seat. We will have to recruit some moderate conservative candidates for the middle states. I believe immigration reform will be a done deal by 2008.

They did win. Unfortunately, we will have to live with the consequences of our losses.

What's her position on "comprehensive immigration reform"? That will tell you if we can win without pandering to hispanics in TX and CA and a host of other states at this point.

The Dems circled the wagons and protected Clinton. They used the impeachment in the next election against the Repubs. This is more akin to the Repubs helping drive Nixon from office. Believe me we lost big in 1976 and the country paid a high price for it. The present war can be traced back to the Carter administration. Republicans could take a lesson in loyalty from the Dems. Look at 1994 Clinton single handledly lost the House and the Senate big. However, the Dems stuck by Clinton. We lost and election. It is not the end of the world. If we pull together, we may win in 2008. However, we will not win if we eat our own...as Repubs are wont to do.

There is no party at the moment which shares your views on immigration period. By electing Dems this cycle, we have made amnesty a done deal. You can not win elections by being a one issue voter.

Also, maybe the truth is we can't win without Hispanics. Repubs swallowed a bitter in California when Pete Wilson angered Hispanic voters. We have lost California in every presidential election since.
