No, I was talking about Gates. God, Country (US), Family (Texas A&M family). That means that Gates has to leave us to serve his country.

Rush was always part of the cabal that new better than the President. Willingly criticized him at every turn and stuck to the mantra that he was a real conservative.

I don't agree with it either. But I would have liked to know what was really said during that conservation with Pelosi. I wonder, if she tried to coerce him with a threat since they have the house and probably the senate.

Has anyone considered that Rummy WANTED to resign....maybe a long time ago?

That he was fed up with fighting a politically-correct war with both brains tied behind his back?

That he sensed that mushy, inner circle political advisers had the President's ear.....advisers who wanted to win the next election rather than to decisively win a war?

Many questions could be raised. I feel Cheney is fed up also, but will stay the course.

IMO the hawks are being eliminated or neutered. Time will tell.

Correction, the actions of the new SofD, the Baker report, and the President's embracing a possible cut-and-run-Baker report will do the telling, not time.

Bush should have nominated Lieberman, that way the GOP gov. could replace him with a pubbie. While we are at it try to get Bill Nelson to take the job of FEMA director. I doubt that would be enough to lure him though.

Wonder what happens to the run away and hid crowds thinking if you change the Iraq to Israel and the Americans to Jews in the sentence above. Once they sell out one country for "realism" lots of others ones get disposable. Especial with Saudi Inc running the US National Mid East policy. People should be real careful about suggesting bailing on anyone

I think you're already seeing the policy put in place regarding Israel. This is why through the election we've made a palestinian state a cornerstone of American foreign policy, decried the occupation, commended Hamas for being in the government rather than on the streets, doubled aid to the mid $400 million range, are arming Fatah, and pressuring Israel to allow PLO terrorists, the Bader Brigade who fought against us in the first Gulf war, to return to Gaza from Jordan. We're planning on rearming them too.

Iraq comes next. Word is an anouncement will be made withing the week. Speculation is that we'll begin a phased withdrawl, as well as entering into dialogue with Syria and Iran about Iraqs future. I only hope we don't sell out the Kurds. If this is what comes to pass, it's administration policy, developed by

co-chairs James Baker and Lee Hamilton, and will be composed of five Republicans and five Democrats, including:

As I noted earlier, this should have been anounced prior to the election. Republican voters have a right to know, and it might have drawn some votes from the Dems. And yes, the Saudi's will be pleased.

Two things bother me about this nomination:

1. He's a career CIA bureaucrat

2. (quoted from Wiki): "In 1996, his memoirs were published under the title From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War."

I have a deep suspicion of careerists in general: always looking for the massage, never ruffling feathers, the first principle is CYA at CIA. Of course, he could be an exception, but the civilian head of an agency with hundreds of billions of dollars to spend wisely or blow and the lives of Americans hanging in the balance is something I wouldn't gamble on. Right or Wrong, you know Rumsfeld didn't give a crap about all the bureaucratic CYA BS.

Regarding the book, let me say, I have not read it. It may have a good reason for the title which attributes victory in the cold war to 5 presidents. It sounds to me like a liberal way of diminishing Reagan's overwhelmingly important role in winning the cold war, while the other presidents, starting with Truman were placeholders at best.
I'm going to look for blurbs from the book and reviews and report back if there's anything worth mentioning.

In fact using that as a model, the US should immediately shift to caring about the only group in Iraq that cares about American friendship and support- the Kurds.

Here's hoping the Kurds are strong enough to look out for themselves.

Exactly. GW bet all his chips on the win. With that in mind, this makes sense. I would be upset if he had done otherwise.

It would be an interesting experiment to initiate right this moment.

Try to think like a Saudi and draw up what the Saudis would like to see happen vis a vis overall US Mideast policy in the next two years.

Compare to actual Bush policy in the next two years.

And then wonder in 2008 why (F the) Jews, don't vote Republican.

Not at all. It cleared the decks of the imminent hearings Rumsfeld would have had to suffer through. Not good for him, not good for Bush, not good for the military...This takes the anti-Rumsfeld thing away from the Dims. They'll have some hearings but they can't go into the kind of excruciating stuff they were planning....Shrewd move. Bush cut his losses here. And Cheney's influence is unchanged. Those two are very very close....Far more likely we'll see Condi shoved out the door. Personally, that would be my preference.

I think we need to see if GWB is going to adopt the policy recomendations of the Baker bipartisan "policy group", said to be a withdrawl with negotiations with Iraq and Iran to draw them in for stability purposes. If that's the policy, and Gates serves on the group with luminaries such as Sandra O'Connor, Vernon Jordan and Leon Panetta, not to mention Baker, the Dems might be pleased with Gates. Yes, they'll bash Rummy and Bush in the hearings, while taking credit for the change in policy, which they'll attribute to their "suggestions" during the campaign. Rice, she won't go, in fact he star will likely rise. We'll have a better idea in a week or so, once the proposals are made public.

Wish them luck.

I imagine that Kurds don't vote Republican.

And I have a sneaking suspicion the Saudis don't wish them well.

So James, F the Kurds, Baker may not care for their interests.
